Chargers receiving "Unsolicited Calls" Regarding a Cam Newton Trade

What will the

 Los Angeles Chargers do at quarterback? All signs from league sources indicate the team will draft a signal-caller—either Justin Herbert or Tua Tagovailoa—in the first round, but within the last three days there have been a number of unsolicited calls and texts about a trade for Cam Newton.

This makes sense.

The Chargers need a quarterback, but they also need to sell tickets. Bringing in a household name and marketable option is business savvy and football smart if Newton is healthy. The most likely move is still to draft the next franchise quarterback at No. 6 overall, but there's enough buzz surrounding a Newton trade to mention it here.

If this is true, I'm really starting to lose faith in Tepper as an owner and Rhule as a coach, because the franchise seemingly lacks any coherent sense of direction.  We had statements of support from both Tepper and Rhule regarding Cam.  Then we had Cam said he met with all of the front office and new staff and said he would be back.  Then Hurney comes out with an extremely non-committal statement about Cam where he appeared to be distancing himself from him.  And now this...  wtf is going on?  

If we legit trade away a healthy Cam who wants to be here, I may have reached my limit.

Tepper and Rhule saying good things about Cam = attempting to keep his market value high for a trade.  Them saying anything to the contrary would drive his value down below what they should be able to get for him  

 

Cam saying great things about the panthers and his excitement = keeping his image in Charlotte in good standing when the news inevitably breaks that he’s been traded.  Honestly, Cam would be insane to play our the last year of his contract due to what he’s done for this team without any commitment to his future. He knows this but isn’t going to show his cards in public. 
 

Fact of the matter is he’s as good as gone but neither he nor the team wants to come off with an image issue after this plays out. It’s smart on both sides and why publicly everything looks on the up and up. 
 

with all this said, this is just one panther fans opinion. I hope I’m wrong and he’s a panther next year, but I’d be stunned.

Hard to see us getting a first rounder for a player whose health has ultimately yet to be determined.

The only way you trade Cam is if you get enough in return to trade up to get Joe Burrow. Nothing / no one else would be worth it

If they trade Cam they are basically going to give him away to somebody. Like a 3rd round pick at the best.

If we got the chargers first this year for Cam you have to make that trade. I would hate to see #1 play for another team but that would be too good to give up.

Oh that reliable BR. Cam's persona would rock out LA though and he'd become a superstar unlike he's seen in Carolina. That said, he's our QB next season.

Exactly. The Broncos sent a 2019 fourth-round pick — the 113th-overall selection — to Baltimore as compensation last off-season. We might get a 3rd rounder for Cam - maybe.

if they if they are going to move him, they’d be wise to wait until after the draft or during day two. Find a team that didn’t get their guy in day one. 
 

ironically, that could be the chargers if some crazy stuff happens in front of the sixth pick.

This was posted previously in another thread, with my observation being that "unsolicited" calls would mean they came from outside, so either us or Newton's people.

It's still quite possible he will be back. It is also true that a lot of the talk you see sounds like pre-trade posturing.
