Charlotte Hornets Free Agency Moves

The Martin contract is meh, it depends on if he keeps progressing. He’s a good defender and has gotten better every year so hopefully that continues. His contract is slightly less than Gary Payton’s and I think Martin is better than Payton so there is that. I also wish it was a three year deal instead of a four year deal.

Personally I’d have been much more comfortable at 3x$20M

As someone mentioned above, Charlotte is going to have to overpay which is why it’s important that we draft and develop well while those players are on their entry contracts. This is why trading away our second round pick continues to be a baffling decision.

Younger than Payton too. I like the contract and Clifford is going love Cody.

It’s not a massive overpay but there are players that are better than Martin (for example: Diallo) making less money on a worse team. I also would have preferred a three year deal.

You keep trying to show your knowledge of basketball but then bring "Diallo" as your example??  You might as well said the 2020 version of Harlod Minor.. Diallo more athletic but he doesn't play defense as good as Cody nor is he near the shooter or play maker Cody is.. What are you talking about??

Cody not nearly getting the playing time is a better Shooter and defender..

What numbers were you looking at??

He’s not a better defender by $3M per year, I’ll also take Diallo’s PER over Martin’s indicating that Diallo is the more efficient player while making a lot less.

Are you even looking at the numbers??

Cody avg more steals, Less fouls, same blocks, less To , more assist and way better 3 point shooter.. And as a Hornets fan we all know Cody's is asked on a nightly basis to cover the best perimeter player on opposing teams 1 thru 3.. Is Diallo asked to do that really??

Numbers aren’t all there is to basketball, that’s what’s great about the player efficiency rating, it calculates a players overall impact in all areas. And yes, Diallo does guard the opposing teams best player, he’s Detroit’s defensive specialist and averages more steals per game than Martin.

Reports are that the Hornets were one of five or so teams that talked to the Jazz about Mitchell.

Bill Simmons came up with a trade idea of Hayward, Oubre, Bouknight, three first rounders, and one pick swap for Mitchell and Beasley.

No idea what the Hornets would do about the SF position unless they played small…

G - Ball,

G - Mitchell, Beasley, McGowens

G/F - Rozier, Martin, McDaniels

F - Washington, Thor, Jones

C - Plumlee, Williams, Richards

The Hornets would probably have just enough money to bring back Kemba to complete their roster.

Could always go big and have Thor play some minutes at SF.

I actually like Thor, I think he showed what he can do in the last summer league game. If you put him in a lineup with Ball, Mitchell, and Washington then he’ll draw the easiest assignment and I think he’d take advantage.

Really, the only player that I’d be concerned about getting meaningful minutes is Kai, he still needs another year of development. Richards might fall into that group as well but at this point he is what he is. I’ll withhold judgment on Richards until I see him against other NBA players in preseason.

Ultimately, I’d be fine playing small ball to start the game then adjusting to matchups as the game goes on.

Starters - Ball, Mitchell, Rozier, Washington, Plumlee

Rotational - Kemba, Beasley, Martin, Thor, McDaniels, Williams, Richards

Bench - McGowens, Jones

If Bridges somehow doesn’t get jail time then try to trade him for a depth SF. It probably wouldn’t be a game changing player but it’s better than having Bridges on the roster.

Highly doubt that this is article is quoting real sources but would anyone do this deal?

https://heavy.com/sports/miami-heat/gordon-hayward-hornets-trade/

Hayward for Herro, Robinson, and Yurtseven…

“If you want to give up [Tyler] Herro before you pay him and you want to move [Duncan] Robinson, you would have to add a pick, but those two guys and Omer [Yurtseven], that might be enough to get Hayward if the Hornets decide to reconfigure. It’s a short-term move for Miami, but they need to make their move now. You can play him at the 3 and go big or go small at the 4. He’s a guy they’ve had interest in before.”

G - Ball, Bouknight

G/F - Herro, Oubre, McDaniels

F - Washington, Thor, Jones

C - Plumlee, Williams, Yurtseven, Richards

I'd do Rozier for Herro, but not sure about Hayward for him since that would leave Oubre as potentially the only SF on the team. Even if Bridges doesn't get suspended or thrown out of the league, I'd want him off the team. Bridges for Herro is another trade I'd do.

    • It puts more pressure on being right, I always feel trading back is the move 97/100 times. There are times where you fall in love and if that guy is only 7 spots away and the cost is only a 6th or pick swap......why not?? so long the cost is low, Im more willing to do so.  Still one of the best teams at trading back and they torn apart the Panthers on those trades; Pats. You still have to pick the players, that's what happens. In theory you should also add picks, but it does get to point of eight 3rd rounders or two late 1st and a 2nd?? I mean every draft is different, so the talent maybe not fall off a cliff after pick 50. Case by case deal, but vastly I prefer to trade back.....another curve if you trade back and the scouts/coaches have not planned for it. You have to be ready and know the spot you are trading too (everyone). Just like trading out of 1st round two weeks before the draft, that hurts your team as they have been focused on pick 10 and now its wait until pick 42....
    • 🏈 Offense QB: Jack Trudeau RB: Derek Loville FB: Howard Griffith WR: Mark Carrier WR: Willie Green TE: Wesley Walls LT: Todd Steussie LG: Matt Elliott 😄 Jeff Christy RG: Lance Scott RT: Blake Brockermeyer 🛡️ Defense DE: Kevin Greene DT: Eric Swann DT: Greg Kragen DE: Frank Kearse OLB: Lamar Lathon MLB: Sam Mills OLB: Michael Barrow CB: Tyrone Poole CB: Richard Buckner S: Brett Maxie S: Chad Cota
    • IDK, just I know these mock drafts are time "wasters" and even more before FA cause that does change a huge portion of the needs. I think Panthers are in on Lloyd, but just like Milton Williams if the numbers get too high they will change course and still sign one of the lesser ILB. I've also seen reports Panthers want boom back as well, but as STer/backup.   Personally Ive put Wallance in the Ickey, Brooks zone....... Acting like he's not on the team and if he shows out during OTAs, mini, and TC GREEEAT!!! I feel Panthers need to sign at least one and draft 1-2....hell even add another Bam-like UDFA in the UD pool too. Trade is on the table, there have been many trades than past years......   Given the team history, the LB corp is saddest ever. Still the league isnt paying ILB and Panthers finally got with that trend. I do feel Evero wants a IBL that can blitz and everyone wants one able to pass cover.  I feel no matter what, Panthers will draft one in the mid rounds and add a couple in the UDFA class.
