I’m really don’t get why people are hating on this move but were okay with trading for Stafford. They were both in bad situations, but Darnold’s was quite clearly worse and they have won almost the exact same amount of games since Darnold was drafted. Stafford might’ve had the better raw passing numbers but he is also has almost a decade more experience and still has never won anything. The Rams gave up 2 firsts for him and because of that (as well as the Wentz trade) I think we got an a relative steal with Darnold. The top end talent in this draft also seems exceptional so I am also ecstatic that we can potentially take one of Pitts, Parsons or Sewell with our pick and still have a QB with roughly as much upside as some of the QBs that’ll be taken before our pick.

Stafford and Darnold aren't a good comparison. Stafford has been performing at a very high level for a very bad franchise. Darnold has performed very poorly for a very bad franchise.

Plus Stafford has a special arm and Darnold doesn't (although he has a good one).

Younger than Joe Burrow

It certainly sounds good when you read it. But the league has a lot of young QB's that made immediate impacts and are now the elite players at the position. Darnold wasn't one of those guys.

I suspect we are going to find out that a certain portion of Darnold just isn't going to be "fixed" by better/new coaching. Sort of like we found that out with Teddy.

The league is littered with these reclamation projects. They are largely the journeyman backup QB's that we see year in and year out. So, while everyone can quote Brees or Tannehill....they are memorable for a reason, because they were part of the very few that worked out.

My ultimate guess is that if we don't address QB at 8 in the draft, we are in the same position in the 2021 offseason. Needing to find a suitor for an overpriced backup QB as we continue our QB search.

Yeah, Stafford was the best option for us, IMO. Relatively cheap(compared to Watson) and a ready made product, no development needed.

Unfortunately for us, LA wanted him more.

Here's what I'll say, check out Burrow's stats pre and post Brady: https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/joe-burrow-1.html

Rhule and Fitterer have handed our OC (who was getting HC interviews after one year as an NFL OC!) a QB that ticks all the boxes you want physically and mentally. He's also 24 when the season starts.

If this dude (and the QB Coach tbf, 'cos he has some footwork issues to overcome) is as good as they say he is then Darnold will be the future for us. If not then he shouldn't be getting those HC calls.

Strangely I actually prefer the Darnold trade to the Stafford one - I thought Stafford was very much a 'win now' option, but still leaves us struggling to address the OT position with an elite prospect.

The Darnold trade could be good for the next decade plus and allows us to build the team around him.

Obviously Stafford is the better QB, but we need to build a team.

We are in a "win now" mode. It is pretty clear the way the franchise is operating that is the case. Why that is the case is a mystery to me, but it is what it is.

I don't think the Stafford and Darnold deals are really even comparable. Stafford is an established and elite QB in the NFL and Darnold is just a first round bust on his journey towards being a career backup.

The OT needs to be addressed but whether we attempt to do it remains to be seen. It has been many, many years since the Panthers prioritized the OL and this staff/front office seem to value it about the same as previous staffs have.

I don't hate the Darnold deal because it will mainly cost us a potential future starter(2nd rounder) and a couple of potential depth guys, at worst. I don't like the Darnold deal because I don't think any amount of maturing or coaching is likely to fix what is wrong with him. I definitely am not going to be happy when we pick up his 5th year option. That will be a mistake.

Yeah and this was the same thing we heard last offseason but Teddy remained Teddy.

Additionally, the success in college isn't something that should be a real point of reference anymore now that Brady has a full NFL season under his belt.

We will see what happens but I am not too hopeful about Darnold. It would be nice to be wrong, I'll say that.

They've already picked up his 5th year option.

    • I get the rookie QB formula and fully expected to see it implemented. Oh well. For the run game there was no or very little under center stuff until a good ways into the year. At least that is how I am remembering it. And no deep throwing - so stacked boxes which you can say chicken or egg on why.  Hard to run like that.  The QB that people said was so great was pulled for a designated Hail Mary thrower. That’s pretty unusual. And may speak to why we saw few deep balls in some part, along with the OL. To ignore that stuff means you aren’t working with all of the information when you try to mentally model or project what it might be like on the field.  Me, I have a slice of hope that he could maybe be NFL average but getting him to be a plus type of QB is a huge job. It depends on designing the playbook with certain values at the foundation that have to be adhered to first . You have to integrate the other pieces around this one guy’s skill set because he is a real outlier. And he has to learn the under center skill set. Maybe put that Only Positive thread back up people can go there if they don’t want to deal with rightly frustrated fans.
    • Someone has to bare witness to what happens. It's hard to complain if you don't sit through it all.
    • I do not pretend to be infallible or without flaws. I've been wrong on things over the years. We all have. Realistically most of what's been said here and on other Panthers fans social media platforms between the months of May and September for the last several years amounts to little more than spam. People drew lines in the sand over contentious takes on Bridgewater too. To the point of being asked if some people are really a Panthers fan over it. There will be reactionary spam during the season too particularly on gamedays. I've been reading these discussions on the huddle for 20 years. It's the same stuff rehashed the only thing that changes are the names in the front office the coaching staff and the roster. Some fans might be best served to stick to the official team social feeds if they are burned out on all this. Nothing wrong with that either. Different strokes for different folks. We're all human. As for the huddle. Honestly most of us post here out of habit. It's a habit hard to break. No different than the majority of the population that can't stop scrolling Facebook or X. Basically.....
