The problem with Newton is that he didn't develop as a player.

Richardson did not.  The fact that he didn't elevate a UF team that leaves plenty to be desired I think validates some of the questions about the raw aspect to his talent, and for me, it plays similar to Trey Lance coming out where the raw intangibles and talent were very attractive but that it's unrealized to this point makes your point about him being a great value at 9, but too much of a gamble after trading up to 1.

What you'll hear from analysts (and it's generally true) is that when you have someone like Newton or Jackson, you basically have to build the offense around their skill set. That's what the Panthers did early on.

Norv Turner switched it up and had him running a Coryell type offense, and it worked. But he was already well into his career by the time that change was made. I'll always wonder what could have been if someone like Turner had been around early on.

You'd likely have to do that with Richardson as well if you wanted him to start this early. More likely you're taking a couple of years to try and coach him up, so you don't get any immediate returns.

Stroud or Young you could much more easily slide into a WCO or E-P type system because they've already got the skills needed.

Pretty much.

Instead of trying to teach him to play in a pro-style system, t hey built a college style offense around him. It's possible the idea was to slowly transition him into a more traditional offense, but they just decided what they had was good enough and stuck with it.

Turner showed them that they could have worked with him on that, although maybe it would have meant him starting a little later instead of day one.

That's a trade off I'd take for a longer, more successful career.

i've seen him do that a few times. mostly he does grip the laces, but i noticed that a little at the combine.

      Im not firm on many things football, but this statement or belief or strategy I am 100% for. Full Offseason the goal is to make the playoffs. Week 1, 1000% I want to win. Weeks 2-10,  1000% I want to win. Until the math stats 0.000000000% chance at NO playoffs, I want to win. *Once* there's no chance at the playoffs, I want to 100% lose every game until the end. You are still loser at 2-15 or 5-12, I want to never lose like this again. I want the best value for losing and suffering. Again the only goal is playoffs. Once in the playoffs anything can happen, I want to win the whole dam show. If you happen to lose in the first round, that's perfectly fine and lets work hard this upcoming off-season to get another chance to make them.  This is the ONLY way to play in the NFL. Anyone not understanding this method of strategy, please call your doctor for a visit...

      Purdy's good but at the end of the day you're paying first class money for a business class seat.  It's a big problem with the salary cap.  QBs take most of it whether they are Pat Mahomes or not.

      Purdy saved the 49ers from that three 1st picks for Trey Lance. People forget that. People also forget he should have MVP votes for the 23 season. He's been any where from the 8th(his best/23) to 14th ranked QB, he's legit and guys around top 10 get paid as QBs.....guys in 28th get paid too, he's 4x the QB Trevor Lawrence is and better than BY by miles as well...even without CMC, Samuel(whos a RB playing WE), and half the OL.    *BUT*    You non-believers missed this ultra important mistake that honestly made me reconsider all the praise I gave him. https://www.si.com/nfl/49ers/news/49ers-qb-brock-purdy-throws-blind-40-percent   That's is damming to my case and reset my thinking of his.
