With Haynes on ice, we need to prioritize an Edge

We have been looking to bolster the line, now we just need to make it happen. We weren't deep to begin with. It kinda seems funny to be talking like Haynes is a key player and his potential loss is big, but he's simply productive when on the field. We need to make sure there's a next man up that can actually contribute if not replace him.

I'd be looking at three guys:

-Takk McKinley (only 26, and maybe the most likely to fill a Haynes role)

-Trey Flowers (might cost the most, but probably doesn't deserve it)

-Carl Nassib (29, like Flowers, and should be the cheaper option)

Thoughts!

I think we have who we have at this point.

Lord I hope not…

From a money ball perspective (assuming that Haynes will miss time), the Panthers are needing to replace 15.5 sacks (Reddick, Haynes, and Fox).

You can’t factor in Smith or Barno because they are probably just special teams players at this point. So in reality, that’s 15.5 sacks being replaced by 3.5 sacks (Wilson and Littleton) and 3.0 of those sacks (Wilson) may or may not be eligible to play.

It seems like the thought process was that Luvu, YGM, Haynes, and Wilson could collectively make up for the loss of Reddick. Now we are in a position where two of those guys might not be available.

I’d get all three of the players listed above (McKinley, Flowers, and Nassib) plus Dee Ford (if he can walk without hurting his back) in for a visit.

The Panthers have plenty of cap space and signing a guy to a one year deal isn’t going to jeopardize it for the future either.

Carl Nassib would be interesting. With it being the South would he even come here? Would they clear it with the team to make sure no problems? I don't think homophobia is that rampant but the NFL is as masculine as it gets and this forum would be even more of shithole that it normally is if we got him but he does seem like the best option.

More options.

I mean, I'd take JPP or Griffen, but talking about possibly expensive Band-Aids. I could be wrong, but I don't think you'd get the best return on your investment with those guys. I think that the younger guys would be a better investment in the short and long term.

Should have already been prioritizing it. You're only as good as your depth and we already let a productive pass rusher walk. Instead we have sat on our hands. Probably stuck with what we've got minus a possible addition or two after cuts.

I’m personally under the impression that all of the guys would be band-aids generally because I feel like if Rhule and Fitterer wanted to truly address the position then they’d have done it earlier… no idea why edge was neglected like this.

Anywho, I suspect that anyone they bring in would be coming on a one year deal which matters neither here nor there in regards to the cap because 1) We have tons of cap space and 2) The deal would expire at the end of the season.

The final option is to wait for cutdowns and hope that a Dwan Edwards (in regards to impact, not position) caliber player falls into our laps.

Regardless, the position definitely needs to be addressed.

If Haynes being out is a four-alarm fire for this team then we were fuged from the start.

Still, we should have signed Dunlap when we had the chance.

Don’t fault the Panthers for that, he got a very good contract from a team that’s projected to be much better than us. The Panthers would have had to pay Dunlap $10M for his services and while it probably would have only been a one year deal, eventually you have to tell a guy he ain’t worth that.

I didn't say it was a great situation. We basically swapped weaknesses this year. Offense is better but the defense has some holes that are not going to be plugged. It's why I don't see us winning more than 8 games this year.

We certainly swapped weakness’s but we didn’t necessarily have to, we had more than enough cap space to bring back Reddick. We could have also gone the young route and brought in someone like Dorance Armstrong. The final option would have been to splurge on a one year contract for a guy like Clowney.

We didn’t do either of things and now it’s looking like edge is going to be a major issue.

    • It's not football OR basketball. Football runs the college sports world now. The ACC went all in on football with their expansion adding VT and Miami they just bet on bad horses. Those programs had peaked and were on the slide. This latest expansion reeks of sheer desperation. Cal, Stanford, and SMU? LOLOLOLOL  Those programs haven't been relevant for decades and we're the only P5 conference that would even consider them. It's over. FSU is suing to get out. Clemson is suing to get out. UNC wants out they're just too polite to cause a ruckus. It's a wrap. It's over.
