Panthers sign Adam Thielen

This is not a back pickup if the Panthers didn't overpay him on his 3 yr. contract.

Reports were : The soon to be 33 yr old Thielen has lost a step athletically, but he remains a detailed route-runner with incredible hands.

His route-running and knowledge of leverage and spacing help him excel in the red zone; his 30 touchdown catches over the past three seasons trails only Davante Adams, Mike Evans, Travis Kelce, and Tyreek Hill.

It doesn’t.. He is going to be your slot safety blanket for your rookie QB.. And a vet teacher for our very young WR room.. Think of him like Ricky Prohel..College Basketball Dancing GIF by UNC Tar Heels

Or Cotchery on that 2015 SB team. Get open, catch the ball, move the chains, repeat. Nothing fancy, just a smart, reliable guy who does his job. I love this guy.

Stop quoting the $25 million.  We are obviously not paying a 35/36 year old Thielen $9 million. This is very likely a 2 year $14 million contract effectively, with the last year thrown in for cap purposes. It's essentially a foregone conclusion that he'll be cut after 2 years. I'm guessing the last year has around an $8 million cap savings if cut, with a dead cap of only $2.5 million.

Overall a solid signing in a position of desperation. Hopefully he'll serve as a strong mentor and rub off on the young guys like TMJ and Shi Smith too.

"He will carry a cap hit of $3.3M in 2023 and $9.9M in 2024. His base salary for each season is as follows: $1.1M, $5.5M, and $4M. $11M of his deal was guaranteed at signing with an $8.3M signing bonus.

This is, however, essentially a two-year deal. The Panthers can decide to move on from Thielen after the 2024 season and it would only cost them $5 million in dead cap as opposed to $11 million if he were cut after the 2023 season. "

So, basically a 2 year $18M deal.

THIS!

Minnesota QBs since 2018: Cousins, throwing for 153 TDs, 5th best in that time, throwing to him, Diggs, and Jefferson

Carolina QBs since 2018: The Shell of Cam Newton x2, Kyle Allen, Teddy Bridgewater, Will Grier, PJ Walker, Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield, maybe others I'm forgetting: 91 TDs, 2nd worst in that time, throwing to Moore, Anderson, and endless JAGs

Somewhat of a chicken/egg argument and Thielen is a different type of player than DJ, a type that Caroina has sorely needed in years past, so this doesn't really mean much when discussing DJ Moore. I think Thielen has some left in the tank, but expectations should be tempered accordingly.

    • there is one common denominator in the 2003 & 2015 Carolina Panthers teams they both had ELITE top tier Qb play.  it would require a MVP type of season from Bryce Young to have the same type of success that Jake Delhomme had in  2003 & or Cam Newton in 2015 & lead this team to a SuperBowl is this going to happen or is there any reason to believe Bryce Young is capable of playing similar to Jake Delhomme in 2003 or Cam Newton in 2015 ? well no there is no absolutely NO reason whatsoever to believe that this is going to happen in 2026 ..just saying
    • I'd actually like to see Cherelus get a fair shot to win the job in camp. Wallace is decent in drop zone coverage, but he gets abused in the play action game and is often times out of position in the run game. It might just be me, but I swear every time I watch Wallace play, I see multiple plays a game were it looks like he's just trying to be blocked. Watching Cherelus last year he at least looked like he was trying to hit someone on every play. Wallace plays like a LB who doesn't trust what he sees and it makes him passive and cautious versus Cherelus who regardless of if his decision is right or wrong goes at it 100%.
    • Agreed.  Hasn’t happened to me either, but I feel very strongly about it.  That’s not just one of the worst things a woman could do to a man, it’s a power inherent to only women and is one of the worst things a HUMAN being can do to another.  A man can’t “hide” a pregnancy or maternity.  It’s impossible.  And that sucks for anyone that has to go through that. I always got a weird vibe off her and just found her very unlikeable.  Annoying even.  I’ve always been good at reading people and there was just something about her to me that was off-putting, somewhere under the surface.  And here we are…  she is despicable.
