i'm glad that guy owns the team and not me.  he gets in a crappy mood and doesn't fire everyone all willy nilly.     i would. i'd fire them,  buy their houses and then burn them to the ground and put up memorials to mediocrity in their names.   and then tuesday realize we need a coach for the week

Im not sure we had a coach last game so whats the difference?

My biggest takeaway? Tepper’s continued use of the word “mediocrity,” and how frustrated it makes him. He said he understood why Panthers fans would be frustrated, too, especially if they’ve watched seasons like this one unfold for so many years.

So he basically ignored Rivera’s 2011-18 track record track record of inconsistency and mediocrity and brought him back for 2019 anyway.

Makes sense.

(By which I mean it makes NO sense... AT ALL.)

That's my take on the whole situation.  I'm not saying that I was surprised that we brought Ron back, but don't use those words if you aren't really going to back them up.

If winning and not having a track record of inconsistency and mediocrity is your goal, Ron Rivera and Marty Hurney are not your guys.  Their (LONG) record speaks for itself.

One of the things you don't do in becoming a billionaire hedge fund manager is make decisions about things from the outside looking in, or just go by past track record. You investigate for yourself, and where possible, take your time making significant decisions. You and I have a pretty strong sense of Rivera's track record not just from his wins and losses but by watching how and why those things happened along the way. Tepper didn't already have the benefit of that when he bought the team. He has been in evaluation mode ever since.  His words and the mere fact he took the initiative to speak to reporters strongly implies he wants to let the fans know he's not asleep at the wheel and changes are coming.

That's my reaction anyway.

Love that he’s not going to accept mediocrity

Love that the team will not be playing at Wofford

Hate that he felt the need to bring up a new stadium when he can’t fill the current one and his team is falling apart

Hate that there seems to be a “Cam was hurt”built in excuse for Ron to use.

It’s really hard to tell after reading everything where Dave stands on the current staff. I guess he’s going to let the season play out and go from there.

I'm the last person who would argue that.

That's exactly how Tepper made his money.

He is a genius at evaluating complex business situations at arms length ("from the outside looking in") and subsequently making very large bets/investments when he decided the market was mispricing the situation.

That said, the Panthers are a fairly simple business situation compared to many of the investments he has made in the past.....he just needs some time to clean up the mess he inherited.

If he was going to fire Ron or Marty in my opinion he would have done so prior to this season.  He evaluated them last year and made the decision to move forward with them....I will be surprised if he reverses course after this season.

Tepper factored in how much Ron & Marty were hindered by The Big Cat for their entire careers with the Panthers and concluded they could thrive under his leadership.  Seems to be the only plausible explanation.

I believe you sir are correct.  I’d be stunned if he fires them.

Here's a question that actually arose from reading David Newton's article about the meeting, oddly enough.

Does it signify anything that Tepper held this meeting solo rather than alongside Rivera and Hurney?

That was my impression. Not sure it's all that supportable, but I was thinking they were not present for this. Anyone have any info one way or the other on that?

They were not.

The only mention of them related to this meeting is that Tepper wouldn't discuss their futures.

(something which, in itself, could be taken as a tad oominous)

And I would add not having back to back winning seasons with players e.g. Cam Newton, Luke Keuchly, Greg Olsen, etc. But yes, Tepper needs to clean out the last vestiges of Richardson's regime.

Yup, even the water boy can kick rocks.
