2023 Charlotte Hornets Summer League

Miller and Wemby played quite a lot head to head tonight. I liked the defense and offense for B-Mil against a 7’3 dude.  One play Miller did a double crossover on Wemby, broke his ankles and Wemby fell to the floor for an easy 2.

And that poster dunk from Kai on Wemby was legit.

Miller: 16 pts/ 11 rbs / 5-15 shooting

Wemby: 9pts / 8 rbs / 2-13 shooting

Both looked like they need work but the upside is there for both 19 year olds.  I like our young guy.

Bouknight not so much.

Bouknight is a waste and Nick Smith has to learn to pass and slow down a bit. Nnaji looks like a good project big man for us.

wtf Bouk doing? Just finding some clips, missed the live game

Bouk is playing for his career.  Going all-out to desperately make a splash.

And can’t make a shot.

Third year lottery pick struggling in summer league against rooks?  I doubt he’s a Hornet this year.

Now Kai Jones?  Whole different story.  He’s shining and will impact this year.

We definitely have some talent on this roster.

By far Millers best game so far on both ends. I think someone must have tried to light a fire under him as he was noticably more assertive. Alot of missed shots but still a lot better than first two games.

As for Wemby, he's going to need to bulk up and condition himself. I thought after his initial 6 minutes in the 1st he looked gassed.

Both these guys might need 2-3 years on the offensive end before their potential is realized.

I would look at Scoot ROY odds for some value if you have some fun money.

Here are the highlights.  Announcers obviously hyped Wemby up early-on but Miller more than held his own, probably won the head to head. His D was pretty nice on the 7-3 dude. Wemby got some highlight blocks.

Highlights

5:47 is where the Spurs GM is on camera gushing over Wemby.  And then Kai Jones absolutely posterizes Wemby while the GM’s talking lol.

And then right after that, Brandon Miller gets a steal and a nasty fast-break tomahawk in traffic.

Wemby actually made a 4-point play tonight (highly questionable foul call against Kai IMO), and finished with 9 total points for the game.  5 points outside of that one play.  And he played big/key minutes.

Generational talent until the next one next year.

I like the kid’s upside, but even Zion dominated instantly.

To be fair I think Zion's skillset translated a lot easier/quicker to the NBA game versus Wemby. Zion was a man among boys and frankly still is near the basket.

It's going to take some time for Wemby to learn how to manipulate the game using his size and handles. He will flash moments of brilliance this year, but ultimately needs to get stronger. He's also with a franchise that understand talent development. If he was a Hornet his ceiling would be Bol Bol.

The problem with Wemby is he can't bulk up or he highly increases the chance of season-ending injuries. 7'3" frame can't support being bulky.  He has great passing and Iso plays but I think he will get bullied under the rim in the NBA.

He got bullied under the rim by Brandon Miller who people on here say is too small right now lmao

He looked like a 12 year old boy standing next to Nnaji, who by the way is no way in hell this dude is 18

I don't think he could put on enough to cause concern even if he wanted to. He's built more like KD and Bol than Giannis and Steph.

Overall, that was some of the worst basketball I’ve ever seen. Besides 3 players (Miller, Jones, Bailey) the rest were throwing bricks and dribble driving like the And 1 mixtape tour.

were we being coached by John Calipari? I was confused as to what we were doing on both ends of the court.

    • Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.   1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.  GRADE: C -    2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL GRADE: F   3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career. GRADE: F 4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick GRADE: C+   5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.  GRADE: F OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F
    • You gonna make me post Stank before every game?  I kid, I kid.
