The Athletic Mock Draft 5.0

Dane Brugler, who created "The Beast"has put out the Athletic's 5.0 mock draft. It's a 7 round mock draft where he focuses not only on team needs, but scheme and coaching fits. Here are some interesting picks and condensed notes he has to say that pertain to us.

1.04 NYG - Tristan Wirfs, OT, Iowa The Giants decision could come down to their highest ranked tackle or Isaiah Simmons

1.07 CAR - Isaiah Simmons, LB, Clemson Matt Rhule looking for dynamic athletes with football character

1.14 TB - Andrew Thomas, OT, Georgia

1.16 ATL - K'Lavon Chaisson, Edge, LSU

1.24 NO - Patrick Queen, LB, LSU

2.38 CAR - Kristian Fulton, CB, LSU

3.69 CAR - James Lynch, DL, Baylor It wouldn't surprise if Rhule makes a few moves to ensure he drafts Lynch

4.113 CAR - Tyler Biadsz, iOL, Wisconsin

It seems like we'll heavily be leaning toward picking defenders in the first couple of days. Personally I would love if our first four rounds played out like this.

I don't have a huge issue with Lynch in the 3rd. It seems like most consider AJ Epenesa a late 1st/early 2nd type. If that's the case, then Lynch would absolutely be worth a 3rd. They're very similar players both in terms of production and measurables. Epenesa is a little longer and a little more explosive while Lynch is a little heavier and a little stronger, but it's pretty close all the way across the board.

FWIW most people peg Lynch as the 8th-10th best interior defensive lineman. This should land him somewhere in the 3rd round. The great thing about Rhule coming to Carolina is he has recruited, coached, or coached against a lot of these guys who are in the draft. If I know the work ethic and ability of someone I've coached for four years, I'm going to draft him over a chance prospect.

I have a problem with Lynch.  He has a terrific motor, but I see him as a 5 tech more than a 3.  He comes off as an overachiever, and that may not be the case in the NFL....Too important of a position to gamble with emotional picks, if that is what this is/would be.

Heck if Rhule starts this and Marty starts his crap, they will be showing sad fundraising commercials about endangered Panthers while playing Sarah McLachlan background music.

    • I was playing around with the ESPN playoff predictor and it shows if 49ers and Rams finish with same record, the Rams hold the tiebreaker.
    • This is my thinking as well. Seattle played as good as they could on defense and Panthers still had a chance until those back to back turnovers.  I don't think the Rams played particularly well in their game against us, alot things went our way in order to win.  Someone pointed out the Rams were bad on the east coast road games and Seattle has been the better road team but they just fought a hard contested game against the Panthers, and now they travel to San Fran this week for their biggest game of the season to determine the division and if they are the overall #1 seed in the NFC or will be traveling for the Wildcard weekend.  If they lose they then travel back cross the country to play a team they've just beaten two weeks ago, not saying they won't be favored against the Panthers but the energy of hosting our first playoff game in 10 years along with the get back effect of having just lost to this team could be huge.
    • I don’t know about shadowing and all that, but according to this, whatever we are doing is working
