What I'd like to see for the rest of the year

Good post.

My 'like to see's' would be..

1. Use CMC much more as a slot WR or a WR out of the backfield. Give the other RB's all the inside runs. Lets see what he can do at WR and save him for next season.

2. Cade Mays needs reps. Hes a boom or bust player.

3. TMJ needs significant reps.

4. Give Brandon Smith reps at OLB and DE. He is a physical Micah Perasons... lets see if we can create that.

I agree on CMC. No need to run the crap out of him on a losing season. I also agree with TMJ and Smith, lets see what they got.

On the other hand, I see no real rush to test Mays. Corbett's contract all but guarantees he's our RG next season and Mays is on a cheapy cheap contract. There was camp talk about him at center, but no need to fug with an o-line that is finally playing well together by trying to force him into a new position.

WIlks is trying to win, I doubt he dials it back with cmac this season especially given what I watched on Sunday.

We need to trade CMC though. I get that he’s a phenomenal talent. But you can find stud RBs on day 2 of the draft and they’re a lot cheaper. I’m not talking trading him for peanuts though I want 2 2s or a first

You know, that is correct.  CMC should be traded to a good team, such as the Bills.  We have some RB's that can use the development from more action.

If that gameplan by him on Sunday was him trying to win, then oh wee mayne

The 21 passes the Panthers attempted Sunday traveled an average of just 0.9 yards beyond the line of scrimmage. That’s the lowest average depth of target for any team in a single game dating back to the start of TruMedia’s database in 2014 (the previous low was 1.76 by the Chiefs in a 34-7 win against the Rams in 2014).

As I look ahead to 2023, my goal is to optimize our chances for the #1 pick without compromising the opportunity to build a perennial contender and still make the 2022 season watchable. How?

1. Don't trade good players away without a ransom. We need the foundations of a team for the future. Unless the player has no future with us, hold onto them. It will make this year more watchable too. Imagine how horrible this team would be without McCaffrey.

2. Play some of the young guys especially in places without a clear cut veteran presence. I'm looking at you, Terrace Marshall Jr. Or even players like Cade Mays or Brandon Smith especially as first man up with any injuries. We have to see what we have and develop them into future assets or figure out sooner that they're unlikely to be in our long term plans. It's a shame Corral is injured or this would be a great time to roll the dice with him.

3. Play aggressive as hell (basically the opposite of the Rams game). I'm talking fake punts left and right, go for every 4th and short, suicide blitzes, let it fly downfield. Probably more likely to make us lose but be way more fun to watch in the process. A win-win.

4. Keep the QB carousel going. Get Darnold on the field the moment he's healthy. It will at least add intrigue to see if he can do anything with a decent offensive line and healthy McCaffrey.

What do you say? Anything you hope to see or that would make watching our games worth your precious time on Sundays?

These are all really good points. The only thing I would like to add to this is a good general manager and a good coach. People who are smart at recognizing talent.

I don't think he's our franchaise QB, but if he has a good showing we might get something for him.

Its going to be 8 weeks into the season before we even see him.  Say he plays lights out for 3 weeks.  You envision a team trading anything for him with 2/3 of the season basically over?

Sam needs to ride the bench and never play again for us.  Its pointless.

I agree with everything other than seeing Darnold again. He's behind Baker, Eason and PJ on my chart. The story on him has already been told. We know what he is. Nothing to learn.

Agreed.

But you have to admit that if we want the #1 pick, maybe throwing this dunce out there wouldn't be the worst idea as far as that goes.   lol

    • Many Panthers fans are already excited about second-round selection Nic Scourton for a variety of reasons including but not limited to: the Panthers needed to recharge the position group, Scourton had a late first-round grade according to many (including the Panthers), and he fit this season's modus operandi of stopping the run now and forever. However, Scourton was seen early on as one of the top-3 EDGE guys in this class but fell due to not having quite the season at Texas A&M as he did prior at Purdue (his sophomore season). It's been revealed since then a few different things that speak to that dip in production... Texas A&M, for one, requires each player on their line to be able to hold two gaps. This also explains why we saw low production across the board from the other two TA&M prospects but were still being heavily touted. Scourton was also said to have bulked up to 280lbs in order to fulfill this role and noticeably suffered from it. He's expected to play this season with Carolina at 255 - 260 which is very different from most situations. In most situations, teams are wanting players to gain 15 - 30. Since Scourton is going to be playing at his Purdue weight, I thought it would make sense to dive more into that tape. Y'all... we might have gotten something special... Let's take a quick peek at the stats before we start drooling over some highlights. First, a summary of the last two seasons for Scourton: Second, the game splits: The first thing that pops up for me is how Scourton's sack numbers were cut in half his senior year. We've already pointed out issues with scheme that impacted the TA&M linemen from racking up numbers, but seeing the game splits it's clear that Scourton didn't exactly feast on inferior competition while at Purdue. He had two two-sack games (vs. Michigan (2023 - 2024 champs), Indiana) and a 10-tackle game (vs. Nebraska). I also see the 2024 games where he went up against two top-10 tackles (Will Campbell from LSU + Armand Membou from Missouri) that I watched leading up to the draft.  For those who just want a summary: Scourton looked elite at Purdue and is going to be rotating in often during his rookie campaign. I originally had him penciled in as the second-string, strong-side edge defender behind Clowney but I wouldn't be surprised to see the team have him and Pat Jones II moving around when they rotate in in order to find where Nic looks best. Here's a highlight reel to replace that Cialias you lost in your recliner tonight:   For those that like to use their own eyes: Below I'll be linking the linking the five games I've mentioned above. If you plan to watch all of them, I highly recommend going in the order listed as that will allow you to see him vs. Campbell and then Membou while dealing with the aforementioned things he dealt with at Texas A&M before seeing him look unstoppable in 2023 when he was allowed to play both at a comfortable weight and in a scheme that didn't require him two cover two gaps nearly every play. vs. Will Campbell (2024) vs. Armand Membou (2024) vs. Nebraska (2023) vs. Michigan (2023)   vs. Indiana (2023)
    • Yea, i honestly think he had almost as much say as Dan.  One of the main reasons I think that is Eager has said before he was ever with the Panthers, that you trade away picks for a qb and for any other position you do pick swaps, and that's exactly what we did.
    • For a LB that is a long career.  They take a beating.  Shoulders and head.  My favorite LB of All Time--Junior Seau--had a 20-year career--the average career for a STARTING MLB is 5.6 years.  I really think Shaq is done, but if he can play, it does not mean that he should.   Think about Morgan's career--7 seasons.  Luke's career--8 seasons.  Beason played only 93 games over 10 years--only 5 seasons where he played 15 games or more.  The other 5 seasons?  No more than 5 games per.  So basically, the average starting MLB plays 90 games in his career.  Shaq has played 123 games and was pretty injury free until the last 2 seasons (6 games total).
