CMC Trade Talk (Might as well get it out there)

Heyo!

This grew out of another thread about Cam so want to hone in on this discussion of Christian.  To summarize what was previously discussed:

In the event Cam Newton is traded, which looks like a complete possibility, many have drawn out the scenario of shipping CMC while he is at max value.

Factors mentioned included the career expectancy of RBs and not risking the value he has now on a rebuilding team if he gets injured or whatnot.  In addition, we'll have to pay him soon with a pretty major deal in an age where that type of money is not allocated to running backs (Even considering he's a dual threat).  I'm not entirely on the trade CMC fence if we do ship Cam but do agree there is a conversation to be had here.

Currently, the average starting RB in the NFL makes $12 million/year.  He is 23 years old, the age of some older rookies, has played 2 full workload seasons, and is really both a receiver and running back.  Top-10 Player in the league right now?  Easily if we're just looking on the offensive side, so his value is incredible at the moment, especially being a dual threat player.

For reference, Zeke Elliott is on a 6 yr/$90 mil package (which I think the Cowboys will/may already regret)...we're probably looking at something in that range.  Something also to note is that CMC hasn't eclipsed 300 carries in a season.  LT carried and received at CMC's capacity (arguably a bit more) for 8 legit seasons and I think both are similar in respect to durability.

What do you think?  Is it worth exploring?  Is he a piece you think we should shape the team around or is he more expendable than is let on?  What would you target in this scenario giving away such a large % of our offensive production?

Saxy PSA: Now let's play nice.  I am simply posing the narrative to generate discussion.  This turned heated elsewhere but I would hope for a fun discussion without people just providing hot takes on the fan base, message board, or general life complaints about their sausage or pie at home. (Edit: I knew the poo was coming haha, had to do it folks! I love you all)

I bid thee adieu. Happy longest Month of the offseason.

I think if you trade Cam there is really very little reason to keep CMC around. That is JMO and I love CMC as a player but the franchise appears to be headed in the direction of tearing it all down, so I just don't see why you would want to build around a "highest paid RB in the NFL" type of contract. The recent history of the teams that shelled out top 5 money to RB's has not been very good. It's just such a small window for the typical elite RB in the NFL. There are very, very, very, very few guys that make 10+ year careers as elite RB's in the NFL.

If there was some fantasy world where we could bring back CMC for a 4-5 year contract between $8-11 mil, I'd be fine with that. But if he is going to command a $15+ mil year contract, I just cannot see the justification for tying up that kind of money in a player that has such a limited average shelf life.

If you wanna go this route, it should be understood as a purely theoretical discussion.

In reality there is zero indication, or even speculation for that matter, that the Panthers have given a single thought in this direction.

There has, however, been discussion of a possible extension.

Narrative created by those who are so infatuated with Cam and only deal in absolutes in regards to his status with the team. CMC isn’t going anywhere and even if there was a possibility of this happening you’d have to imagine this franchise without a face. No Cam, no Greg, no Kuech, and no CMC?

Poorest of the poor marketing strategies. It ain’t happening.

If #1 is gone, then we might as well see what we can get for CMC. We’re a 5 win team with him leading, and with RBs aging horribly, if we can get a 1st then you pull the trigger

My question is if he has high trade value at all. The reason being, a team will know that they can just try and open market bid for him after this coming season. I don't see any scenario where a "sign and trade" happens because the instant we shell out a $13+ mil contract, it is going to be one that most teams are not willing to touch.

Honestly, if the team is serious about rebuilding, I’d unload him for a couple 2nds from teams with high picks.

Sucks it’s come to this, but extending CMC doesn’t seem smart at all; especially since he will be the highest paid RB.

maybe the new coaches will do a better job but i don't think throwing the ball to a running back 10 times a game is really helping a quarterback develop. good offensive linemen would be better for a rookie quarterback. trade mccaffrey for picks and go all in on the line.

Sounds good. So who is this rookie QB, and when are we getting him? If it isn't happening within the next 24 months there is absolutely no reason to hand a record contract to a running back this year.

    • And really, it should be 4 reasons with the last one being that there were ZERO other offensive weapons on that team in 2024, opposing defenses only had to worry about one player all year long and they constantly double and triple teamed him right off the snap all season.  In 2023, we still had Jacob Cowing who had 90 catches that year and was drafted by the 49ers last year, so teams couldn't just send everyone after T-Mac on every passing down.
    • I wonder if the Hornets view Kon and McNeeley more as forwards and plan to ship off Green/Okogie/Smith for center help. I hope they don’t plan to ship off Sexton as I like what he brings to the team. (2) G - Ball, Mann, Simpson (two-way) (3) G - Sexton, Dinwiddie, Connaughton (3) F - Miller, Knueppel, McNeeley, James (two-way) (3) F - Bridges, Williams, Salaun (3) C - Diabate, Kalkbrenner, Plumlee
    • 3 main reasons he was better in 2023 and none of them concern me for his NFL prospects 1. Totally new coaching staff that was a massive downgrade and had god awful play calling and designs, the entire fan base was ready to run the coaching staff out of town a month into their first season and the play caller ended up getting changed because it was so bad. 2. Along with the staff downgrade, his QB played significantly worse after being the Pac 12 Freshman of the Year in 2023.  Constantly missed T-Mac when he was wide open, lost out on a number of TDs and a good amount of yardage, half the time T-Mac still almost made miraculous catches on the bad passes too. 3. He hurt his ankle over the summer and missed all of fall camp only to return to practice a few days before the season started and I think he had to deal with it all season long and was slightly limping at times mid season too, but kept fighting through it to still be a 1st team All American.
