And it’s a really bad take. The panthers don’t exist to stick it to Matt rhule or to acquire lots of cap space. They exist to win games. Suggesting that they should intentionally handicap the team to accomplish either of the former things is S dumb a thing as you can possibly read online.

Who pissed in your cornflakes?

This team isn't winning anything and one single player is not going to change that.  But you do you.

Tepper has wanted Watson this entire time once he clears. That’s really it.

And it’s still likely not to happen and he wants a QB so now we’re looking at a lot of pretty meh options.

We’ve got the Saints, Steelers, Broncos, Packers, Giants, Falcons, WFT all looking for QBs, we’ve got our work cut out. a trade especially for Jimmy is going to be super overvalued and we’ll be wasting so much to get a game manager.

I’m meh on Pickett, Strong, Willis, somewhat interested in Corral or Ridder but this rookie class just ain’t it.

I just wish he put as much desire for greatness at HC as he apparently does at QB.

I see no good options with a ton of storied franchises and teams in much better spots needing QBs.

I’m sorry that you’re operating with a laughably unrealistic pretense of the way the world works so I’ll list it out

-Dave tepper is not going to instruct matt rhule to intentionally do things which hinder the team from developing or winning

-Matt rhule’s job is not to “prepare the roster” for the next coach no matter much Henry Huddler may wish it so

-anyone who doesn’t think the QB position doesn’t have the kind of influence to turn around a team shouldn’t be poisoning others with their bad takes

-the draft has precious little to do with next season and the team isn’t making decisions with that fixation

NFL teams handicap coaches all the time when they know the coach's time is most likely nearing an end.

and we have seen that here too.

NFL teams don't try to win as many games as possible every year.

Lol you’re referring to the lockout? Jerry trying to stick it Peyton Manning does not constitute willfully handicapping a coach with the ultimate hope that he will fail. Tepper had too much riding on this. They aren’t having a fire sale. They aren’t tanking.

Was referring to the end of John Fox.

and I think the 2022 draft should be handled like the 2010 draft.  Only hopefully this time our GM doesn't bomb it.  This draft shouldn't be a Matt Rhule draft.

Not doing everything to win the most games possible in a given year isn't claiming they are tanking or having a fire sale.  All 32 teams aren't in win now windows nor are all 32 confident in their HC they will have next year being the answer going forward.

So what exactly is this in-between between trending up or down?

No team in the league intentionally plans for a .500 season. You are either building or deconstructing. You don’t group together in the board room and say “look, we’re gonna win 7 games this season and then we’re gonna fire you coach, so don’t add any new players and try not to win too much!”

teams either believe they are trending up or down and operate as such. Every move the panthers have made so far-every single one-has indicated which direction they believe they are heading.

dave tepper didn’t keep Matt rhule with the intent to be bad next season, no matter how many absurd fan conspiracies you may have read online.

I mean, every team doesn't fall into the tank for the #1 draft pick or believes they are in a legit SB window.

I would say the Panthers are in a slow rebuild.  Fully aware, that it is likely the rebuild continues on under a new HC.   So I think the Panthers will overall focus on slowly building up and improving foundational aspects of the team continuing to slowly improve.

But you aren't going to waste resources for Matt Rhule to attempt to win as many games as he can this year.   That is counter productive to building something big picture IMO.

There’s no such thing as a “slow rebuild,” the days of the 5 year plan are long since gone, and nothing the panthers have done up to this point suggests the panthers are operating under this pretense.

you’re insinuating some insane notion of secret handshake meetings between tepper and fitterer where they agree to simply let rhule flounder, and it’s delusional. They’re going to sign free agents. They’re going to evaluate maximum impact draft prospects. Nobody working for the panthers is intentionally trying to have a mediocre season by simply waiting it out. Everyone’s job is on the line. Also the notion that a franchise QB isn’t “foundational” is lolz.

I mean, there is when you hire someone unqualified in Matt Rhule to lead a rebuild.

and no, you haven't seen it to date because Matt Rhule had rightfully been given the power and green light.  But now that it is clear he looks like a dud and has high odds of being a lame duck.....yeah, it changes how you go about things if you are a front office.  Or if you are remotely competent.  To an extent you can no longer responsibly be all in on Matt Rhule's vision.

Everyone's job isn't on the line.  Matt Rhule and company are the ones with the job on the line.  And when you are on the hot seat.....you start rightfully getting your hands tied to a degree.   Because a front office has to mitigate how bad Rhule could continue to make things in this window....once most seem to realize he is a mistake.  You have to start thinking about the scenario the next guy will be taking over to continue the rebuild.

Yeah this isnt a hard concept what you are laying out.  Not sure why he isnt understand this.

You’re projecting your own distaste for Matt rhule onto what you think the team should be doing, not that it makes any sense because no organization would simply resign themselves to 5-8 win season without making corresponding moves to prepare for a rebuild.

how will you rationalize all this when players aren’t given away in a firesale? How will you rationalize when the panthers sign players in free agency?

what you’re doing doesn’t exist. Dave tepper isn’t saying to himself, “we spent so much money Sam darnold, our cap, our precious cap, Rhule MUST swallow his medicine.”

it isn’t real. It’s a fantasy conjured by stupid fans who obsess over trivial things like the salary cap as if they personally paid money into it.

    • It all sounds great. The only unknowns are injuries and how they will need to be addressed. Horn has a history as does the newly added Jaelen Phillips and Cooker has yet to play an entire season as well. And then there are the Ikey's - totally unexpecteded injuries that put a major wrench in your plans. I do think its a great plan though.
    • If we pay Bryce like a franchise QB we're completely and utterly buttfuged.
    • In my view, the realistic expectation for this team to compete will start 2027.  At that time, I think we could be looking at the following (this is HIGHLY speculative):   QB:  You know, Bryce.  I am not a fan, but they don't ask me.  But there is reason for hope--and here it is.  Bryce will be entering his prime.  Since we are likely to pay him, there will be changes that I include throughout this exercise--I realistically speculate on what they are going to do with Bryce and then I realistically speculate on what means in terms of the cap and other positions. Bryce HAS IMPROVED.  The idea is that if you give him more weapons and protection, that will continue.  His career:   At this rate, if his growth continues, by 2027 we should expect nearly 30 TDs and about 12 Interceptions and a Rating of about 98.  His completion percentage should settle at 65-66% or so.  If that happens, you can win with it. The following stats demonstrate how the Panthers will be able to afford it (and re-sign Ickey) My guess is they will require about $60m per year. This is why rookies who can play are important.  It also helps us see the blueprint.  You may disagree, but this is the cruel realities of the salary cap. Robert Hunt:  Cut post June 1 and save $19m.  Who do you replace him with?  Ickey. Tershawn Wharton:  Cutting him saves nearly $15m.  We should all hope to see Aaron Hall (UDFA) make the roster and play well.  Regardless, this is a position we would likely have to address in the next draft. Trevin Moehrig:  Cutting Moehrig as the starting SS saves this team $16.5m.   Ransom will be on year 3 of a cheap rookie deal and should be more than ready to take the reins.  their styles are similar.  Furthermore, FS Wheatley (R, 4th round) will be starting. Taylor Moton:  So much depends on his knee, but I have an idea that he can play another 3 years.  extending him could save the team about $5m per year.  Cutting him outright would save the team about $21m. In the most drastic situation, we have to cut Moton and the other three players mentioned.   We would need (in all likelihood) a starting DT and RT.  It is possible that the DE would be addressed, but Wharton's production (so far) could be equaled by a rookie.  Look for a cut free agent and a 2027 draft pick here.  If you cut Moton, you save $21m, and that would be the only big hole to fill.  Having Ickey at RG gives you some depth at T, and Ickey could be the guy.  T could be pick in the 2027 draft (first round), fwiw.  It saves you $21m while costing you $5m, for example. We get younger, creating a core of Freeling, Hecht, and the RT first rounder in 2027) along with Ekownu (second contract in the $15m range, and Lewis, whose contract would be in the $16m range if not extended.)  The OL cuts (Hunt, Moton) would save $40m.  The OL would get younger and still solid with veterans at G.   By cutting Wharton (no brainer if his play stays the same) and Moehrig (good player--but we have Ransom on a rookie contract who would not be that much of a drop off--if any) in addition to Hunt and Moton, we would save over $70m in cap room. We would be able to give Bryce bag  and we would have enough to re-sign Ickey (if the knee is not too risky) to a Guard contract (probably at a discount, coming off that injury).  Furthermore, we could add a RT in the draft (or a RG if Ickey moves to RT) and that would be the only large hole to fill. Correct my logic if you see issues-- On defense, in addition to the aforementioned, Scott ($2m contract) is out, replaced by a 4th round rookie contract. CB Jackson's contract ($7.8m) expires and he is (possibly) replaced by a rookie contract.  At Edge, patrick Jones II's $10m contract expires and he is likely a reserve, and his role is absorbed by Phillips, Scourton, Princely, and possible an UDFA like Isaiah Smith or a 2027 draft pick.   These productive developmental players over the past 2 drafts will pay huge dividends.  On paper, I see the team getting much younger and possibly better while cutting nearly $100m and reallocating that money to get more production.
