Tepper wanted Fields.

We didn't take him.

Those aren't just words. That's reality.

You can continue to cling to a hope that what you want to happen will happen, but I just don't see it.

yes, Tepper didn't trump his brand new GM that he literally just hired on his major first decision.

you are claiming that means Tepper will never be involved with football decisions going forward?  I don't buy that.  It's the NFL.    And we don't know these dudes at all.  If Tepper really thinks something is right or wrong...I fully expect him to get what he wants.    Having a preference about a pick isn't exactly the same thing as believing a GM is about to fug up something.

And that has nothing to do with me wanting Fields.  What are you even talking about lol.

Make no mistake, Watson is likely guilty of some very tawdry behavior, but in the eyes of the criminal law, he may just be guilty of being a dumbass. That being the possible case, then you have to determine if he's worth the trouble (which someone will), then it becomes a question as to whether he's learned his lesson, and the issues of acknowledgement of misjudgment, a degree of wrongdoing, repentance and redemption may begin to arise.

But we can win the team character and participation trophy award at the end of the year without him!!!

I'm sure he is involved but right now it looks like he let his GM and coach pick their players. Now, if this draft class takes a dump and is no good, he may be more like Jerruh Jones.

I'm saying when you combine that with Matt Rhule saying that Tepper leaves the football stuff to he and Fitterer, plus Tepper himself saying that he's not an evaluator and he's not going to try to be, it leads to a pretty obvious conclusion.

And yes, I'll take their words as a better source than your feelings.

I don't know if we'll see him in a Panthers Uniform. I for one am ok without him. I'm not saying he wouldn't make us better, but with what we might have to give up to get him and the addition of whatever baggage and character concerns his behavior (warranted or not) has created, I would pass.

I still think he stays in Houston. If he chooses to play and plays well most of this years troubles for him won't amount to much more than a hill of beans, next year. He'll be in a much better position to get himself out of Houston then

I’ll take NFL history over you running aggressively with standard front office talk….by a brand new bunch in the honeymoon phase.

and you don’t need to be talent evaluator when it comes to certain things.  Take an Aaron Rodgers scenario.  A Brady scenario. Making a move there isn’t on par with does the org think Tommy Tremble can be a good TE in the NFL

Appealing to "NFL history" is not only ambiguous, but meaningless. There are just as many hands off owners in NFL history as there are hands on.

The reality is we're still talking about your feelings, not facts.

The Athletic posted a pretty thorough behind the scenes story about the process that led up to Sam Darnold becoming a Panther. In that article, there were two names that were barely mentioned.

One of them was David Tepper.

The other one was Deshaun Watson.

Now I know David Tepper is sitting next to you in the room and all, but even with that I don't think you have better sources than The Athletic does.

You can hope all you want that David Tepper interferes and acquires your favorite player, but everything that's based in actual reality is pointing in the other direction.

And frankly, I think we're all better served talking about the things that are actually happening than things we wish would happen.

Yeah, I think, much like any owner, he will let his underlings run things to a point. I don't think he'll allow them to run things into the ground before sticking his nose in. He just doesn't strike me as that kinda dude. I definitely think that he's personally monitoring the Watson situation.

As an aside, I think people have forgotten that Fitterer said he's going to be in on EVERY deal, and he said it emphatically. What that means if Watson were to again become truly viable is anyone's guess. I do believe Tepper would have to give a nod to any deal involving Watson.

The conversation has nothing to do with me wanting Tepper to do X.   That’s you projecting that.  As noted previously, I’m glad Tepper didn’t make what I wanted to happen come true and overrule the new GM in this draft.   He isn’t a college talent scout.

NFL owners are rarely as hands off as you insist Tepper surely will be going forward.  And that is based off a factual history of what owners consistently do.

and a lot of decisions down the road don’t have anything to do with scouting college talent and I expect Tepper to be involved….especially once we know the strengths and weakness of this current bunch.   Every GM we have had has displayed weakness.  NFL teams largely operate as mom and pop businesses in reality.

Tepper can certainly interfere in decisions...if he wants to be another Jerry Jones or Dan Snyder.

The most successful NFL teams have owners who trust their people. If the people prove they can't be trusted, then you get new people but you don't stick your nose in yourself.

(at least not if you're smart)

I mean Jerry Jones and Dan Synder aren’t the only owners involved in the product that gets put on the field.   They are just the poster children of doing it boldly and it going wrong.

look no further than our own franchise. Jerry Richardson.

You're referring to the guy who insisted on keeping Marty Hurney and reportedly told the personnel guys that Randy Moss was off limits?

Yeah, sure.

I referenced someone doing exactly what I said NFL owners do…

The above is you trying to reframe Jerry Richardson being brought up.  Discussing whose involvement and what was good or bad is a completely different topic.   And Jerry’s contract meddling was some of his worst stuff.  He had a lot more to say than the above.   But NFL owners are going to have a lot to say about their billions they have invested.
