Rhule: “I don’t fire coaches. I don’t believe in it. I believe continuity wins. For me, I’ve never really fired a coordinator"

Initial thought/concerns:

We better hope this Jon Snow character is a hell of a defensive coordinator (or whoever is chosen), because we might be stuck with him for half a decade regardless of his job performance.  Believing in 'continuity' over an actual evaluation of a coordinator's merits was a great way to justify keeping Mike Shula on for the entire portion of Cam Newton's career .

I'm familiar with Jon Snow and I can't vouch for his character at all.

Note, Rhule is not saying he didn't fire any coaches because he happened to chose good ones who helped him win

He's saying he fundamentally doesn't believe in the concept of firing coaches.

"I don't believe in it".

Sure he can, and probably will change his mind, but it's demonstrates a lack of flexibility in his cognition, and will probably lead to him carrying on an incompetent coordinator a few years past the point in which it becomes apparent they need to go.

In a sense he’s right. Don’t see too many NFL coaches firing their coordinators and have a revolving door. Most lose them because of promotions. They choose their staff for a reason and realize their career lives or dies with them.

But then I think there has to be a limit. Shula just was not a fit for Cam. Norv wasn’t the greatest but was better.

Sure you will.  All hype and promise.... but you will just go north in the end like some punk and we will be stuck with shitty ass Bran giving us that death stare.

    • I think we pick it up and then someone else ends up emerging as the QB next year and we end up cutting him in year 5 and eating it.  That would be the most on brand thing to happen.
    • Evero has his faults, but even in that loss, the team only gave up 20 points. Your post gets to the heart of the matter. We are not a talented team on defense at this time. Some of our younger guys may develop w/more playing time, but for now we have no impact players at LB or EDGE. We could really use a ball-hawking S on the back end as well. We have exactly two players that have to be accounted for on every play, D. Brown, and J.Horn. Mike Jackson has been solid. The other starters would probably be backups on most the upper echelon NFL teams. We really can't expect this team to a Top 10 defense with such a lack of talent. All things considered I've been somewhat impressed with how much better they have played this year.   https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/opponent-points-per-game   https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/opponent-average-team-passer-rating We are in the top 15 in terms of points allowed per game (22.6) and top 12 in defensive passer rating (88.9). And, we are doing this without a formidable PASS RUSH. Even our rushing defense has improved. We are #16 in rushing yards allowed per game (116) compared to 179 per game last season. https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/opponent-rushing-yards-per-game I wouldn't cry if Evero moved on after the season, but his defense isn't the biggest worry for our team.
