So Donte was our second best defender and he didn’t record a single stat? Nice. The guy, who’s not even listed in the ESPN box score and has been made fun of for hurting himself while attempting to slow down a runner by diving past him, is our second best defender? Sweet baby Jesus, save us.

This tells me not to take anything from PFF seriously. These ratings don't tell the whole story.  Someone tell me how KK is rated higher than the other DTs that did more than get knocked down multiple times.

Cornerbacks not showing up on the stat sheet can be a good thing. Not saying that applies to Donte here, just saying it overall.

Rating the DLine and Oline is nearly impossible without knowing the assignments. Even NFL coaches have said they couldn't grade players without knowing what the call was.

It's why I've always viewed PFF's ratings as being arrogantly tone deaf. Like in a blown coverage. Yeah, obviously somebody screwed up, but who? Without knowing the actual play call you're left with a wild ass guess.

PFF does a per snap grade so they aren't solely grading on stats.

Depends on who is doing the grading, really. Same way an ex-player or coach can dissect a play when they watch it over and over. We don't know who does the grading, how good they are, etc, etc. It's probably about like any normal workplace, some are doing a bang up job and nailing it, most are just getting by and then some are useless slugs.

It's tough though when there's blown assignments no matter where they happen on the field. You can make an educated guess but without actually knowing the play call it's still a guess.

None of us have also sat down and evaluated each player on each snap. We did the normal fan thing and watched the game, noticing what we noticed at the time.

I would definitely disagree. Players and coaches are more than capable of looking at formations and determining what the scheme was and what the assignments likely are. Otherwise every game would just be a bunch of defenders running around guessing. 

As fans we don't have the experience or knowledge to do that. These guys have tens of thousands of reps doing these things. The only time you might get some serious headscratching is some truly exotic stuff but if you breakdown the film, you can still discern the overall design. Then it is just a matter of the individual battles.

The thing that ends up being subjective is situations where there might be shared responsiblity(say a blocking assignment) who gets dinged for fuging up? I am sure there are plenty to of judgement calls on that.

It's easy to determine what the play call was when everyone does their job, but when someone blows it, it can be tough to determine who. Just look at zone coverages. Okay, that CB sat down while the other CB dropped and the CB who sat down allowed a deep ball over the top. He screwed up, right? Well... maybe. But it could've been a cover 6 or cover 9 look where he did his job correctly and it was the safety who was supposed to drop.

      I think they are holding back to see what they have in the young guys, but I think it's a near certainty at some point they will bring someone else in. Right now (assuming we keep 5 CBs which is normal), the top 5 IMO are: 1) Jaycee Horn 2) Mike Jackson 3) Chau Smith-Wade 4) Shemar Bartholomew  5) Akayleb Evans   Obviously Jaycee is the alpha in that room and paid as such. Need him to stay healthy and continue to play at a Pro-Bowl level. Mike Jack did pretty well all things considered last year, and they gave him lower-level starter money. Fair deal for both sides.  Smith-Wade showed some promise as a slot CB. I think low-key he's a lock for the team. Different size and skill set than the other CBs. Shemar Bartholomew was the most sought after waiver claim last preseason. Was 5th CB most and inactive most of last year. Had a few defensive and ST snaps. Nothing of note good or bad but too small a sample size to make any judgment. Akayleb Evans was a 2022 4th Rounder for the Vikings. Has started 19 games (including Week 18 for the Panthers) in his career and played in 43. Was pretty good in 2023 before getting injured and falling down the depth chart last year. There's some other guys on the outside looking in, but until they show more in training camp I dont see anyway they make the 53. And only Jaycee, Mike Jack, and Smith-Wade are locks to make this roster IMO.

      Was just reading the Ask the Old Guy story on the team's website and was shocked to see that only two 2nd Rounders have signed so far, 30 of them haven't. That isn't normal, the Texans really screwed things up for the rest of the league, no other explanation that I can think of for 30 of the 32 picks to still be unsigned at this point.
