What’s up everybody. Hope y’all have had a great summer. Billy is on vacation this week, but I’ll be putting out a new podcast each day chronicling that morning’s practice session.

Today was fairly general in scope (I was only on site for an hour), but hopefully you can gain some insight from this episode.

More episodes throughout the week. It’s been an interesting group to watch so far.

High praise for the O-line 😐

It’s almost as if they actually signed a couple of rock solid starting caliber players to start on the interior. I know they’re doing a lot of tinkering at left tackle, but nothing comes close to the mess I saw unfolding at camp last year

I'm not a fan of the "tinkering" honestly, but I'll wait and see what happens.

Well, all I can say: it’s time to stop giving Sam and Baker equal reps at this point. Mayfield has acquitted himself nicely so far, in short order, time to move forward and let Sam and Corral start splitting those backup reps up. I get it, competition, now, let’s start getting down to business. I gave Sam a really good look too. There’s just not anything jumping out as significantly better. Going to be interesting to see how it looks on Friday and Saturday.

Yeah, I don't feel the need for the "competition" at quarterback to continue. Ditto the offensive line.

It's time to start building chemistry with the starters.

We'll know more about the competition by Monday.

Just generally, I get the feel that Baker is fighting for it, and Sam is just going through his motions. This might just be their natural demeanor. That being the case, the competition might just be over.

It's not over 'til the fat man--err, maybe not-so-fat-man--calls it though.

    • Kalkbrenner and Sion James received regular contracts and not two ways, so the Hornets have some work to do to cut the roster size down.
    • Gustavsson would be insane. I think we would have to break the bank to afford that move. Which, I don't think is necessarily a bad idea. Ultimately, Freddie isn't likely to be around more than a couple of seasons more. We can all agree that unless they have a fleet of sports psychologists working on Kochetkov, he will never be capable of getting his head on straight enough to compete.
    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
