Needs List

MHS831

Recommended Posts

I took a peek at the roster, and thought I would share:

CHECK THESE POSITIONS OFF THE LIST:

  • Safety  (Boston, Reid, Burris---Burris could be a nickel CB--not sure)
  • Defensive End  (Burns, C. Smith, Weatherly, Miller, Obada)
  • Offensive Tackle (Moton, Daley, Little, Okung)
  • Center:  Paradis, Larsen (I think we will upgrade C, but not this year due to contracts)
  • Tight End:  Thomas, Manhertz, and Hemmingway (I think Hemmingway will make the roster--good player)
  • Running Back: McCaffrey, Scarlett, Bonnefon, Davis
  • Fullback: Armah (will Brady use a FB?)
  • Quarterback:  Bridgewater, Allen, Grier (do not be surprised if we take a developmental QB , like Morgan FIU)

NEED TO ADDRESS:

  • Linebacker:  Carter (OLB), Smith (MLB), Thompson (OLB/ILB), Kunaszyk (MLB)
  • Wide Receiver: Moore, Samuel, Zylstra--- Zylsytra is a solid possession WR and should be the #4 after the draft)
  • Defensive Tackles: KK Short (3t), Stacy McGee (1 tech)
  • Cornerback:  Jackson (Elder, Luke on roster--could Burris be the nickel?)
  • Guard:  (Nobody):  You have to think Daley and maybe Little here---but it is a need.

DRAFT PRIORITIES:  (Prediction of round taken, if a player of value is on board)

1. Cornerback:  Even if Burris goes to Nickel, Jackson and a bunch of PS players? (round 1)

2. Defensive Tackle:  It takes four, and we need 3. (round 2)

3. Guard:  We don't have any unless we move a tackle into the job and re-sign GVR or another free agent.  (free agent and round 5)

4. Wide Receiver:  We need a #1/2, move Sameul to the slot, and keep Zylstra as the #4 possession WR.  (Round 3--in this draft, you get second-round value)

5. Linebacker:  While I am high on Kunaszyk, he may not be the guy at MLB--I do not think Shaq is a MLB.  (round 4)

Potential first round picks:  LB Simmons,  DT Brown,  WR Jeudy,  CB Okudah

We'll be running a base 4-3 but given what was deployed at Baylor and that we have Miller, Haynes and Burns, the Flex EDGE talent at DE is going to be used in hybrid looks.  Having Edge rusher talent v. a true 3 down DE is an important distinction.  Weatherly and Burns is nice but imagine a guy like Green-Matos in there as well.

LB wise, Shaq, Carter Jr. are the only two I trust starting.

Offensively, still need an LG, C, RG, WR (probably 2)

Good news is we're still set to tank :)

And yes, GM as well.  I find Tepper and Rhule working together on this concoction isn't the most ideal scenario.  Seems like we could get a Jones-Garrett thing brewing here.  Ahz!

My concern is that I think Tepper is all in on Rhule right now. I'm not sure he sees a need for a strong GM at the moment. Maybe this pending PR nightmare about how the Cam situation was handled will be the wake up call he needed. Maybe it'll be going 3-13 this coming season. Maybe it'll take another season contending for a top 5 pick again after that.

It's just very obvious at this point that this organization severely lacks in quality NFL experience from the owner to the GM to the coaching staff to everyone else in the building because even the media guys have walked. The whole organization is learning on the job right now and I'm pretty much certain we're going to see that when the games start too.

Given how awesome our social media typically is, kinda bewildered by the past month, virus or not.

I don't mind the direction personnel wise, at all, it's been expected.  The dynamics and optics of it all tell me they've got this Tepper-Rhule thing growing with their little boy scout Hurney.  It's weird. Weeird.

Tepper is smitten with Rhule and Rhule probably knows he has a nice patsy in Hurney. He'll fight to keep him because he can control him because Hurney is just tickled pink to be back in an NFL front office. After the rest of the league wouldn't return his phone calls for years he likely thought this opportunity would never come around again and then when JR was forced to sell I'm sure he thought he'd be out on his ass. He'll be more than happy to be Rhule's rubber stamp.

Couldn’t be more true

    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
