You get the sense it is more due to the personnel/execution, or coaching?

It’s not a good fit. You can’t coach up something that doesn’t fit. So I guess, personnel would be the issue. But they already have a good personnel...for a 43 base.

If this season was all about winning right now, this was a bad idea.

I honestly wonder if Tepper met with Ron in January and said: “Look, I’m bringing you back, but my analytics people tell me that a 34 defense is the best way to go. So you’re going to run a 34 if you come back. You good with that?”

I’m only halfway kidding.

While much of this is to do with coaching.

Remember the excitement coming into this season.  A lot of it had to do with the beefy talent up front while speed on the edge.

You lose 2 of the 3 startng interior DL to IR, then the 3rd starting DL has been playing hurt.  We're running with Vernon Butler as the 2nd best starting DL when we were even wondering if he'd make the team in camp.

Thats really going to impact the interior DL.

Didn't we spend a good portion of this offseason trying to create a roster that did fit, though?

Granted, you were never going to make Luke fit this scheme regardless of what you did.

They didn't bring in any analytics guys until June. Though maybe he just used one of his fund analysts....lol

The issue....is this is what it's always been with Ron and Marty.

This year they are throwing poo against the wall hoping for it to stick, as they know they are at the end of their rope.

Tepper giving Marty and Ron another year was no different than Jerry trotting Foxy out there during his last season.  You knew that they were going to mess it up, it's just what they do...and now they have, and now the mess gets larger to clean up.

We are a dumb football team, and have been for a very long time.

I've always thought it was Rivera's idea, but who knows.

My scenario was that Tepper pressed Rivera on what he was going to do to fix the defensive problems, and Rivera just blurted out a desperate idea. Then he was forced to actually implement it and here we are.

Said it then, and I'll say it now....switching to the 3/4 is going to accomplish 1 thing very well....putting our best defensive player at a disadvantage.

I didn't think that Ron was really dumb, more stubborn, set in his ways, etc....but I'm pretty sure I was wrong.  I don't think that Ron (nor Marty) can see the long game in the NFL.

I would never refer to Rivera as dumb, but I have frequently referred to him as "not smart enough".

I've used the metaphor of a high school kid who's good at chess playing against a grandmaster. The kid might take a piece or two, But ultimately he's going to get outsmarted and lose.

Back in the old days when half the league's preferred strategy was just "line up and slam into each other and see who survives", a guy like Rivera could be successful.

Those days are gone.

Yeah but RR and Hurney have already exhausted the injury excuse prior to now. It's a legitimate problem, obviously but the wheels had started to come off this prior to the acceleration of injuries.

We could not run block with Williams, Paradis and Turner across the front. CMC was getting killed.

Who, back in August, would have thought that the loss of GVR would be this big of a deal?

No one, but we all, i think, expected more from Paradis, Turner has vastly underperformed, and we were thinking we had some depth possibly in williams or Larsen to kick to G.....We.....I....was wrong.
