•  Everyone I’ve talked to believes that Carolina, with new owner David Tepper captaining a small search committee, will go through a full process in the search for its next head coach. Former Packers coach Mike McCarthy has already interviewed, and the search is expected to include a college coach or two (those interviews are usually done covertly). 

Tepper could tap into the Patriots’ pipeline, so keep an eye out for offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels; McDaniels could perhaps pursue New England pro director Dave Ziegler to fill the assistant GM role/become assumed successor to GM Marty Hurney. But McDaniels will have to win the job, and I know that Tepper would be respectful to the Krafts by not hiring away too many of their people. One thing that could appeal about the Carolina job to McDaniels? I’m told the coach will have considerable say over the football operation, in areas like strength-and-conditioning, training and video. The average fan doesn’t pay much attention to that, but coaches do care about it.

• And as for Tepper being respectful to the Krafts, it’s certainly possible the Patriots work to hang on to Ziegler. Both director of player personnel Nick Caserio and director of college scouting Monti Ossenfort are on contracts expiring in May. That makes Ziegler the only guy on that level in scouting signed into next season. And if there is a scouting exodus, similar to last offseason coaching exodus? Well, Bill Belichick confidant Scott Pioli, a key cog in building the original iteration of the dynasty, is available.

• Speaking of Ossenfort, among those on my risers list in this year’s future GMs column, he and Saints pro director Terry Fontenot received mention as guys who are pretty upwardly mobile.

Worth noting that the control aspects Breer is talking about here are the reason why McDaniels didn't end up taking the Colts job. He wanted control in those areas but Colts GM Chris Ballard didn't want to give them up.

Could Tepper be saying these things as a way of appealing to McDaniels? Don't know. It's possible, but Breer also points out that these things could be important to any potential candidate.

Also worth remembering that in an interview after he was fired, Ron Rivera complained about not having enough control.

It all depends on the coach on which way this could go. Ron with more control sounds like an epic disaster. For this to work the coach has to have skills and be honest with themselves because no one is perfect accross the board so they need to find people to work with that masks their weaknesses. An enabler will go down in flames and bring the team with them.

Well, I guess McD didn't learn anything from his crash and burn in Denver. It was widely reported that giving McD too much control too soon was a big part of why things went south so quickly with the Broncos. He blew that roster up and then ultimately got fired for his very on videotaping scandal.

Breer seems fixated on McDaniels. I wouldn't mind it but I've seen a lot of folks opposed to it. Regardless, 80% of the fanbase will hate whoever gets hired.

I just hope the coach that does get the opportunity has the chance to get the right pieces in place to put him in the best position to succeed.

      I think everyone says Mike Evans because of size, but really they have different strengths and play styles.  Tmac is better on intermediate routes and not nearly as good at contested catches.

      At this point, it is criminal to go into the 2026 training camp/OTA's with XL penciled in as a #2 WR. The team must upgrade, either through free agency or the draft. If he cannot give 100% effort on significantly less snaps as a #4-6 WR(players like Tremayne have done that consistently) then I don't think you have a player worth rostering beyond the trade deadline. Offensively, we eventually have to upgrade to an NFL starting caliber C. It's been almost the length of time from Gross to Ikey since Kalil retired and we have below average to terrible C play. Love Mays as a BC-esque utility backup but he will never be an above average long term starting C.  The TE room is one of the worst in the NFL but it's a low usage position in this offense, so the investments are likely to be small, if any. I would never expect to see an elite TE in a Dave Canales offense. 100% agree on OL depth. We actually aren't bad there but BC will be gone, Mays is a UFA, Corbett is a UFA and Zavala has been both injured and bad. We have to bolster that depth again or resign guys like Mays and Corbett to keep that depth somewhat stable.

      Bingo. The dude is a baller no doubt and I'd love to have him in a vacuum but like you said he's gonna fetch a haul so the only teams it really makes sense for are teams with an overall good roster who they feel an edge rusher like Crosby would out them over the top in terms of competing for SBs. I'd be looking st teams like the Pats, Bucs, Ravens, Seahawks, etc. It wouldn't be shocking to see him moved. He may be more valuable to a rebuilding team in the form of the draft assets he'd fetch than he is on the field. He should still have several more good years in the tank at 28 but by the time the Raiders can reasonably expect to rebuild he's gonna be on the decline.
