He only really "struggled" because the team struggled.  He had a very large amount of 40+ and 50+ yard kicks that no kicker in the NFL was taking.  Our offense was so bad and would regularly sputter out, we'd send in Slye every time we hit the 50 yard line.

Is that the reason he missed a crap ton of PATs and the 20 yarder that he missed against the Saints that put the nail in our coffin for the season?

Not sure I would go that far, but he definitely didn't help

Once again.  I am not saying he is perfect, a probowler, or deserves a 5 year contract.

Only that a 1 year extension with basically no risk doesn't bother me.  Does he need to improve?  Sure.  But he played well enough I could see him improving.

There are definitely people expressing negative viewpoints concerning Slye being signed.  Which is what prompted my initial response.

Who??

Also, you conveniently left out his XP percentage...which is what Gano has been vilified for in the last couple seasons.

I personally do not get why kickers are such an afterthought in the league. About 1 in 7 games in the NFL are decided by three points or less.  That is more than 2 games per year.   We lost a super bowl because of kickers.  Kasay shanked the kickoff and Vineteri hit the game winner.

Every week, a game is won or lost by a last second FG attempt.

I think the K is more important than most FB fans think.  Just my opinion.  Is Slye a guy we can trust to win games? He makes me nervous.  He seems to miss the easy ones and hit the long ones.  I dunno.

Because it's pretty easy to cycle through kickers until you find a pretty decent one. There are only going to be 32 FG kickers in the NFL at one time, which means a lot of decent guys are likely to be sitting on the couch. I agree that it is a very important position but the supply/demand makes it a relatively devalued position.

Not to mention, you will have basically all the college kickers vying for roughly 10 spots every single year. Once a team gets a viable kicker, they don't let them go until they start getting the yips.

We need the money from Gano. Hurney gave him a massive kicker contract and he and Sly are about the same

FWIW, the avg. per year for his contract is roughly about the same as the deal Butker signed(although the structure that Butker has is much better). Gano has the third highest kicker contract currently, however.

We will really not save that much money by cutting him this offseason. If he isn't able to get healthy or it becomes clear that Slye is a better kicker, I would assume the move would be to cut him.

Why are we still shellacking each other over a kicker with all the concerns we have? We're trying to go younger and rebuild the roster here. What part of that involves overpaying aging kickers? If Slye isn't the guy in 2020 it will be someone else we've brought in to compete on the cheap.

Why are you being defensive of Joey Slye, of all people? Are you his cousin or something?

    • I have been looking for a dropped pass list and all that comes up is QBs. And team stats. When I do receivers I get the passing stats for a handful that threw passes this year.    I wanted to be accurate but anyhow I was looking because thought I remembered reading where T Mac had more drops than XL this year.  One of you many smarter than me people here,I would appreciate it if you know how to pull that up, please do. Thank you.    And yeah I know that isn’t all there is to it I just thought it was interesting.  Of course what the hell is a drop lol.
    • I agree with this and I think it's worth mentioning too that Bryce is not consistent on his placement and especially velocity and that in large part is driven by his footwork. We all know XL doesn't have the best hands and I don't know that he can overcome that. Cam always had the heater that just hit your hands and sank into your grip, where Bryce has some that are harder thrown, some soft. Bryce stepping into a pass looks so much different than that hop throw thing he does. I think XL really needs to hit the jugs machine and start learning how to catch all these different touch passes. TMac and Coker don't have these issues. If XL doesn't get some work in he's going to be out of the league in the next couple of years.
    • I think most people like XL from a personal standpoint. I don't think he's stupid either. Although if we are being realistic he is lacking in football IQ at this point in time and it cannot be disputed that he has not taken working on his craft seriously at all times given the body of work on the field. It speaks for itself. I myself have defended him at times given the circumstances of our QB room. But he is now in his third year and 25 years old. We are not in a position as a franchise to go around babying anyone especially first round draft picks. He needs to take his position and his football career seriously or he is going to end up selling used cars somewhere. I hope he realizes this and takes an extended break from social media because that mess certainly isn't going to increase his net worth if he ends up out of the league. And these hanger on types will disappear quick too once that money dries up and it surely will eventually. We'll see how he responds.
