Yeah the good news is we drafted what should be our franchise LT, which was a HUGE need (pun intended). We also have some intrigue at the QB position and something for McAdoo to work with for a relatively cheap cost. OL and QB battles will actually have some interest this offseason vs watching journeymen OL get demolished and Sam battle PJ…

You do if you believe you already have your franchise QB and want to build around him to maximize the window of opportunity that exists before putting the eggs in the basket of an unknown quantity. Here are the other team's situations, I'll put a star beside teams that realistically were expecting to draft a QB

Buffalo - Has a franchise QB locked in

New England - Just drafted a QB in the first last year

Miami - Spent a top 5 pick two years ago on a new QB, it's a make or break year for him

New York Jets - Spent a two pick on a QB last year

Cincinnati - Has a franchise QB locked in

Pittsburgh* - Needs a QB and drafted one in the first round

Cleveland - Just gave up a haul to get a franchise QB

Baltimore - Have a franchise QB

Tennessee* - Tannehill is a question mark enough that Tennessee drafted Willis. You could argue that this may not have been their plan.

Indianapolis - Just traded for Matt Ryan.

Houston - Just drafted Mills in the 3rd last year, showed enough promise to get a chance to lead during a rebuild

Jacksonville - Just drafted a QB number one last year

Kansas City - Has a franchise QB locked in

Las Vegas - Just extended Carr

LA Chargers - Has a franchise QB locked in

Denver - Just traded for a franchise QB

Dallas - Is paying a good QB like a franchise QB

Philadelphia - Hurts was a 2nd rounder two years ago, like Tua he is in a make or break year

WFT* - Just traded for Carson Wentz, who they will find out shortly is not a franchise QB. Took a flyer on Howell.

NY Giants* - Giving one more try to top 10 pick Daniel Jones with a new coaching staff.

Green Bay - Franchise QB that's getting paid 50 million because they pissed him off by trying to find his replacement

Minnesota - Just extended Cousins

Chicago - Just drafted a QB in the first round last year

Detroit* - seem content to use Goff as the bridge QB while they rebuild the rest of the team. Good luck with that.

Tampa - Have the GOAT back again and used a 2nd rounder on a QB last year

New Orleans* - Guess they want to stick with Jameis? Not sure what they'e doing to be honest

Atlanta* - Took Ridder in the 2nd round

LA Rams - Just won a superbowl and extended Stafford

Arizona - Just mended fences with Murray, no way they were going to take a QB high

49ers - Traded 3 first rounders last year to get a QB

Seahawks*- Looks like a complete rebuild after trading Wilson, I guess.

I count 8 teams that were possibly looking at drafting a QB high, not 31 of them.

The real question marks were Atlanta, New Orleans, & Seattle passing on them after all 3 orgs are coming off the situation of having a guy in place for a decade (Ryan, Brees & Wilson) and had the opportunity to take whoever they wanted a few times.  But word from Seattle is that they like Lock (Cough *Stroud)

Stepping back...

New Orleans traded up for Olave so they must think super highly of him.  And then drafted both Trevor Penning #19 and Alontae Taylor at #49 over these guys.  The Alontae Taylor pick tells me the Saints did not have the QBs rated as 1sts.  Maybe just Pickett and at best, they maybe had Taylor as a Late-1, High 2nd and the QBs were more 2nd round ratings, not worth the gamble of passing on Taylor.

It also means SEA had Mafe EDGE #40 and Walker RB #41 slotted higher on their internal boards.   Now were they in their first-round block? or high second?  Being selected in the high second tells me they could have very well had 1st grades.

Atlanta traded UP to take Ebeketie at 38, above the QBs.  Being a high second rounder, trade up, and consensus rankings (for what they're worth), I think he was clearly a 1st rounder on their boards.  High enough, they felt okay waiting to see who would be at their next pick with only Pickett gone.

My gut says some teams that didn't need a QB may have had Malik, Corral, and/or Ridder as late-1sts.  Most probably had them as high to mid second rounders.

Hype Train GIF by Leroy Patterson

Just let that poor kid play without yall putting the entire year on his shoulders.

Good news is it won't take much either way to BE better than the sole 1st round QB. That is a lot more fun from where I am sitting.

Do all 32 teams think they needed a QB in the first 2 rounds of this years draft? How many of them did Need a highly drafted QB?

If you think he's an NFL starting QB you take him in the 2nd round even if you've got Mahomes or Allen at QB.

Quality starting NFL QBs are as rare as hens' teeth - you'd get your return for him in a trade down the line.

Name a time that this actually has worked (especially since this QB won’t play to show that he’s worth anything unless your starter is injured).

This is all fair. Just the idea that he wasn’t worth the pick because roughly 3/4 of the teams who had their plan set before the draft “passed on him twice or more” is what I take exception to.

@kungfoodude you better bump this thread if either extreme happens to Scott Finessers rookies classes..

I highly doubt I will remember this specific thread but I will remember if I am right or wrong. I have hit on quite a few prospects but I still remember my huge whiffs too. Cam Newton being one.

Jimmy G? Brissett?

Jimmy G was taken in the second and traded for a second rounder 4 years later. Brissett was a third rounder and traded straight up for Philip Dorsett who averaged like 20 yards a game. Not sure how those moves justify taking a backup qb in the second when there are other players who can help your team now.
