Go for Carr hard and save #9 pick?

OK, so now we know one of the  reasons, perhaps the reason, why Carr and the Raiders broke up: Carr wanted to be able to audible, and McDaniels didn't want that.

As for Frank Reich's feelings, I was able to find an article back from his Philly days:

When asked about the importance of a quarterback’s ability to audible, Reich said it depends on the individual player.

“You certainly want to give a quarterback the freedom,” he said. “It’s very hard to create big plays in this league, so if you prepare a guy that he can help create big plays, put his teammates in position to make big plays, it really is advantageous to the whole team to let the guy do that.”

On an off note, I think this lends support to why Mark Davis chose McDaniels over Carr. You have to let your coach get someone who is willing and able to work within your system. Carr and McDaniels had different offensive philosophies.

Two other guys who didn't allow their quarterbacks to audible: Adam Gase, and if I remember correctly, Matt Rhule (at least for Darnold).

Doesn't really sound like a characteristic of smart coaches.

You just have to know your QB's limitations. The goal is to get one who can recognize when he's got an advantage and make the opposition pay. You gotta develop that trust.

FO likes Carr. They didn't originally plan to meet this week, they wanted to wait until after combine, but they may reach out sooner now. Rumors are that NYJ is trigger happy, although DC wants to take his time NY wants a deal done soon.

If we liked Carr we would be setting up a meeting ASAP!

You don't wait if you truly want that QB.

Tepper probably wants to develop a QB for a change. We can't keep taking castoff QB's and expecting them to be a franchise QB. I know some of you think Carr is legit but there is a reason why the Raiders got rid of him. He's not someone you can win a SB with.

Dude, don't try to talk like an insider.

By your own admission, you don't know.

Any idea on if the addition of Carr rules out a rookie QB or not? I saw one of your previous posts implied we could like Levis, and a redshirt season wouldn't be the worst thing for him. But I can't imagine Carr would have this situation at the top of his list if he thinks the team will invest highly in a rookie who they'll have to play at some point. If he plays well in NYJ/NO he could have that job for a few years.

Personally I only like Carr if the team doesn't think they can get someone at 9. We know the way to win is to attack a window when your QB is on a rookie deal. Carr is okay, but that probably won't be good enough for us to actually be serious when you consider how much he'll have to be paid.

It’s hard to say, I don’t think they have a clear plan yet, the staff is still coming through the door and getting their login credentials and work spaces. The answer to that is locked away in Scott’s brain somewhere.

But, I don’t think you put money on Carr and use a 1st round pick on a rookie. That would be more of move if you signed Tannehill or Darnold (that is only my opinion).

Weird that if we "like Carr" we've made zero known effort to reach out as of yet. Have to think that Reich already has the foundation of a plan for the position in place and gave a glimpse of that when he pitched himself to management. If that involves Carr you can't maintain radio silence for much longer.

I know Carr is better then the likes of Mayfield and Darnold but I find it really hard to believe the coaching staff and F.O. are gonna go after a veteran QB again when that's what got Reich fired in Indy and is the same thing we've been dealing with. Just seems like it would be a tough sell to the fanbase especially considering Carr isn't gonna come cheap.

I suspect that Gardner Minshew can bring similar results at a fraction of the price. Minshew's career passer rating is better than Carr's. He probably has some other advanced metrics that are better than Carr's as well.
