Tepper/Hurney:  "So, you think you can lose a Super Bowl once every decade?"

Coaching candidate: "Uh, um, yeah I guess?"

Tepper/Hurney: "You're hired"

Pretty much.

Apparently some members of our fanbase have some extremely low standards.

Ron Rivera wore out his welcome here, and deserved to be fired, but he was a 2 time coach of the year

To cite him as a blunder in hiring a coach is a bit of a stretch.

If you want to just say he rode the coat tails of a talented roster, well then you have to give Hurney his due for constructing that roster.  Can't have it both ways with that.

Hurney didn’t construct any of the winning rosters in the past decade. He acquired pieces but he didn’t construct any winning roster, remember a football team is 53 players not 5.

Look at the stats of Rivera/Gettleman to the stats of Rivera/Hurney.  It’s like night and day.

Now say it with me. Hurney hasn’t constructed a winning roster since 2008. Since then he had a combined win/loss percentage of .341.

Here’s the thing: Hurney is McCarthy. Both with some highlights of success. Both fired for valid underperformance measures. Both being touted as good stories because they’ve “learned from their mistakes and EVOLVED.”

Do people not realize how bad McCarthy was when Aaron Rodgers was hurt? Do people not realize how bad McCarthy was, at times, when Aaron Rodgers was healthy?

Go back and watch the end of the 2014 NFC title game.

The richest owner in the league should be able to do better than Marty Hurney and Mike McCarthy. And again, if Cam is not here next year, what the hell makes this job so damn attractive?

Sorry, just being real here.

So let me get this right, Ron Rivera rode the coat tails of Trai Turner, Corey Brown, and Kurt Coleman to 2 coach of the year achievements (and not Cam Newton, Greg Olsen, Luke Kuechly, Thomas Davis, Josh Norman, Greg Hardy, Jonathan Stewart, etc).

Great logic.

Ron Rivera must have been the best coach of all time to ride the coat tails of Trai Turner and Kurt Coleman to the Super Bowl.

Hurney's been in this thing since 2002.  At this point, you can basically consider his absence here from 2013-2017 an extended vacation.  He was involved in football operations prior to his formal acquisition of the GM title, too.  To paraphrase an offensive guru and coach famous for his adjustments and adaptability, he is what he is.  Hurney is not going to wake up one day and know how to build a roster that consistently wins and contends for championships year after year.  He's the Jeff Fisher of GMs.

7 people isn’t enough to even take the field. 46 more people are needed. How are you not understanding that? Depth matters.

Jeff Fisher is a pretty good analogy.

So Ron Rivera was 2 time coach of the year because of depth pieces G-Man acquired?

Man, Rivera must have been twice the coach any of us ever realized

I never realized how integral Fozzy Whitaker, Cameron Artis Payne, Corey Brown, Cortland Finnegan, and Brentson Bersin were, until now.  I've had had a revelation about it all now.

    • It is hard to win in the NFL. I’m never going to put an * next to a Dub.
    • We had a very favorable matchup our o-line manhandles theirs. Even Etienne looked like he would have had a great game on his limited rushing opportunities.
    • I think that's part of the problem, he's spreading the ball around too much, many of them are the first read play calls, and on top of that, a large portion of them are purposefully called screens or other short passes. I just looked, the Cardinals are the only other team in the league right now without at least 3 players with 100+ yards receiving so far this year, with the majority of teams having 4 or more.  And even then, their #2 right now is McBride with over 200 yards. Our 2nd leading receiver this year has 108 yards (albeit with 4 more players with 82 or more). On the surface, that might not be as alarming as you might think, but when you add into it that Bryce is currently 6th in the league in pass attempts, and it's even more alarming that he hasn't gotten a 3rd player to 100 yards so far and his second highest is only 108. XL has 39 yards on 18 targets.  Renfrow has 82 yards on 24 targets.  Tremble has 87 on 16 targets.  Sanders has 92 on 14 targets. None of those are good enough, so why aren't we calling more plays with T-Mac as the first read and forcing the ball to him (and again, that's not me wanting my guy to get more targets, that's me wanting more targets for the only productive pass catcher so far this year, I'd feel the same no matter what that player's name was). All of this is why I have issues with Canales' play calling.  How do you have a player who had 73 yards in the first half and then you only give him 1 target in the 2nd half despite playing from behind the majority of that time? You can be happy about the win, happy about Dowdle getting 200 yards, but in a game where your QB threw it 30 times, I can't accept the above sentence in the same breath, that's just terrible play calling, which is on top of the already predictable play calling in general, which is also on top of boring play designs as well. Add it all up, and THAT is why I'm unhappy even after a win, not because "my guy" didn't have a bigger game.
