For those who want to tank for Trevor Lawrence?

How do you tank for Trevor Lawrence if we are bringing back Cam Newton?

Surely Rhule/Marty know this. This is why im not buying Cam Newton coming back. They want a rebuild and preferably with a young QB. They can't rebuild with a 31 year old Cam Newton who may be broken physically. If the goal is to get a top QB next year that wont happen with Cam Newton as starter. Cam will not allow us to be the worst team in the NFL, it's not in his DNA.

Just keep that in mind for those who think keeping Cam and tanking for Lawrence is possible.

Yeah, that’s what I’ve been saying. Getting rid of Cam is effectively tanking. It’s not even trying to lose, it’s the reality that if they start Grier and don’t go hog wild in FA (we could get a bunch of good comp picks), we are right there in the bottom.

I just laugh at the anti-tanking folks when both times we’ve done it, we got to a SB in 5 years or less and got to the playoffs in 3 years both times.

It's not.  We either play Grier and Allen and lug through the season with a sunrise on the horizon, or we keep Cam and win less than 8 games, find ourselves on the outside looking in again, and who knows where we would be with Cam's contract moving forward.

Status quo will put us in the same shopping cart as the Lions....that's no mans land.

I'm not interested in tanking for anybody.

The whole idea is honestly kind of silly.

Depends on the situation. If you're in rebuild mode, tank early.

But if you're tanking for one player to fix your team

you're doing it wrong

Tanking for a specific player just isn't smart. The guy can end up getting hurt like Tua or someone could simply suck worse than you and end up getting the #1 overall pick despite you sucking. Then, there's the always present possibility that the prospect you're in love with ends up being an outright bust or perhaps even worse, just decent. Good enough to keep you from pursuing another QB, but not quite good enough to make you a legit contender.

I don't want to tank. I am tired of watching the boys struggle. However, Cam for one year going 9-7 isn't going to make us better long term. If they are going to tank they need to trade him. And if that is the scenario I can take it for one more year to snag a Trevor Lawrence or Justin Fields.

    • Bryce and Dave will determine how many games this team wins next year. It’s not on the WRs. The RBs. LBs. This is about 2 things: 1. Can Bryce continue to come up big in the few key downs that decide most games?  2. Can Canales evolve his play calling to counter punch like the big boys do. Half time adjustments.  teams that score 30+ points on the regular win more games than not. That’s on Bryce and Dave. The offense is top 10 at every position group, save for TE and QB. A baller TE is gravy but not crucial when the receivers are dudes.  The defense is the defense. It’ll be better this season, hopefully by a large margin, but Dave/Bryce is really where it’s at.
    • Normally I'd wholeheartedly agree with this. But I feel like teams figured out this offense after the Raiders game. Bryce was so inept the first 2 games that we couldn't really even run the offense. Dalton's first game showed what we had. But after that game, coverages got a lot tighter and windows were smaller. When Bryce came back in, his ability to extend plays made a big difference. It's really difficult to stop a QB that can beat/escape 1on1 tacklers. It puts a lot of pressure on the defense when you blitz. And he was completing throws in tight coverage with anticipation. Point being Bryce wasn't throwing to wide open receivers that were schemed open by the offense. Occasionally yes. But not often.
    • With the additions we've made to our roster combined with the state of the division and the conference as a whole there is no excuse for this team not to make a legitimate push for 8-9 wins. Anything less is honestly inexcusable. There will be no more free passes for being a doormat in this iteration of the league where even mediocre teams are competing for playoff spots.
