Then why not just say "Marty is staying as the GM"?

If it's that simple, why wouldn't you just make a clear statement?

Marty’s role is going to change.  He’s gonna focus on what he’s good at... evaluating College talent.  He won’t be the guy doing contracts.

Idk, from my perspective it sounded pretty clear what he was saying.  But, I wasn't hoping for Hurney to be canned either.

I think the idea of keeping him as the GM and bringing in an assistant is perfect.

Also, Gantt even just tweeted out that it sounded like Tepper is looking for a Brandon Beane.  So, it's not just my interpretation.

Tepper just said it in his interview with Voth explaining the moves today.

Tepper said, "Marty Hurney is one of the best recognizers of college talent in the nation.  Period.  I don't want to lose that."

I love this.  I stated something similar in all-pro.  Hurney is far from perfect, but his ability to hit big on the picks that matter is uncanny, so that is an asset.  But he needs balance.  His decisions in FA have been pretty bad, so bringing in someone to handle that side is perfect.  I know this is a bummer for many, but I love it.

So he does well in the first round and is barely average from the 2nd on. He has the Panthers with two developmental qb’s. chose Gano over Butker, horrible roster make-up and the list could go on. Is this really someone you want making decisions for your team?

Lol Scot clinging to hope over here. Guys, it’s a temporary thing anyway because he will just get canned after next season if not after Week 17.

Nah. Just interpreting what I hear.

Had Tepper plainly stated "Marty Hurney is staying as the GM" I could buy it. He didn't, and in fact discussed other hypotheticals.

I would agree though that even if he does stay GM for now, that's not guaranteed to be permanent (or even long term).

Yeah I love all the Super Bowls we have won from Hurney building us a complete roster over the years.

We're a small market team that's not too removed from being an expansion team

Marty Hurney has built a team that went to the Super Bowl, TWICE.  That 2015 team that had 9 Pro Bowlers that Hurney either drafted or traded for, was a lot better than Denver, and would have easily won that game with better coaching (or even better refs).

We were very close in 2003 as well;  pretty impressive for an expansion team.

Tepper, being the analytical genius he is, recognizes that.  He's not dumb enough to fall for the argument that Gettleman built the 2015 team given all of our star players were Hurney guys.

Yeah, real great thinking there.  Let's fire the guy who is, to quote Tepper, one of the best recognizers of college talent in the country, period, because he chose to go with an experienced kicker (forget the fact Rivera was the one who made this decision).

It's clear why Tepper is the hedge fund billionaire and not posting on the huddle.

As I said, he's not perfect, but his ability to hit on the picks that matter most is invaluable.  You're also discounting some of Rivera's influence on those decisions.  Bringing someone in to help, especially on the pro personnel side is ideal.  Also, these last two drafts post-JR-meddling era, outside of Gaulden and Grier, have been pretty amazing.

Again, that's pretty much what I heard.

A role like "Director of College Scouting" or "Vice President of College Scouting" so it sound like a promotion sounds reasonable.

I'd add if he brings in a guy like Nick Caserio or Kevin Colbert, neither of those guys are gonna be willing to be below Marty n the org chart.

Last thing this team needs on top of everything else is an internal power struggle.
