Carolina Panthers Training Camp - Thursday Thread

Bengals were in a similar situation.  Their best lineman was the LT, he was just above average, but still.  That may have played into why they went Chase, that, and the fact they lost AJ Green and the Marshal injury history.

I didn't like Sewell as much as most (I wouldn't have screamed and hugged my HC as the GM when I drafted him), but he's surely a mouldable piece of clay. He hasn't played football in like 15 months and he's so young - if he moves to the RT position he's got to stick there for mine. Can't then ask him to re-learn his footwork in Year 2 to switch to LT.

Training Camp Notebook: Just Play Ball | Carolina Blitz

"

The team scrimmaged more Thursday than any other day during training camp.

Sam Darnold showed off his ability to scramble to extend drives. During one possession the first-team quarterback kept a drive going with his feet, gaining 4 yards and a 1st down. Darnold also rushed for 7 yards on 2nd down during a different possession.

The Panthers struggled mightily in the red zone last year. The team worked specifically on that yesterday and today. Rhule acknowledged that on both days the offense “functioned well” in those situations.

Carolina Panthers LB Clay Johnston’s first-team reps
...
Denzel Perryman and Shaq Thompson weren’t able to recover from injuries quickly enough to participate fully, leaving the former seventh-round pick with a firm chance to stamp his mark in drills.

Johnston is going to be a fun player to watch in the preseason. His boundless enthusiasm for football came across in a big way with the Los Angeles Rams on HBO’s Hard Knocks last summer and although it wasn’t enough to make the team, he was part of the Panthers practice squad all of last season.

This is a solid foundation from which to build in pursuit of making the roster in 2021. Johnston is familiar with Matt Rhule from their time together in college and working with the “1s” was another big boost to his confidence ahead of warmup games.

The chances of Johnston cracking the starting lineup appear slim.

Jermaine Carter seems to be the starter at inside linebacker with Perryman also a key member of the rotation. But making the roster will be a massive achievement for the enthusiastic Johnston regardless.

It’s a small step. But in Johnston’s mind, a pretty significant one.

Carolina Panthers OLB Julian Stanford
...

Shaq Thompson and Denzel Perryman haven’t been risked due to minor injuries. This has allowed Stanford to see time with the 1s and he’s been a constant presence at the second level, really catching the eye according to those observing from the hill.

This is a big boost to Stanford’s chances of making the team. Carolina isn’t blessed with the greatest depth behind the top quartet, so he could be a surprise contributor with a full offseason with the Panthers to call upon this time around.

I hate Teddy as a quarterback in the NFL but he was right about this coaching staffs. They are a bunch of college newbs leaning how to be pro coaches. That’s what happens when you hire nothing but guys that never coached in the NFL.

based on the lack of an off-season last year?

Jones isn't dressed for practice today. On site in a cap tho.

From Rhule with the media today:

Is Daquan kind of a veteran day off?
Yeah yeah I gave him a vet day... I watched him with tape yesterday he's sprinting to the ball down the field …I gave him today so he went lifted and then got a little rehab and came out  .

Man, I hope Darnold can put it together mentally. He throws such a good ball with nice touch.

There's enough data to support that Darnold is a better QB than commonly thought.  Sam's int% was 3.0% last year. There are examples where QBs moved to a better team with a better scheme and dropped their int% from ~3% down to ~2%.

Darnold and the jets beat two teams with winning records (ie good teams) last year.  How many did we beat last year?

    • Give me Anthony Hill Jr or give me death
    • We need a Sam Off Ball Backer to pair with Lloyd. Lloyd is a strong Interior Will especially in Pass Coverage- but that is also Trevin Wallace’s archetype. Need a Rozeboom style run stopper. Rodriguez and Allen fit that
    • There aren’t that many ways to screw Day 2 up.  That’d be them making an obvious reach, or selecting at one of the few positions that we are pretty solid at. Because as excited as we are for the growth and improvement this team is showing, it’s still not an overly talented or deep roster. Honestly, there aren’t really many positions I’d feel bad about. Feelings about Bryce aside (because we are not going to select a QB), it’s really RB (bad positional value) and that’s it. I guess OT too since we grabbed Freeling in Round 1.    While not as high on my wish list as other spots, you can justify WR or TE.     Interior offensive lineman who would likely take over an interior spot either this year (at center) or guard (next for cap casualty of Hunt or Lewis)? Fine by me.   Dlineman? Yes, that’s a highly rotational position and we have zero quality depth.    ILB? Yep, could stand for an upgrade over Wallace.    EDGE? Absolutely wouldn’t hate another option to spell Phillips, Scourton, and Princely.    FS?  Would love to add better coverage skill set to the backend of the defense. Moehrig and Ransom are great in run support but not as good deep. Adding a more traditional FS would allow us to mix and match/run some 3 safety sub packages and or a big nickel type look with a SS down near the line for better run support in possible pass downs.    CB? Could stand to get better at nickel.
