You need to start wondering what you'd give up to get Lawrence

I would also debate that Payton made them great receivers to be fair. Reggie Wayne was rather meh after he left the Colts. And I don't think the Colts O-Line was "great" per say. Good yes, great. No Troy Aikman had a great line, so does Dake in Dallas.

Reggie Wayne was 37 when he left the colts.

Reggie Wayne was an elite route runner and master of creating separation.

Even if it wasn't great it was good enough and allowed Peyton to do what he needed to do.

If anything Teddy's play today could be an argument for us building around him and not having to worry about O-line. Yoy saw he wasn't afraid to take shots, but the Chargers have an elite pass rush and with Cam (love him but he has Big Ben syndrome with holding the ball) we probably would've saw multiple sacks today.

Again not saying we stick with Teddy but this was a good day for him.

I don't see why we couldn't take a guy like Newman and sit him a year behind Teddy and give Newman and redshirt year. Even if his ceiling is more mobile Flacco (which is my comp. Def weaker arm tho but not by ton.) As long as we build well on offense and defense we can win with that.

Again, it’s like Lawrence/Fields in these discussions seems to imply we stop trying to build well. Why do we build well on offense and defense with Newman but you are so opposed to doing the same around a top QB? This isn’t like pre-Cam where QBs taken early first are somehow cap disasters like Bradford and before. That’s what the Chiefs did with Mahomes. They already had a 10-11 win team with Smith but they spent a ton on D and O because Mahomes wasn’t getting paid.

Anyway, seems like the anti top QB posts always seem to mention building around Teddy or a lower pick QB and act like we can’t do what KC did around Mahomes.

If we want to get technical, I believe we could still be in the hunt for Fields. So, if we somehow Draft Fields, I would want to sit him for a year. Like you stated with Newman. Shrugs.

I wouldn't mind that. I don't think you start Fields but he definitely has arm talent and Deshaun Watson escapability.

Ball placement and reading the field are what I hate about him the most. He's wild with his accuracy sometimes and he never scans rhe field.

But hey as long as we agree Lawrence isn't the only way we can succed. Trust me Lawrence is everything I love in a QB and its gonna suck if he ends up in the NFC. But early signs from this coaching staff have been encouraging.

I think Lance may have the highest upside.

I’d be happy with any of the top prospects. If they fail, they fail but it’s the upside we need. I want to win a SB not get stuck in this mediocre place we are right now with very little upside.

I mean this guy does have some plays that look eerily like Mahomes.  Arm is there for sure.

The biggest thing with Lance is he’s gonna need to sit and learn with nfl coaches. He’s a redshirt freshman. One year of college ball in 1AA. He didn’t throw in tight windows because he never had to. A lot of his game was running, which helped open up the pass. He won’t be able to run like he did in college but he has that ability. The team that takes him needs to show patience but the arm talent is jaw dropping. His deep ball is super pretty. If we got this guy and give him a year or two to build up the oline he has the talent to be special.

I agree. I think having Teddy makes it easier for the staff to sit Fields/Lance and let them learn, and hopefully that will help with that sustained success we discussed.

If not, Howell or Rattler it is!

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
