Final.

Canes 4 - Kittens 3

Goal 1 - Burns (from Teravainen)

Goal 2 - Svechnikov (from Slavin and Necas)

Goal 3 - Necas (from Svechnikov and Bear)

Goal 4 - Burns (from Kase and Slavin)

A few notes through three games:

- Svechnikov, Coghlan, and Burns have been my three stars through preseason.

- Pacioretty is exactly what this team needs and he can’t get healthy soon enough. There will be games like today where Turbo, Aho, and Jarvis just can’t find the net. Having someone like Paccioretty will take a lot of pressure off the top line.

- Svechnikov, Kotkaniemi, and Necas has been our best line in my opinion, I’m expecting a massive year from Svechnikov.

- I think Stastny is better suited to play with Staal and Fast as where Kase is more of a 4RW.

- The fourth line seems to be fluid but some combination of Martinook, Drury, Kase, Stromwall, Stepan, and Noesen will make for a really nice fourth line.

- Burns is going to be a Godsend for the PP and I wouldn’t be totally shocked to see him put up 70+ points with the usage that he’s going to get. Slavin and Burns are going to be one of the best defensive pairings in the league.

- As seen today, Skjei and Pesce are vital to this team. Not having our second pairing out there really showed.

- de Haan and Coghlan have looked great and I fully expect them to be the third pairing with either one able to play up a pair should an injury occur.

- As seen today, Bear doesn’t really do anything well and with Chatfield no longer waiver exempt, I think you have to move Bear… I wouldn’t risk trying to sneak Chatfield through waivers.

- Andersen may need another game, he looked a little rusty today. I’d consider giving him one more game since he’s been out for so long. On the other hand, Raanta looked really good during his two periods a couple days ago.

I’ll tell y’all. That score wasn’t as close as the game was. Canes had 40+ shots on goal to the panthers 6 or so. The canes absolutely dominated that game.

Officially 47 to 8. That is just ridiculous. However 3 goals on 8 shots is also ridiculous.

First one Andersen had no shot of saving. Nice saucer pass over Bear and the Panthers player had a wide open net.

The other two I thought he could have saved. On the second one, Seeley didn’t box out Lomberg well enough but I’ve seen Freddie save that shot before. I don’t think Dalpe’s goal was anything special either. Freddie has definitely made that save before as well.

Andersen may need one more game to shake the rust off.

He also faced like two shots up until that point it can get you out of a groove.

True but Tripp made the comment today that Freddie stated previously that it doesn’t matter how many shots he faces because of how systematic he is. Might just be fluff from Freddie though.

Coming off an injury he’s probably rustier than most.

I missed the game, did we not play Pesce and Skjei? I assume it was just to get some looks at other pairings if so?

Yeah, I guess Rod just wanted to get continued looks at other guys. I thought de Haan looked really good but I don’t like handicapping him with Bear. I think pairing him with an offensive-defenseman like Coghlan would be beneficial.

So what are our most likely defensive pairings?

If I had to guess:

Slavin - Burns

Skjei - Pesce

de Haan - Coghlan

Chatfield

Chatfield is no longer waiver exempt and I personally think he’d get claimed if we try to send him down; Bear on the other hand is overpaid for what he does.

The Canes could try to carry eight defensemen (Slavin, Burns, Skjei, Pesce, de Haan, Coghlan, Chatfield, and Bear) but I think juggling eight guys with only six spots getting playing time could get messy.

I’d trade Bear for a third or fourth round pick and be done with it.

I feel like de Haan and Coghlan have played well enough that I’d be comfortable with either one jumping up into the top four should an injury occur, and call-up wise, we could always bring up Lajoie, Lagesson, or Dronov to fill out the bottom pairing.

    • frank, that ball was very catchable where it hit his hands. I don't even think he bent at waist until after he dropped it. He actually slows his pace to position himself to catch the ball. That will never be a pass I'd blame on the QB.   NFL+ _ Live Games on mobile, NFL RedZone, NFL Network and More! - Google Chrome 2026-01-15 13-54-54.mp4
    • https://overthecap.com/position/left-guard   Lewis is the 9th highest paid Left Guard in the league. I bet it was higher when the deal was done two years ago.    https://overthecap.com/position/right-guard Hunt #3 highest Right Guard   There is a tab in the upper left portion of the graphic that allows looking at the different positions.
    • It was a great play, but a better catch than throw. The TE boxes out Moehrig for position. Jumps to catch the ball. Catches it and turns 180 degrees while he's still in the air. Comes down and toe taps to stay in bounds and lunges for the goal post. That first part where he boxes out Moehrig for the ball is huge. If he doesn't do that and simply fades back to catch the ball (this is why Bryce doesn't trust XL), then Moehrig likely undercuts the pass for a break up or INT. Stafford trusts his receivers to make plays for him. Here I slowed it down so you can see it. Great play but amazing catch and score by the TE.  NFL+ _ Live Games on mobile, NFL RedZone, NFL Network and More! - Google Chrome 2026-01-15 13-45-32.mp4 NFL+ _ Live Games on mobile, NFL RedZone, NFL Network and More! - Google Chrome 2026-01-15 13-44-37.mp4
