This guy was not good- or prepared--

My top 4 with the best chance to make the roster based on weaknesses in the roster:

CB Wright, Oregon State:  Wright has elite ability as a zone CB.  I think he has the best chance of making the roster based on my low opinion of Taylor and Henderson.  In fact, I think his chances are probably 50% or higher.  Mark my words.  Write that down.  Remember what was stated here.....

OG Nash Jensen, ND State: Corbett will be out, and I firmly believe that they want competition at LG--they have not found a swing T, so I think they prefer Brady Christensen in that role.  I think it is possible that the McCray signing is depth until Corbett returns--so they have Zavala to groom at LG.  I think BC could play LG for a while in 2023, but the plan is to move him beside Ekwonu and play BC as the swing T.  That leaves Mays as the backup C, RG depth, future RG when Corbett leaves.  It makes too much sense....If so Jensen could be added to the roster as G depth.  Remember, they offered Jensen a pretty large free agent contract to get him here.  I guesstimate his chances of making the roster are around 33%.

DE Redmond, Okahoma: While the DE room looks crowded, Redmon has the ability to unseat a player or two. First, look at the NTs:  Roy (NT) is hardly locked into a spot, and the other 2 NTs are hardly proven.  I have Penisisi as the starter and McCall was undrafted last year.  If either of these players (including Roy) falter, it could necessitate moving Tuttle and or Brown into the NT spot on passing downs.  That could leave a DE depth spot open, and Redmond seems to be highly qualified for that position.  Chance of making the roster?  About 25-30%

OLB Leota, Auburn: Currently, we have literally nothing proven at Strong OLB/Edge.  YGM and rookie Johnson.  While we need a strong OLB on early (running) downs, the Panthers are certain to carry 2 of these players.  Johnson is raw but safe, and YGM is a question mark---could the Panthers shop him?  Stay turned, but the like Leota--had him for a private visit and he was the fastest player (based on the lists being formed after the draft) to sign with the Panthers as an UDFA.  Chance of making the roster?  About 15%.

Others with a legit shot:

  • Peoples, RB  (When healthy, pretty good.  Going to the PS.  Some say, "We need a big back though!"  I say, We have backs that weight 220 and 210 on the roster--
  • Pool, LB  (Special teamer and classic overachiever--probably going to PS, but if a player like Grugier-Hill faulters, Pool would be a nice fill in)
  • Vann, WR/KR  (Special teams could get him a job--gonna be a Cock fight for the #6 WR job--as 3 ex-Gamecocks go for 1 roster spot)
  • Bolden (would have to beat out Franklin, but he could do it)

Thanks. Great summary and evaluation.

I like this vid because you also get to see Bryce. IMO Leota is too slow to be anything more than a 2 down ILB who can blitz but if you skip to 5:51 and let it run it's just soooooo nice to watch them duel and the touchdown pass to tie the game is Stick Around Bob Ross GIF by Originals

    • They've gone way overboard with the masking of plays by only filming the ball in air.  Nobody is analyzing camp highlights.
    • Canales up first. Guys got their legs back yesterday and started a little slow when they came out Bryce challenged them in the huddle and they responded "Dominant practice for the defense today." Praised turnovers, "beautiful hits," and being physical Praised Moehrig, Ransom, Incoom, and Jones II Confirmed playing starters. Predominantly a young team and can't pass up an opportunity. Emphasized game day routines such as nutrition, body readiness, etc. Plus it's a bunch of new guys on the defense. Bryce will start. Will play them the first two, but starters might sit for the third game depending on how practice goes that week. Nic Scourton has a mild hamstring that happened in special teams. DJ Johnson had an issue with his hip flare up and is getting checked out this afternoon. Experimenting with approach to preseason games. In Seattle they played their starters in all but the last preseason game and what Pete Carroll was looking for in terms of mental readiness to play football. Thomas Incoom has been getting a lot of work with AC Carter adding to his toolbelt. Getting better as a rusher and being physical in the run game. Looking for a consistency in response. 1pt for a win, 3pts for a TD. Defense doesn't like that, but in games if they give up one go ball the score can swing. They challenged the pass game and the run game today. Guys are getting together before, between, and after team drills to challenge each other Job of the coaching staff to set the foundation for our schemes, philosophy, and expectations of what it's like to play Panthers football. Powerful when players take that and the locker room owns it. That's when it becomes our team, their team. At the end of the day, the men on the field have to rebound from a bad play, celebrate the good plays, and keep each other in tune for a whole game. Robert Hunt is amazing. Size, talent, quickness, flexibility. Really intelligent guy that there will say himself there are technique things he needs to work on. Regardless of where players are at, there's a constant learning curve and loves that Big Rob is challenging himself with the position coach. Thinks the digital down and distance can be really valuable. Getting the information quickly will help with the flow of the game. Thought TMac looked great but there were some near misses that he'll have to get in the room and communicate with Bryce on while reviewing film. James Mitchell keeps doing right and his trust factor is increasing with the QBs. If you're right and the coverage says the ball goes there, it'll come. Had some issues at the start of camp but is trending up. Newton or Person: "It looked like today was beyond thud but short of live. What do you call that?" Canales: "No, that's thud. In my mind, that's what thud should look like. The challenge for our defensive guys is can you put your body in a position where we know that would've been a tackle." Whizzing by, tagging with two hands, etc doesn't show you whether you would've made a tackle. That's not real football. Let's the play extend because guys have to be ready to chase sometime where the ball squirts out from a pit. Can't train to say "Ah, it was a tackle" and relax but instead play with intensity through the whistle. Lathan Ransom is bringing the physical style of play that they saw on film. Has been really into the details and someone that they can count on. Has really given himself a chance to start at the other safety position. Excited for the extra energy from a game-like environment that they'll get from FanFest. Used to have four preseason games and now FanFest feels like that first one. Will give ST full speed reps to evaluate. Making plays and feeding off of the fans. Window closed quickly on the INT to finish practice. CSW baited Bryce with some movement and made a great play. Saw it from Bryce's perspective with TMac coming open. Has played all over the secondary that they can count on to speak loudly and be on the same page with his teammates.
