2021 Comp pick formula has changed.

Since quarantined and completely confused about why we were signing lower level guys to cancel out the comp picks I did some research.  
Come to find out our FO has not lost their minds.  Probably thanks to Sulimani our CAP specialist we just hired from the Steelers.  

The Comp Pick methods will change with the new CBA in 2021.  

“Under the proposed CBA, that will change. According to the summary provided over the weekend by the NFL Players Association to all players, the system will be revised to exclude “many ‘Core Veterans'” from the equation. Specifically, players who sign one-year deals and who make less than $1.75 million won’t count toward the gains and losses, incentivizing teams to sign those players sooner than later.”

So we are not going to loose a bunch of picks for the lower tier guys.  My guess is that Roberts, Kirkwood, and DeValve will be below that $1.75 mil mark.  So they won’t hurt us.  And Cooper will not count bc he was cut.  

Yes TB cancels out Bradberry for a 3rd.  But Burriss and Weatherly look like 6th round guys who will cancel out Irvin and McCoy.  

So at least will will get the 4th and 5th for Mario and Butler.  And whatever GVR brings.  The only other players that I see is loosing are Cockrell and Daryl Williams that might be over the 1.75  mark.  
 

Bottom line, we will get some assets back from the fire sale

The compensatory draft system has for years caused teams to adjust their interest in unrestricted free agents, refraining from signing them or delaying the pursuit in order to maximize free-agency losses and to minimize gains. All in the hopes of getting the most possible compensatory draft picks the following year 

Under the proposed CBA, that will change. According to the summary provided over the weekend by the NFL Players Association to all players, the system will be revised to exclude “many ‘Core Veterans'” from the equation. Specifically, players who sign one-year deals and who make less than $1.75 million won’t count toward the gains and losses, incentivizing teams to sign those players sooner than later.

The problem, of course, is that teams will find a way to use that shield for players as a sword against them, making take-it-or-leave-it offers of one-year, $1.75 million deals for lower-level free agents with the “or else” being that they won’t be signed until after the compensatory selection formula shuts off in May. So they’ll have to decide whether to take a $1.75 million bird in the hand or wait for whatever they can get later.

Regardless, this is the first meaningful change to the compensatory draft pick system, arguably since the system was first adopted.

They did this so that these lower level players wouldn’t have to wait u til after the draft when comp picks went away to sign.  It may be why these type of players voted yes on the CBA.  The max of  4 comp picks remains the same.

According to the over the cap the number for the player to not count will be closer to $2.5 million.

This is actually good news. Do we know how much we paid these guys?

No. Hopefully not over that 1.75.  Roberts was at 2 mil for the Ravens last year.  Not sure about the rest.

That changes every year depending on the contracts given out during the Free Agent period.  The 1.75 number he is stating will always be the same for the life of the current CBA.  The number for the player to not count will change every year depending on the contracts given out.

Neither of the other two made 1.75M last year. They shouldn’t get it this year and Roberts shouldn’t either.

I’m done complaining about comp picks now. This is good knowing the current CBA changes.

I definitely don’t like Teddy signing just because I don’t like the idea of a bridge QB instead of just getting the top pick (Grier is the same as starting Weinke in 2001 or Clausen in 2010).

Good.  I doubt we would have maxed out on all four comp picks anyhow, but a couple would be nice.  I agree though, the 7th round floor was never a set amount, it changed with the market year-to-year.  Since I've been keeping up with it the past several years, I've seen the floor fluctuate from nearly $3 million to about $1.5 million.  The more lucrative the FA market (more big money contracts) the higher the floor.  In a weak FA market, the lower the floor.

We still have a few FAs that may still get picked up.

      Darrell Jackson would be a fantastic pickup for us, I think he could replace 80% of what A’Shawn gave us last year. With more passing rush upside going forward in the future, I’m a big proponent of large framed defensive tackles. Pairing Derrick Brown with another 6’5 35inch arm length DT would be so fun to watch. Let’s continue being huge in the middle, allow our linebackers to flow to the ball uninterrupted.

      I agree with you on the pick of Thienemen in the first. I think he will still be there and he's a smart, fast and sturdy player. He's who we need back there. In the second, I like Rodriguez over Golday. I agree that off the ball linebackers are desperately needed here, even with our great FA pick up. I think with our third pick, we're going to dip into OT territory instead of the D-line. While I agree that we need another disruptor at the point of attack that is stout enough to just stonewall a center and a guard at the same time, we've got a shaky and expensive O-line at the present that is just about to age out of the game. I think we snag Blake Miller out of Clemson here and give him a year behind Moton to learn and put some weight and strength on. He can also jump right in and play right guard at any time. Also, and this might sound crazy, but anyone who has put up with multiple seasons at Clemson will be able to take the heat and humidity of training camp at the start of the season and early games against the NFCSouth.  Beyond that, your guess is as good as mine. We do need that QB for competition and realistically to study for back-up. Luke Altmyer out of Illinois seems to fit the mold of the point guard type QB that they want from Bryce. That'd make an apples to apples situation that could make coaching and game planning easy. On the other hand North Dakota State's Cole Payton could be an intriguing choice as well as a big dual threat guy. Both could be there for our fourth pick or both could be gone. Will QBs continue to slide this season like last? Who knows?
