M&M: QBs we are not talking about much (Mond/Mills)

IF we are picking one of these guys they need to see the field almost immediately. We already have one of these wasted picks on the roster in Grier, hard pass on another.

Well, that's not how it works. Day three guys, unless they're exceptional (à la Russell Wilson), need to sit and develop!

I know my pick for who I want for QB, but that may well not be something we can be presented with at #8 if things pan out like the prognosticators predict. If that's the case, I do hope we grab an LT or Parsons in the first.

Picking up either of these guys later on, maybe second round, hopefully third, could be something good. Both of them look like they have potential to be more than benchwarmers. Mills could end up being the steal of the draft if he can keep his cool in the face of pro defenses. There's something about what he offers and the fact that Stanford puts out some smart, ambitious football players.

Mond, honestly, I just don't know enough about him. Maybe...

Hard no to Mond. A 45 game starter shouldn’t have that many issues. The upside we see based on tools etc. in fairly inexperienced QBs doesn’t apply. We know who he is at this point.

Nah! That's not exactly true! We know who he is, but we may not exactly know who he can become. After seeing even Jared Goff and more notably Ryan Tannehill take such a leap after looking bad to pedestrian--and we just may see the same from Wentz and even Darnold--I can't judge Mond so harshly before he ever steps foot on the field as a pro. Teaching, development and setting kids up for success still makes a difference, even in the modern NFL.

Not that I disagree because I agree on most prospects… my concern with him is that he’s started so many games for a top school and he’s worked with some good coaches at his level that he shouldn’t be anywhere near as inconsistent as he is. From a consistency standpoint coming into the NFL he’s far behind the other QBs and likely needs even more time to get his fixes in before he can worry about other things.

Have you considered that Clemson, Alabama, BYU, NDSU, and Ohio State were dominant because they had huge advantages at QB relative to their competition, and TAMU did not?

The following is a direct quote from my OP post:

"I wondered how he would look on the roster at Clemson?  At BYU?  At Alabama?  At Ohio State?  At NDSU?  You see, the top 5 QBs in this draft played on teams that dominated their competition most of the time.  In the tape provided, A&M went 4-4 in the conference, 8-5 overall.  They were 8-1 in 2020, fwiw, so a young team matured under Mond's QB play.  It is hard to say that Mond would not do as well as Fields at OSU or Lance at NDS, but there are reasons to think he might be as good. "

So, yup.

Not sure I agree with that.  The Aggies averaged almost 33 points per game . . . ball control sort of implies a grind it out, 23 - 21 game.  Maybe I'm still traumatized from the previous Panthers regime.

I do agree, the Aggies did very well keeping the clock in their favor.  But the offense was pretty balanced, more passes than runs overall.  Very similar to Florida's offense for that matter.

Similar to Florida except when it counted against bama. They took the ball out of his hands and jimbo ran an offense that is not what he prefers. He did that with a senior qb. The guy is Jamies without the high end skills. He will disappear for quarters at a time.

    • Exactly, I mean it as no offense to his coaches, but they coach at Holy Cross and not a Power 5 school for a reason. Given his success at that level and his solid testing, I'm surprised he went undrafted, seems like the type that could excel once he gets NFL level coaching. One of higher expectations I've had for an UDFA in a long time.
