What a Shaq extension/restructure could look like

He is going to be restructured for this year. They might extend him and add voidable years but he said he wanted to retire after this season as a Panther and would be amenable to working things out.

I missed him saying he wanted to retire after this year. When was this?

Thanks for the link.

I can see that as two separate statements. He has “one more year” on his contract so he’ll be here next year. Then he also wishes to retire as a Panther one day.

Who knows. If he truly only wants to play one more year, that means he’ll almost certainly be cut.

I suspect they will give him an extension to spread out his cap hit with little guaranteed money with voidable years so he can play as long as he stays productive or retire without much dead cap to account for when he leaves or is cut.

Contract info pulled from Spotrac. Very possible I got some of the math wrong so tear my potential extension apart.

Key points:

-Shaq gets a two year AAV of $11,580,000 with extension/restructure. Seems fair for him.

-Panthers get $8,996,250 in cap savings next year while also keeping an important piece for our defense

Do you think Shaq is worth a contract like this or should we just cut bait now?

Nice work. I think you are in the ballpark for what Shaq would accept based on his comments about not taking a paycut.

That said, I'm not sure if his production is worth 1 yr $13M or 2 yr $23M (new money) especially given all the recent LB cuts. Also, that AAV would put him in the top 10 at LB (non-edge).

I personally feel like LB should be treated similar to RB in terms of how you fill the position; ILB gets a slight bump due to the leadership duties generally given to that position.

That man held the defense together throughout the Rhule/Snow disaster. That first season he spent most of his time trying to get people lined up in the right positions.

On any other team, he'd be a fan favorite and semi-regular pro bowler.

There's a lot more to football than sacks and INTs.

I've never thought he lived up to a first round draft pick.  He is getting older so I would move on.  Great player and teammate though.

To be fair, he's following a HoF linebacker - of course he's going to be a bit of a disappointment. Having said that, he's maybe slightly above average, but didn't warrant the contract he was given.

    • Aaron Donald's brother. He's a QB.
    • To be fair, Tyson is a well-rounded route runner, has good speed and great separation. I think of him as a taller JSN with the same wiggles and ability to play outside or in the slot. He would be a great cherry on top to our young WR corps between TMac and Coker.  He might not be a burner, but his short area quicks and ability to turn DBs around with ease is appealing.  Personally, I think it's a luxury pick and hope we go elsewhere. I think Dan and Dave do as well.  I also think DJ is one of the most respected draft analysts in the league. He has his fingers on the pulse, especially front office whispers, in addition to the draft prospects themselves. He's always been very fair to the Panthers, and IMO, covers them better than the Shultzes and Kipers of the football world. He also went to App St. Depending on how the board falls, Tyson could technically be seen as BPA at 19. Dude was and still is a top-10 selection despite a rough 2025 season at ASU. Our WR unit is not a complete room yet, so it's not that outragious if we truly are looking BPA.  Me personally, I want OT, LB, DT or FS at 19. In DJ's scenario, I'd take any of Faulk, Woods, Lomu or Allen. I personally like the Texas LB more than Allen, and think he's a better compliment to Wallace, but Allen does give me Jon Beason vibes, so wouldn't be mad there either.
