Sounds like Scott Fitterer will continue as Panthers GM in '23

Corral looked like the worst rookie QB in preseason, there’s no questioning that.

Agreed, but not because he was given a fair chance.  This was a huge talking point during pre-season but Rhule was all about making Mayfield the starter in a bogus competition between him and Darnold.  The "future QB of this franchise" wasn't given any real opportunity to be evaluated.  He was given 5 minutes at the end of practice which equates to 4 or 5 plays per session.  Come on, there is NO WAY IN HELL you are going to tell me that based on his preseason performance he's a bust.

Had Rhule truly given him a fair shot and he looked bad, maybe I could agree with you.  He looked bad in his first preseason game.  His second game he looked much better, though many just point out how bad he looked game one. No one wants to acknowledge his performance prior to getting hurt was better.  That doesn't help the narrative that we MUST draft a QB in 2023.  Rhule put us in this situation where we'll probably draft a QB.  But for all we know we could end up with 2 very good QBs.

YOU NOR I TRULY KNOW.  Anyone that says he's bust, or a superstar is pure speculation.

Looks like Fitterer is staying (we’ll know for sure after coach hire), but he doesn’t deserve a chance anymore than other available GM candidates. I just want a good GM.

None of us know the true decision-making power Rhule had over Fitterer.  You say more, some say much less, I've never tried to assume anything because all I know is Tepper gave Rhule far too much power.

I agree that a GM and Coach need to be like hand and glove.  Given Rhule was in place 1 year ahead of Fitterer I would believe Fitterer took the job knowing he wasn't going to have full control.  When we hired Fitterer many on this board wanted him as our top choice.  I'd like to see what he can do without the shackles he had with Rhule.  It would a shame if we dump him for someone else and he goes onto building a powerhouse somewhere else.

Anytime you change coach and/or GM you are gambling, correct?  In hindsight, you'd say Rhule was better than Rivera? I wouldn't.   Changing GM's isn't always the right move.  How did Gettleman work out for us? He was 50/50 on first round draft picks, he jettisoned our best WR without finding one viable replacement. Hurney was terrible but IMO Gettleman was worse. Everyone thought he was a savior (including myself) He talked a good game but in the end he sucked.

I get your opinion and as you said, he's staying so hopefully, I'm right and you're wrong because if you're right, we just wasted another year.

One thing I vividly remember from this offseason was just how much Fitterer talked about the best approach being to draft a quarterback and build around him.

He kept doing so right up to draft day. At times it almost felt like he was pleading a case. Really made me wonder what was going on behind the scenes.

Heck, right after Corral was drafted (but before the Mayfield trade) he was talking about building around Corral as the future.

And then camp happened, preseason happened, injury happened, and here we are.

What really gets me is Corral wasn't included in the competition.  I agree he had an uphill climb to move past both of them, but we would have had a better evaluation of him going into the 2023 draft.  Instead, he got bumped to the bottom of the barrel and receive no attention whatsoever.

This takes us back to Rhule's Redshirt Freshman concept.

Hypothetical scenario:  What if, Corral looked the part, did some good things with a good O-line.  We end up with the first pick in 2023 but are satisfied that Corral looks to be the answer.  Now we are in the position to trade down and get several picks for the #1 spot.  We could have reaped a nice haul for the #1 pick.

Because Rhule failure to give him a shot, we'll never really know and are forced to take another QB and basically gave away our 3rd round pick in 2023.

When the stories were coming out about how they were running camp, I said at the time that Rhule was treating him more like a college freshman than an NFL rookie.

I was referring to your comment back then.

It really screws us going into 2023 draft.  We could have had so many other options if we had a true gauge of Corral's QB skills.

I thought you might be.

My word, I'm happy he's gone.

I like corral.  I thought he should have been #2 on the depth chart even after we traded for Baker.  We should have cut darnold and just started out like that.  What rhule did to the kid is unforgivable and probably career ruining.  Having said that its not a good sign that a huge knock on you was your slight frame and having and playing through injuries.  Maybe his injury was a freak one but it doesnt really matter as he is out for the year

Definitely, I truly think if Corral was given some time with our new offensive line he would have fared much better.

The injury bug that seemed to be hovering over Corral definitely doesn't help his case.

So next year he is learning a new offense, coming off a major injury (he cannot practice until aug) with a new coaching staff and a shiny new #1 pick ahead of him.  The odds are beyond astronomical

Yep Rhule really fugged that up.  We'll see how well Corral heals.  Most of the stuff he'll do is non-contact anyhow.

    • Am I reading this right? We've had awful QB play for over half a decade...and we'd pass on Dak because he has no "clutch gene" or can't get it done in the playoffs--something we haven't sniffed and have no reason to believe we will for years to come?!? Sorry, but this sounds like a starving man turning down a box of crackers because they're Great Value instead of Ritz. If a Great Value QB is available when you have none, there is no deliberation needed.
