If we would have missed it, the fanbase would be having a nuclear meltdown right now.

I don't see the issue with this call at all. We had one time out, you run a play for a TD you probably don't score anyway, use up more time and then get no shot with the ball. I thought it was a good call.

If Slye misses that easy kick he wasn’t going to make a more difficult one later. I think Rhule watched him miss too many end games kicks so he went for the FG first to try to prevent it.

If you run even one more play, then you have to rely on an onside kick recovery. Period. This strategy was the only way to avoid that. It's also why you have to kick it deep - out of the end zone preferably - instead of trying the onside there. You've got to leave some time for Green Bay to run one play before the 2:00 warning.

Actually makes sense to me. We needed the extra time out and our defense was playing lights out. Chances are Teddy Checkdown would have wasted 90 seconds or so before trying to kick the field goal making an onside kick and FG try unlikely. Rhule took the game out of Teddy's hand before he absolutely had to put it back into it.

In this case, we got to see the ideal outcome of that plan come out. Got the field goal. Touchback. 2 minute warning stopped the clock. Got the 3 and out. 

Unfortunately, we then got the holding call on the return and the biggest flaw in the plan; asking Teddy to drive down the field in crunch time. But that was to be expected. Given how the defense played the second half, I would say this had the better odds than having to rely on an onside kick.

all other things being equal, this way lets you take the touchback instead of a low percentage onside kick for an conversion. 

yet another way coaching has helped us stay in games. ron wouldn't have thought of that in a million years.

I actually like it. Teddy has zero 4th quarter comebacks and Slye has already missed 3 game winners this year. When the same thing keeps failing over and over, you have to start trying something else.

And the crazy thing is, the defense actually did their job and gave teddy a shot.
