I see it the other way around. A deal before the draft, Carolina has the leverage. We can't strike a deal, then we have the option to draft a QB. If the draft comes & goes, where we don't take a QB, then Cleveland can up the asking price because we have no other options.

I love how unpredictable this is. I have no idea what's going to happen. It's refreshing.

I know this sounds crazy, but we can roll with Sam or at least make Cleveland think so.  Baker WILL NOT be on their roster come camp, even if they have to cut him outright.  We have Darnold, as bad as that sounds we at least have that option.  Cleveland doesn't have the option to keep Baker, trust me on that.  He will become toxic to the locker room and a major distraction.  Their front office is well aware of this.

Very well could be true. Or the staff can be stubborn about it and let him ride the pine as #3 for the season and it won't cost them anymore than cutting him. After the season, he walks, and they may get a comp pick out of it. That or trade him if there's an injury to a starter somewhere.

There are a million directions this can go.

Per Aaron Wilson:

No trade is imminent or developing at this time as the Carolina Panthers and Seattle Seahawks continue to contemplate their plans, including potentially drafting a quarterback in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, such as Liberty’s Malik Willis or Pitt’s Kenny Pickett, according to NFL sources.

Those sources emphasized that there is definite interest in Mayfield around the league, including from teams that might pursue him as a free agent in 2023 when his contract expires. They also noted that it’s a matter of timing and quarterback market fluctuation in what remains a fluid situation.

I agree, hopefully we learned our lesson from the Sam trade, probably could have gotten him for just a 3rd or 4th if we'd waiting til after the draft. Or maybe we even had just kept Teddy/drafted Fields if the FO were patient in an obvious rebuild year.

Per Tony Pauline

Both the Seattle Seahawks and Carolina Panthers have an interest in Mayfield, though it must be classified as remote at this point and nothing is pending. Sources close to the situation tell me a trade to either of those teams likely wouldn’t happen until after the first round is completed next Thursday. If Mayfield is not traded by the time the 2022 NFL Draft is over, the quarterback and the Browns could be in for a long haul

An NFC executive told Fansided’s Matt Lombardo the Seahawks are still “very much in the mix” to trade for Baker Mayfield.

Mayfield’s market “has started to intensify,” according to Lombardo, with the Browns looking to move Mayfield ahead of next week’s draft. Seattle has been the top landing spot for Mayfield, but with $15.7 million in cap space, Cleveland would need to cover part of Mayfield's $18 million salary to get a deal done. The Panthers plan to wait until after the draft before considering Mayfield and Jimmy Garoppolo trades, while the Steelers are expected to have Mayfield interest if the Browns grant his release. Whichever team passes on drafting a quarterback could ultimately be where Mayfield ends up.

    • Umm yeah. When did he get it done at the right time? I seem to remember a 4-6 finish and needing Atlanta to win our way into the playoffs but whatever.
    • I mean....no lies detected. See above. We have traded a fortune to draft a guy #1 overall that people have lowered standards for to the point that not playing like Jimmy Clausen and looking like a poor man's Kyle Allen occasionally is worthy of a contract extension making him one of the highest paid QB's in the league. That is cope on steroids.
    • summary: "let's talk about your draft, what did you think about Freeling" Dan:   guys with a huge upside, can come in and compete to start.  High ceiling "he does what for your offense?" Dan:   it's hard to find left tackles, guys that big and athletic.  We have Icky coming off an injury, we signed Walker, I believe your offensive line can never be too strong.  If we're going to win the game, it's gotta be up front on both sides of the ball, so we make a point of emphasis on making both sides of the front as strong as possible. "how many mocks did you see Monro falling to you." Not many times, left tackles are gonna go a lot earlier than when we took him.  We want to add the best player, in free agency or the draft"  that's our philosophy, to get the best players possible. "Hunter and Brazzell." Dan:  we followed the board.  Lee we felt very highly of him , super strong.  Brazzel so flexible and loose, can open the verticle.  Will Lee we held in high regard. "you take a look at your receiver room, Coker, my goodness, your offensive rookie of the year in Tet.  Lost Rico, but there is Jonathan Brooks. " Brooks coming off two knee injuries, he worked his way back, looking great, fully healthy, will help in pass and run game.  Icky, not sure when he's coming back but we're excited about both "plan on extending Bryce" we'll keep talking, will keep internally.  We believe in him, has such a great grasp of Canales and offense, has improved every year. "he's clearly come back from the benching, the arrow is trending up, where does he feel" Bryce knows where we stand with him, when and if a deal gets done, he knows we feel great with him, we'll get something done at the right time. "if this a prove it situation?" everyone in the building has to prove it, has to earn it. Tmac was everything we wanted, his work ethic, he's so big and talented, but he puts the work in, and is a great teammate. "your level of expectation, the building's level of expectation for 2026 "our goal is to win the division every year, we know we have to earn it.  we have to put the work in every day, proving it on the practice field, and our  guys know that." "schedule" we haven't opened at home in 2 or 3 years.  We love prime time games, hope we get some "
