Quarterback Coach Options

They all have head coaching experience.

They just all sucked at it.

For a staff without much NFL experience and no NFL head coaching experience, the value is not so much in the person's winning percentage as a head coach but in the day-to-day experience the person brings with them. BTW, Caldwell did not suck. This is especially true if you take out the year Manning was hurt and Indy had horrible back-ups.

McCoy is terrible and has failed damn near everywhere that hasn't involved Peyton Manning.

McCoy has too much of a Shula feel to his style. Antiquated, boring and can't adjust on the fly. Caldwell and Linehan are my two faves here.

I truly feel that whoever is put in this role will likely be the heir apparent to when Brady moves on in a few years.

I wouldn't say Caldwell sucked at it. Think he got a raw deal in Detroit with an incompetent front office. He wasn't the second coming of Chuck Knoll, but I would certainly be cool with him as our QB coach, and as a potential replacement for Brady in a few years when he takes a HC gig somewhere.

Caldwell’s record isn’t as bad as the others and maybe “sucked” is a little strong for him in the pros (not so much for the others) but I also looked at his record as a college head coach at Wake which was 26-63. That sucks.  I’ll grant it’s college, but what record are we judging Matt Rhule on?

If we keep it in the pros though, yes he’s got a better record than the rest, but for perspective I’d ask this: How do you feel about Ron Rivera?

I ask because Caldwell’s win percentage as an NFL head coach is only .001 higher than Rivera’s, and Ron actually won more playoff games (three of seven to Caldwell’s two of six). So even if “sucks” is a strong word, Cracka’s “meh” would still fit pretty well.

Throw in that each team Caldwell coached followed a Grudenesque pattern of starting well and then regressing down to mediocre, or worse in the case of the Colts (losing Manning obviously is a big deal there).

Again though, we’re not looking at him – or any of the others – as a head coach, just a quarterback coach.

Just for fun, the head coaching records (pro only) of the three QB coach candidates and Caldwell, plus our own Ron Rivera

Ben McAdoo:  Regular Season, 13-15 (.464) Postseason, 0-1 (.000) Overall, 13-16 (.448)
Mike McCoy:  Regular Season, 27-37 (.422) Postseason, 1-1 (.500) Overall, 28-38 (.424)
Scott Linehan:  Regular Season, 11-25 (.306) Postseason, 0-0 (.000) Overall, 11-25 (.306)
Jim Caldwell:  Regular Season, 62-50 (.554) Postseason, 2-4 (.333) Overall, 64-54 (.542)
Ron Rivera:  Regular Season, 76-63-1 (.546) Postseason, 3-4 (.429) Overall, 79-67-1 (.541)

Linehan has the worst overall percentage by far with McCoy being the second worst. McAdoo had the shortest leash, i.e.coached the fewest games (the Eli Manning benching debacle assuredly hastened his exit). McCoy actually has just one less win to his credit than McAdoo has total games coached.

As a QB coach? Outside of McCoy, sure. To have any of these guys take over for our OC after he is poached in a year or two? That's the part i want none of. Caldwell maybe but I would still be more excited to hire outside than promote within at that point.

Lot’s talk here about trading up for Burrow to match with Brady.  More talk elsewhere that if Cincinnati doesn’t show significant progress with Burrow they will fire Taylor and hire Brady for the same reason.  So, whomever we hire as QB Coach needs to pick Brady’s brain quickly and be ready to slide over to his seat.

Wonder if there are other options. Seems we would've hired one of these four already if they have all interviewed almost a month ago.

It's been 10 days.

Rhule was hired 20 days ago. There are approximately 30 days in a month.
