PSA: Don't hold your breath

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

If you're keeping your phone handy or wearing out the F5 key on your computer waiting for news right now, you might be wasting your time.

It sounds like the "further news" that the Panthers teased Kyle Bailey with might have been that David Tepper donated a million dollars toward efforts to fight the coronavirus.

Cool, but not the kind of news Panther fans are waiting for.

Barring a Hail Mary from the trade market, it sounds like Cam Newton won't be released until Teddy Bridgewater has his physical and is officially on the team. Situations being what they are now, hard to predict when that happens.

So if you're holding your breath waiting for something to happen tonight, you might want to find something else to do.

People do understand this

The issue is The treatment of the face of the franchise and it’s been pretty shitty if you ask me

Agreed. I was all for trading him knowing we needed to tank or I mean rebuild to get back to the SB. I didn’t think we wanted an extension (lot of money for a lot of injuries the past 4 years) and I honestly didn’t think Cam would play on a one year deal with a craptastic team. That said, just make the call. Put him on the block and get offers/let him explore trades and make your future moves. I understand not releasing him like Greg. No one wanted Greg with that contract. Cam’s got a cheap one year deal and might be willing to wait on an extension if he’s on a team that he can look good on for a year. I honestly thought we had decided to keep Cam and see how he did, but obviously with Teddy that was never in the plan. I’m still not liking the we can win with Teddy plan that Marty seems to have. You don’t miss out on Lawrence, Fields, Howell and maybe a couple others trying to be 8-9 while figuring out your long term QB. Just evaluate and go after the top guys. Don’t hope Love or Eason or the like is the answer, go for it. Treating Cam like crap and half assing the rebuild is about the worst case. If that’s Marty’s plan one can only imagine what crap we do in this year’s draft. Who are this year’s Gaulden, Little and Grier?

FYI: There's still no word yet on when Bridgewater will be taking his physical, or if logistics have even been worked out yet.

Mind you, the Panthers aren't required to wait on this in order to release Newton. Per reports, it just seems to be their preference.

They could easily change their minds if they so desired. And frankly, it would be better for Newton if they just went ahead and did it.

We'll see.

I watched a little tape and this is what I saw.

TB he's very accurate on short and medium passes and the occasional 45 yard deep ball. He also has mobility and knows when to run and has a high pocket presence.

Cam amazing medium and deep balls when healthy. Moderate to low accuracy on the short ball. Is the better runner and athlete of the two but sometimes doesn't know when to run. A healthy prime Cam is better then TB but Is he 100? TB is a good qb from what I saw.

At this point teddy is the better qb

Sadly though, that is not saying much. There were reports that some within the organization believed that a rebuild was not needed and that a retooling was called for. We now know the person voicing the need for a retool only was Marty Hurney (not surprising given that his job is on the line). This is delusional thinking. This team needed a complete rebuild. In fact, I believe it is a team marked by a dearth of talent. A weak-armed QB who needs surrounding talent to even be competitive is NOT the answer.

Bridgewater's  highest TD total is 14. When you analyze his wins, you see that Bridewater wins when his team's defense hold the opponent to under 18 points. The Saints defense averaged giving up 17 points per game in his wins. During his tenure with the Vikings, their defense averaged giving up 19.5 points in his starts (this led to a 17-11 record).

Our defense is horrible! I really want to be wrong, but  believe the Bridgewater signing is horrible. A rebuild was needed and draft capital needed to be used to get a franchise QB rather that throwing $63,000,000 at a guy who is, at best, a game manager and who will be a complete hostage to his surrounding talent of which we are limited. Just awful. I really believe the organization has been set back with this signing.

Teddy B. sounds like a really nice guy and a very pedestrian QB who is really a back-up. We already had at least one of those.

I believe the situation is the Panthers owe Cam $2M no matter what, and if they retain him have to pay him another $19M per the terms of the current contract.

So what is the very last day for the Panthers to release Cam and save the $19M or whatever it is?

That's the day you can expect the Panthers to release Cam.  (unless of course Bus Cook finds a suitable trade before then)

Personally I have no problem with the way Tepper conducts his business and I'm sure we'd all agree he's ruthless --- some would even say he's not a nice guy.

David Tepper grew up poor and even as rich as he now is he isn't going to piss away $2,000,000 until absolutely forced to.  He's going to wait it out and see if some option for saving the $2M presents itself before the deadline to save the $19M.
