Trent Williams, back to the drawing board

This story sounds vaguely familiar

Williams wants a new deal or a trade

Quote

Washington head coach Ron Rivera has had positive interactions with left tackle Trent Williams, but that alone reportedly won’t be enough to get Williams back into the fold.

Mike Garafolo of NFL Media reports that Williams has told the team that he wants a new contract in order to return after missing the entire 2019 season. If they don’t give him a new deal, Williams has requested a trade to another team.

Going to disagree slightly. He may be 32 but next season is crucial for Cam’s future in Carolina. If Williams doesn’t cost meaningful draft capitol and doesn’t demand a long term deal I could see him as a useful stopgap for a couple of years while we determine if Little has a future at LT and if not find someone who does.

The advantage of blowing up your roster for a rebuild is you have minimal pieces it’s imperative you retain long term and can afford to splurge on a short term solution like Williams if it solves a critical short term need. I’d put fully evaluating Cam next season and giving him every chance to demonstrate he should be extended in that category.

I think it’s more likely than not the skins will want something unreasonable for him or he’ll want a stupid e pensive long term deal, but since I don’t know those things for a fact I’m willing to at least let the possibility hang for now.

Doesn’t sound like a good idea..wants get paid a lot it sounds like.. last time we did that with Khalil it bit us in the ass and we are still paying dead cap for his sorry ass!! No thanks

FWIW spottrac reports Williams current pay as 14.5, so safe to assume he’s looking for significantly more if he sat out over it.

Might be worth a gamble!! Players don’t stick around like in the past .. get a few years out of him to protect Cam..

I could be down with this as long as A) the Skins don’t want too much for a 32 year old player who didn’t play this season. And

B) we don’t give him a long term contract.

He's officially looking for a new contract or a trade, but I think the idea is that whoever he gets traded to will offer him a new contract.

I'm not sold on Little or Daley, but I'm not sure this'd be the way to go either.

    • I'll say 6. I don't know that we learned a whole lot about this team during preseason that we didn't already know. We didn't play the starters enough to really get a feel for what to expect. We had one good drive against the Browns, one 3-and-out and two 3-and-outs against the Texans. That's an extremely small sample size across 3 games regardless of performance. My camp/preseason takeaways: Jalen Coker might be the best WR on this team and is certainly no worse than #2. Nic Scourton is going to be a good player for us. Possibly very good. Bobby Brown was our best free agent addition and will do more to help the defense than anyone. Jack Plummer isn't an NFL QB. Not even a practice squad guy. Having anyone other than Canales and Evero call plays was a really stupid and pointless idea. Our depth is largely non-existent, especially on defense. The three areas we actually DO have depth are on the OL, in the WR corp. and at RB. I can't fathom why Dan Morgan didn't do more to upgrade ILB during the offseason. We better hope Lathan Ransom steps up at FS because if he doesn't we have a massive hole there. For all the hype surrounding Sanders and Evans, Tommy Tremble is still the best TE on the roster. I'm only slightly less enthusiastic going into the regular season than I was a month ago. I think our starters on offense are solid and we should be pretty good there unless Bryce totally regresses. On defense, we're probably bottom 3rd in the league if 100% healthy and significantly worse than that if injuries become an issue. We badly need at least two of our rookies to become high-level players early (ideally one of the pass rushers + Ransom) and at least 2 of our free agent additions (ideally Moehrig + Bobby Brown) to be significant upgrades over last year. Call me pessimistically optimistic 😆
    • 2010 was worse. Not much worse but worse.
    • Lol since 2017 the Panthers are 47-85,    Also since 2017 the Giants are 40-91-1   Lol
