La Canfora on Tepper's desire for Watson/franchise QB

I see this as a way more reasonable take than the folks who are willing to just basically hand over a blank check.

Yeah, we can't just give the entire future away WITH a shitload of first rounders. Our core players are extremely valuable because we have so very few of them. Guys like Burns, Moore, Chinn and perhaps Moton, Brown, YGM, CMC, etc.....those guys are the future of this team. We don't have many on our roster that will likely be here in even three years(and some of those on that list may not either). You have to keep those kind of players around or you are doomed to be in a perpetual rebuild.

Not even close.

You said owners "all fold in these situations."  That's not true.

It is true! Show me one former player who ended up playing out his contract, much less a QB. They ALWAYS end up somewhere else after a season at most! The sit-out is part of the process. You should know that!

I think it was Schefter who reported that Watson said he grew up poor, he has managed his money well and can live off of little. He would be prepared to sit out.

He has enough money to live comfortably for the remainder of his life. As long as he doesn't do foolish things with it or take unwarranted risks investing it, he shouldn't have to work another day if he so chooses.

All true.

His gross contractual pay so far has been almost $41 million...the net-take obviously significantly lower after paying the agent, taxes, etc...

...next 5-years are worth $146,540,000.00 cold hard cash.

That's a lot of money to walk away from because your feelings got hurt -- I don't think he would ever do so.

How about you paint the scenario of their owner eating $35-42 mil in dead cap for 5 years over some sense of "pride?"

He will fold, or he wasn't a very smart businessman, he was just very lucky.

By your standards he is -- by NFL QB standards, not at all.

McNair clearly doesn't care.

I don't believe so, but it is possible.

As it relates to "the NBA mentality" this case with Watson is of landmark status --- I suspect other owners are counseling McNair to not allow precedent to be set here.

well, by NFL standards, Watson is rich

by NFL QB standards Watson is rich

he isn't long term NFL QB rich yet

he isn't superstar QB rich yet

and yeah, the Houston FO definitely cares about the shitshow they have found themselves in and about getting out of it the best way possible.  Whick IMO isn't clear.

and I do agree Watson would be a landmark case.  It would be the NBA arriving.   But as I said, it is only a matter of time.   It is coming.  If it ain't Watson it will be someone soon enough.  And I agree most ownership hopes Hou sits Watson and beats him.   Well, except for the team that thinks they can land him and win.

If a player refuses to play, and isn't getting paid...what are the salary cap rules?

I don't know.

The current McNair inherited his money, nobody said he was smart.

I'm not necessarily in favor of his contract (and given who wrote it that shouldn't be a surprise) but anytime I see someoneone talking about him like he's just a runningback, I make a mental note that this person doesn't know football.

Even the best RB in the NFL is still just a running back. Ladainian Tomlinson was the same sort of RB that CMC is. He also retired without any Super Bowl trophies. Marshall Faulk didn't have any titles until Kurt Warner showed up. That I am talking about eras in which RB's mattered a great deal more.

Take a look at the last 15 leading rushers on the Super Bowl champions and the cost will stick out like a sore thumb. The fact of the matter is, it is a losing strategy to have a running back as one of your highest paid players.

Blah blah blah. Watson is going to end up somewhere else, and he's going to get paid whether you like it or not! $24 mil is not poor by the longest of longshots.

Going solely off of the talk about (3) 1st and CMC, here are two scenarios

1 - trade for Pick 3, draft Fields who is at best a 50/50 shot at becoming above average in the NFL.

Pick 8

Pick 40

2022 1st

That is 3 picks total.

2 - trade for Watson, who is already a proven top 5 QB in the league, a true franchise changing QB

Pick 8

2022 1st

2023 1st

CMC

That is also 3 picks total and CMC.

Pick 8 and the 2022 1st cancel each other out. The difference becomes:

Pick 40 this year for a 50/50 rookie

Versus

2023 1st, CMC for proven top 5 QB

To me pick 40 to get a LT this year is more important than that 2023 1st.

To me it is worth trading CMC to get the proven star.

If our GM cannot continue to build with picks in rounds 2-7 and free agency, then we hired the wrong guy.

They'd be completely insane to not take that deal. A move down to 8, another first and an elite pass rusher on a rookie deal for the #2 overall pick? Yeah, you are really overvaluing that pick by a massive margin.

I am not saying Houston wouldn't turn down my hypothetical Burns offer but any deal involving Burns is going to have to knock that starting price down. A LOT. I have no issues making a trade but there is no reason to trade a player of his caliber away and then give them a boatload of draft picks that absolutely remove any and all ability we would have to replace him.

Everyone is forgetting that other teams can make offers also.  It isn’t as simple as making a good offer, you have to make a better offer than the other teams.

Two 1st and Burns from us or Three 1st from the Jets?

They probably take the Jets offer so the can grab QB2.  They would probably take just 2 first from  the Jets over our offer. Don’t underestimate the allure of being a ole to draft a potential franchise QB.

The money still counts against the cap. They can avoid actually making any payments to him but they don't get to spend that money. Once the season starts, if he is on the roster, his salary counts against the cap.

If Tepper makes this happen he'll have done more good for the franchise in two years than the Leg Shaver did in twenty five

Hey!  That’s “Mister” Leg Shaver.

But yeah, as much as I would love Deshaun, I don’t see it happening without giving up the farm.  They already have David Johnson (even though CMC is clearly better), so I feel like we’d have to throw in defensive players as well.  Brian Burns is the main one I’m concerned about.  I think he’ll keep improving into one of the best.

LeVeon Bell.

The Steelers ultimately let him walk without tagging him, evrn though they had the option of doing so.

Also, apples to oranges!
