If we trade Cam, does that mean we are going after "our guy" in the draft?

No offense but I’m trying to figure out how anyone could look at a team that finished 5-11 and was non competitive after the midpoint of the season, then promptly lost the greatest MLB of his generation to retirement and expect that team to be competitive next year.

I think it’s a foregone conclusion we’re in rebuild mode for at least 2 years minimum, maybe longer.

Luke doesn’t signal a rebuild to me. Cam being traded or released does. We were 5-11 even with Luke on the worst run defense in the league. Love Luke but his position isn’t close to as impactful as a qb.

although I’m at the position that Cam going elsewhere is better for Cam to prolong his career. And selfishly I want him to go to Chicago so I can go watch him a couple times a season.

I’m more or less where you are. I love Cam, but I think if he wants to do anything meaningful with the rest of his career he needs to go elsewhere. Anyone who thinks Cam is gonna okay til 40 like Brady and Brees and other league darlings who got protected by the refs with flags when anyone even looked at them funny, and whose teams out decent lines in front of them to protect them is not being realistic. If he’s lucky he makes it to his mid 30’s, which means his last few good years would be wasted here while Rhule rebuilds.

I feel like the guy in the ship that’s sinking telling the one dude with a life jacket. “Save yourself. We’re already doomed. No point in you going down with us.”

I'd agree.

Newton's next contract is conceivably his last contract. Having that be with a team that's starting over with a new coach and a new system and is going to be rebuilding for a while is something less than ideal.

Just because we trade Camdoesnt mean anything.  We could be doing Cam a favor so he isnt playing on a team that A)is rebuilding and B)going to have a terrible offensive line.

We will probably bring in a veteran QB this season and draft lineman this draft. Next offseason we will draft a QB.

QB possibilities (All have their issues..not surprisingly):

Justin Herbert (at the Senior Bowl) (Great arm and good mobility and great size) (I suspect that the Panthers will be particularly eyeing Herbert at the Senior Bowl and we might have to move up in the draft to get him if he performs well at the Senior Bowl, combine etc.)

Jacob Eason (great arm and size) (a but raw, but the skills are there)

Jamie Newman (dual threat QB) (good athlete and arm)

Jordan Love (Project) (Changed systems this year, which hurt him )(at the Senior Bowl)

Steven Montez (Project) (at the Senior Bowl)

People are on drugs.

Cinci is not going to part from Burrows barring some Kevin Costner movie where he feels he’s the only guy in the country with the Browns of all teams that thinks he will bust.

The same thing for Herbert and Tua— only if the other teams think they are busts and we get left holding the bag.

    • Darrell Jackson would be a fantastic pickup for us, I think he could replace 80% of what A’Shawn gave us last year. With more passing rush upside going forward in the future, I’m a big proponent of large framed defensive tackles. Pairing Derrick Brown with another 6’5 35inch arm length DT would be so fun to watch. Let’s continue being huge in the middle, allow our linebackers to flow to the ball uninterrupted.
    • Fully agree that the best thing to do is ignore them, which takes a away their thrill of thinking they got to you.
    • I agree with you on the pick of Thienemen in the first. I think he will still be there and he's a smart, fast and sturdy player. He's who we need back there. In the second, I like Rodriguez over Golday. I agree that off the ball linebackers are desperately needed here, even with our great FA pick up. I think with our third pick, we're going to dip into OT territory instead of the D-line. While I agree that we need another disruptor at the point of attack that is stout enough to just stonewall a center and a guard at the same time, we've got a shaky and expensive O-line at the present that is just about to age out of the game. I think we snag Blake Miller out of Clemson here and give him a year behind Moton to learn and put some weight and strength on. He can also jump right in and play right guard at any time. Also, and this might sound crazy, but anyone who has put up with multiple seasons at Clemson will be able to take the heat and humidity of training camp at the start of the season and early games against the NFCSouth.  Beyond that, your guess is as good as mine. We do need that QB for competition and realistically to study for back-up. Luke Altmyer out of Illinois seems to fit the mold of the point guard type QB that they want from Bryce. That'd make an apples to apples situation that could make coaching and game planning easy. On the other hand North Dakota State's Cole Payton could be an intriguing choice as well as a big dual threat guy. Both could be there for our fourth pick or both could be gone. Will QBs continue to slide this season like last? Who knows?
