Looking at the names and respective talents that are on this list I was pleasantly surprised where our fanchises number 1 pick ranked.

Quote

2. QB Cam Newton

Newton's 2015 MVP and overall mastery during the Panthers' 17-1 record entering Super Bowl 50 are the main reasons why he is ranked one spot ahead of Palmer. The 2010 Heisman Trophy winner and national champion quarterback, Newton earned Pro Bowl and Offensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2011. That season, Newton, who used his passing and running ability to help lead the Panthers to three consecutive NFC South division titles, led the NFL with a 5.6 yards per carry average. His 14 rushing touchdown that season is the most ever by a quarterback.

A three-time Pro Bowler, Newton earned All-Pro honors in 2015 after throwing a career-high 35 touchdowns against just 10 interceptions. Newton also set NFL history that season, becoming the first player in league history to throw for 35 touchdowns and run for 10 more scores in the same season. Newton and his teammates hit a speed bump in the Super Bowl, however, as the Panthers were upset by game MVP Von Miller and the Broncos, 21-10. It was not one of Newton's better performances, as he lost two fumbles while completing just 18 of his 41 pass attempts.

Like Vick, the pounding Newton has enduring as a mobile quarterback appears to have taken its toll, as Newton remains on the open market after an injury wiped out most of his 2019 season. While he continues to be in pursuit of his next NFL home, Newton has already put up solid career numbers. His 58 career rushing touchdowns is the most by a quarterback, while his 4,806 career rushing yards is the third-highest total for a quarterback. He is also just 18 touchdown passes shy of 200 for his career and less than 1,000 passing yards shy of the 30,000 mark.

Yea that list is kinda poo. Murray and Mayfield definitely deserve to be higher, Fisher, Palmer and Alex Smith definitely deserve to be lower. From a “how successful were they with the team” perspective, can’t argue with Eli at #1, but if we’re judging on how good they are/were he’d be a good 7-8 spots lower. My top three would probably be Cam, Luck, Mario.

All this list tells you is there is a whole bunch of GM's that don't know what the hell they are doing.

Not really... those players probably had tremendous potential or talent but players fail for a bunch of reasons, coaching bad situations, injuries run ins with the law, like more can go wrong than right when trying to get a successful number 1 pick. Nobody really questions the first pick in the draft because they are usually among the best at not only there position but best in the college level that season.

    • I feel like this trade just lives rent free in people's heads and keeps morphing into different things. First thing is that the rumored trade was for future firsts. They wouldn't have any extra picks in 2023; the firsts would have been for 2024 and 2025. With very few exceptions, NFL GMs don't value picks that far away. You have to have a lot of job security to pull that off. Like Chiefs, Eagles, Rams kinda stability. That's obviously not the case with David Tepper, especially since he'd just fired his head coach. No GM except for like Howie Roseman is going to trade an asset you have now for a future asset you probably get to use.  Second, at the time you'd have to assume these are first rounders late in the first round. Obviously currency is currency and the panthers need young players, but these weren't slam dunk top ten picks. At the end of the day there's one pick that separates a first and second round pick.  Lastly, the only place that ever reported this trade was the Rams. All the reporters just repeated what McVay said and it became gospel. We have no idea how serious the negotiations were, if they ever really happened, if the offer was real, etc. And I personally believe McVay and Sneed are the kind of guys who would make up rumors like that to fug up other teams, mostly because I assume if I've thought of it someone smarter than me has.  I don't know how you'd call it the greatest draft haul of all time. Firsts quickly lose their value the farther out they are and Burns had 16.5 sacks last season. And anyway those picks would probably just been tossed into the burning inferno of the Bryce trade up so it's a moot point anyway.
