Panthers wire synopsis of top prospects

Tackles get over drafted. Go look at a bad tackle year like 2019. Guys like McCoy and Jenkins and Risner go after Dillard and Little and they are much better OL. 2021 is not like 2020 which was a deep T class. That’s when would have been 1st rounders can drop. When the T class isn’t deep you get teaching and Ts get reached for more than C/Gs, almost like QBs.

We have Paradis signed in 2021 and no one else. We can franchise or extend Moton and we’ve got nothing long term on the interior. Again, you’ll have top C/Gs getting pushed down more than 2nd level Ts and I think people get too hung up on finding a tackle rather than worrying about getting the best OL and you get a Greg Little instead of an Erik McCoy. I’d rather have a Creed Humphrey than a Sam Cosmi. Maybe Cosmi turns out well, but we can’t waste another good pick on maybe. If we extend Moton, we need to start pairing him with a solid rest of the OL. If Paradis continues to get further from his 2019 awfulness, take Humphrey and one more G with our 3, 4, 5 or 5 comp and maybe we have 4 of 5 spots set for a bit and use the 2022 1st pick on a LT or whatever else we need.

We have to keep drafting BPA, which unless it was a great tackle class (it isn’t) Is likely IOL. Reaching in the 2018/2019 drafts is what created all the holes we have started to fill with a better 2020 draft.

Each draft class it its own animal. This one has some good ones from what I've read.

I've seen you and one other guy claim this. I literally cannot find an online resource that makes this claim. Care to provide one?

It’s not easy to find depth discussions so far out but here you go:

https://www.profootballnetwork.com/comparing-2021-and-2020-nfl-draft-class/2/

Below is a quote that I agree with. I never said it’s a bad tackle class like 2019 was, but that it’s not as good as last year (not great) where a solid tackle could slip because there were so many 1st rounders. I wholeheartedly believe that the C/Gs available at our 2nd round slot will be better ranked prospects than the Ts available. People get so hung up on LT as if you can throw any schlubs you want in at C/G and have a great OL. If that was the case we made a terrible decision to draft Brown. Seeing as how we have 1 more year of 1 OL under contract, we have a need all over and we can’t reach for the 5th, 6th or 7th best tackle and hope they work out instead of taking the best or 2nd best G or C.

When comparing the 2020 and 2021 offensive tackle classes, there really is no comparison. The 2020 group was completely loaded, featuring Andrew Thomas (Georgia), Jedrick Wills (Alabama), Mekhi Becton (Louisville), Tristian Wirfs (Iowa), Austin Jackson (USC), and Isaiah Wilson (Georgia), all of whom were selected in the first round of the 2020 Draft. The 2021 group does not offer anywhere near the firepower of the 2020 group. However, it does feature the best offensive tackle prospect in either draft class in Oregon’s Penei Sewell.

I think it does but some of these guys have been hurt or opted out so it’s going to be hard to judge. It’s definitely it as good as last year in the 1st after Sewell. I just think this board gets so hung up on LT it’s borderline insane. It’s kind of like the discussions I heard about not wanting Lawrence because it’d be easier to build a team around Teddy. It was an either or, not a white can’t we build around Trevor. Same with LT. It’s like you can’t build a good OL without first having a LT.

We’d be hard pressed to get Sewell if Cincy is in front and if we pass them we may have our pick of QB (don’t be shocked if the Jets go Sewell at 2). If we go QB at 3/4 then we miss the “can’t miss” tackles and pick between the might be solid tackles and the can’t miss IOL. There’s no guarantee for anyone but I’d rather have the 90% great C/G than the 60% great T. Just one man’s opinion.

Scroll up and read the two sources I quoted. There's another source also cited on page one by top dawg that writes for the same site that you quoted. I can cite at least two more that claim this OT class is as talented and deeper than last year's.

Maybe they're all wrong. But as I said, we'll see. I'm not suggesting we reach, I'm suggesting there's a good chance we can get a solid, long-term LT in the second round. That's all I've ever said. I'm not saying we shouldn't consider a C or G at that 2nd round spot. But the IOL class, again, according to various sources, is not as strong as the tackle class and guess what? College tackles can often convert to really good pro guards.

Bottom line, I just want OL picks. And I want them to pick the best OL prospects. If they are tackles in college but they think they'll be better guards in the NFL, I'm absolutely fine with that.

Both of those are prior to the season.  Bulger has done 2 podcasts (prospects to pros) now about the oline prospects this draft on the Athletic.  He goes in depth comparing last years class to this one.   This is not a tackle heavy draft.   In fact a lot of the top prospects are probably end up at the guard position.

Right. Wish they'd done something on Eichenberg, Darrisaw, Jackson. Others have said this OT class is thin, but every scout I've read says the opposite. I guess we'll see.

It's not thin, more tackles might go in the 1st this year than last years. It's not better by any means, but it certainly isn't a bad class. Last years class was one of the best we've seen at the position in a loooong time.

And we basically had our choice of the top prospects............

The Panthers very obviously made the correct selection.

I mean Brown is a great consolation prize but for a team that hasnt had a left tackle in ages it would have made more sense to snag Beckton, wirfs or Wills.  All 3 are cornerstones.    And if we continue to struggle assembling a line your post comes into question.  Much harder to find a 10 year LT than a DT.

Scroll down and look at his ratings for every position. This article is 5 days old. There are at least 6 sites now that I've found that say this is a deep and talented OT class. I'll stick with them.

Thanks

A lot of good prospects and who knows if they fall to us in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.  I expect if we lose tomorrow to be 4-12 going into the draft and we'll end up with a QB in round one.

The writer did a good job pointing out athletic players that seem to fit what Rhule is looking for.

I hope to see more from the Huddle on players that they view to be available in the latter rounds.
