Potential $1.2B Panthers stadium renovation discussion

since the renovations are in the 1.2 billion range... I would not be surprised... or at least that new 3/4 roof concept that we are seeing across all sports stadium concepts.

However, I'd love for Tepper to roll out this concept:

This would allow real grass for both soccer and football. Then also allow concerts and events at the stadium without sacrificing the field.  This is getting really popular at the international soccer level, and I believe the Raiders do this with their new field.

I think Allegiant Stadium is less elaborate, and more like Phoenix.  As I understand it, the grass field is on a try like Phoenix that rolls in and out.  The difference is Allegiant has an artificial turf field on the foundation that the grass field tray sits above when it is rolled in, whereas Phoenix is just the concrete foundation.  I guess the tray for the field in Allegiant has enough support to not sit directly on the artificial turf when it is rolled in.

From what I read, UNLV uses the artificial turf field.  I don't know if that was by choice or the Raidahs don't want the additional wear on their grass field.

Agreed but I’ll bet half that money goes towards the practice facility.

If they’re going to spend “real money” on a remodel it needs to be a dome.

Does the public/local gov't get any ROI when the public funds part of it? Any returns from the gate/concessions/ownership revenue that is collected over the years since the locals are footing part of the bill?

Seems rather "scammy" if the public funds part of it, yet the owners/shareholders reap the profits without reallocating it back to the folks that helped build it.

Public funding and billionaires go hand in hang like toothpaste and a toothbrush.

I hope it gets down

Last thing I want is for Charlotte to turn into the new Oakland (in terms of professional sports teams)

I don't. Socializing the costs so the billionaires can reap all the profits is one of the dumbest things this country does repeatedly no matter the industry and it never works for the public like the billionaires claim it will.

but welcome to the united states

you don’t have to like it but it’s reality.

billionaires want public funding, if you’re sooo upset about it, I suggest you write your local legislator.  If not than, than your complaints are like used toilet paper… completely useless

Thanks for the correction guys.

That said, the state using tax dollars to fund a single man's business renovation while he pockets all the profits is even worse. That poo ain't right no matter which way you look at it. Taking it a step further, should the state, city, and/or county use tax money to pay for renovations at every restaurant, hotel, and store that tourists visit too?

In theory the restaurant, hotel, and stores are benefitting by the tourist visits. That’s how these projects get sold, the total economic impact to the area. I do not disagree about the owner should pay more since his business is appreciating.

WOW!  That's an amazing concept.  Big props for sharing that.  I used to work in commercial construction back before the great recession, and I could only imagine what it would take to build something like that.  No way that could be done in one offseason.  The team would either have to relocate or build the stadium first.

If I were in the local government, I'd push for a dollar for dollar match.  If Tepper wants to get $1.2 Billion from taxpayers, he needs to match with his own $1.2 Billion.  I could only imagine the potential for a new site at the Charlotte Pipe area off Graham St.  The Panthers have had their eye on that land for a while.  When that company got all the tax breaks and incentives to move to Oakboro our friends on Mint Street were very accommodating to the process.  Maybe a new site could even include some easily accessible parking lots for a better tailgating experience. The only thing I hated about the construction of the new baseball field in Charlotte was it was built over the best area for tailgating.

the country worships and serves the rich and grovels for crumbs from the table....and we should be grateful when some of the crumbs trickle down to us. but if they don't...serves us right for not being as awesome and rich as the billionaire gods.

He's perfectly fine with giving the billionaires what they want as long as he gets his crumbs and football. Yeah, there will always be the wealthy people, but they should have to pay for their business expenses instead of the rest of the people paying for it. Public funding of private businesses should have never become a thing.

Use those public funds to actually help those in need rather than stuff cash into the pockets of CEOs and hope they find a way to somehow benefit the people below them. cut out the middleman.

and complaining to congress people...within a short amount of time of getting into office, they are all groomed to start calling donors. they are essentially telemarketers going around asking for donations. that's what leadership of both parties do to incoming freshman...they enforce the practice of spending hours a day fundraising. the very rich know this and they know they can get what they want because people at every level of government sit around their table with their mouths wide open saying "please feed me, sir!"

and regular citizens are groomed to tell each other that we are lucky to have such billionaires because without them we'd all be starving and directionless. we need them for society to function so we give them whatever they want when they want. more than that, they teach being grateful to the billionaire gods.
