NFL Films tribute to Luke

Captain Morgan

there may have been more violent linebackers. guys who hit harder. guys who got more counting stats. but none of them made their teammates so much better. my lasting memories of watching him play will be him pushing guys into the gaps he needed them in and watching the play come right at them. it's rare to have a guy that is an absolute unicorn in terms of physical ability that is as obsessively committed to the nuance of the game. yeah, maybe he looks about the same on paper as bobby wagner but everybody that ever watched those two men play in their heart of hearts knows that luke was the guy. you knew he was going to be a hall of fame player in his rookie season. his last season as a player broke my heart because you could tell the system change limited how much he could shot call at the LOS and how uninspired all those flyover guys like mccoy and irvin started to play once it was clear we weren't going to be playoff competitive.

The man was truly everything you want in an NFL player, I truly am grateful for his efforts, but part of me is truly happy he retired, junior seau was one of my favorite players to watch when I was little, and his shadow hangs heavy over people who play that position for a long time at a high level.

    • Most teams OLs are dealing with injuries at the end of the season. So by that token all QB play should be horrific across the board, but it's not.  Using the OL as an excuse anytime a QB plays bad is just lazy.  This is the same OL when Bryce had his good games not so long ago.  So do they suck just when Bryce does bad? Obviously they played well enough when y'all were doing your victory laps and saying 'you told us Bryce was the man' in the victories. It goes back to my stance with Bryce all along...he's a low end starting QB.  He'd be a great backup. Bryce is going to have a few really nice games a season at this point in his career, with a few WTF games mixed in, but very middling overall.
    • Good Lord! I bet the O-line play wasn't the worst since 1980.  And @thebdawg, injuries absolutely can make for a bad showing at the end of the day. That's not an excuse, it's just a fact.
    • Defense stepped up after that and held them to a FG. Offense proceeded to turn it over on downs right after.  Was it an incredibly dumb penalty, of course it was. The defense played their asses off though and got zero help from the offense. If you force them to punt at that point instead of the penalty do you really think the offense does anything differently?
