PETER KING: Bryce Young is head and shoulders in the lead to be #1 pick

Dan Graziano, NFL Insider: The Panthers would have you believe they moved up from No. 9 to No. 1 in the draft without knowing which quarterback they're taking. As you'd expect, some people don't believe that, and a very unscientific poll of sources to whom I spoke at the 2023 NFL annual meeting tells me most people believe they know who they are taking.

But Panthers coach Frank Reich was adamant Tuesday that they're going through their process and considering each of the top four quarterback prospects equally.

possible but his comment about being hurt is telling and I bet he wishes he could have that back

He curbed it enough with successful comps. Reich and Fitt seem to be guys who aren't nervous to tell us how they actually feel about prospects which is interesting.

Newton: Levis and Richardson still are being evaluated, so they're still technically in the running, but according to sources with knowledge of the search, the Panthers' choice is between Stroud and Young.

The biggest difference between the two is size, which took up a considerable amount of coach Frank Reich's time at Tuesday's annual media breakfast at the owners meetings.

Young is 5-foot-10 and 204 pounds. Stroud is 6-3, 214.

Reich made it clearer than he has at any point during the process that this is more about durability than height, and that durability is a concern with Young due to his stature, though he missed only one game at Alabama.

If they already did decide on Bryce before Reich got here, that is indeed Not a good thing on surface. A big reason Reich is here is because he is a Offensive coach and a QB guru, you dont decide on something like this without his consideration. I dont know why this would be so hard for some to understand.

I just assume that would have come up in the interview, at least the idea of trading up and a general overview on the prospects. Dont think they'd hire someone who didn't like the idea of drafting the guy we wanted if we were super dead set on it.

That’s what I was saying earlier. Why would they say that with an interim coach and probably knowing we’d have a completely different staff in the building next year. Maybe they hired Reich with him being ok with this happening?

Mike Tannenbaum, NFL front office insider: After trading up to No. 1, I'd be going all-in on Young. It was a tough call for me, and I just narrowly picked him over Stroud. But while Young's 5-foot-10, 204-pound size is a concern, his talent is unquestionable. He's the guy I'd lean on to turn the passing game around in Carolina.

Todd McShay, NFL draft analyst: .

I've heard some buzz that Carolina likes Young at No. 1, but like I said Wednesday, the Panthers are going to put out a lot of smokescreens to keep the competition off the scent. And frankly, they are likely far from a final decision on who they want with the top draft pick. I know this: Carolina is blessed to have a really tough decision on its hands, because there are some really good quarterbacks atop this class.

This also says that Young is the favorite ahead of Stroud.

it seems like the big issue is Young's lack of bigness, but in every other facet it seems that Young is the better prospect and so the decision is whether or not Youngs many other boxes that he checks outweighs his lack of weight. it's looking like they are starting to come to the conclusion that he's big enough for the job.

i've said for weeks, people in both camps need to get used to the idea that the guy they would rather not have will be the guy that we draft. find peace now. it's for your own good.

I’m sure the FO with generations of scouting, playing, and coaching experience will take your concerns into consideration

don't you know we're voting on it, which is why it is so important to convince everyone else that they are idiots if they don't agree and vote with me!!!!!!!!

    • The defense is 28 out of 32 in salary cap allocation for 2025. We have a ton of resources tied up in the offense including the highest paid OL in the league multiple 1st round WR's and multiple recent draft picks across the offense at TE and RB and we have two 1000 yard backs. Bryce and company couldn't get past Tyler Shough and his crew in 2 games. That's all there is to it. You can spin it and put the entire onus on the defense to your heart's desire it doesn't change the fact that this is an OFFENSIVE team now. If you want to argue that we should revert back to a defensive identity as we have been in the past which has brought us success then I will agree with you on that. But as it stands the onus is on the offense because that is where we have invested through the nose. Dave Canales and Bryce Young need to do a hell of a lot better than they have against the rebuilding Saints who without us should only have 2 wins this season.
    • Bryce is not trending up. He is the same QB he has always been. Bottom of the league in most categories.  If Canales thinks he can build a contender with Bryce then he is a bigger idiot then I thought.  Offense next year will have the same issues and be just as inconsistent as it was this year.  We have seen Bryce’a ceiling and it is 175 yards a game and that is not a QB you keep around as your starter. That is barely a backup.
    • Looks like Darnold should have had at least 3 picks. That'll get ugly in the playoffs eventually. Can't deny his physical talent though. You either have that or you don't. Mike Macdonald is a legit coach.
