Brayton says he'd be heartbroken if Panthers don't re-sign him next year

he's actually not a fit for the 3-4. If anything he did in Oakland or the time he wasted there was any indication. They had him at 3-4 DE, didn't work. They even put him, at 275, at OLB. Didn't work. Who saw that coming. The prototypical 4-3 DE works best at 4-3 DE. Who knew...Oakland wasted years of this guy's career trying to fit him in a square hole.

I like Brayton. I'm surprised Johnson didn't beat him, but both of them are fantastic ends who get a lot of pressure but are missing that hair of a second faster jump that make elite ends the elite ends. If we had to start Johnson and Brayton, I'd be OK with that.

Truth is, people want to bash the crap out of Marty Hurney, but he manufactured a 12-4 season out of one trade, one pick, and picking up guys on the super-cheap like Brayton and Muhammad that made a huge difference.

Actually I think he would be decent as a 3-4 DE. Alot of the time last year he played in more of a 2 gap scheme with Kemo shading toward the center. He can also play inside on passing downs similar to a DT in our 4-3 taking on double teams which is similar to a DE in a 3-4. I like him as a DE in a 4-3 best, but he could play a 3-4 scheme better than the majority of our other DEs outside of Peppers. He would have to put on 10-20 lbs of muscle but he has the body type to do that if speed were not as much an issue as it is in Meek's scheme.

brayton is pretty decent and i think the organization should keep him......but for you to say he plays better run d than pep is crazy. i remember him losing containment too many times this year.

Yeah, the containment thing is a problem. I don't care how much you love the game or how hard you try, you still need to play sound defense. I've seen him crash inside quite a few times and the RB just went right by him for a big gain. I like the guy too, but he's not even close to being better than Peppers against the run.

Actually Brayton is much better against the run than Peppers. Guess who has more tackles? Yeah Brayton and he shares time with Johnson. Peppers never holds the edge and always goes wide outside or crashes inside. Peppers makes his tackles coming from the other side or running after the runner and getting him from behind. Meeks scheme is weak on the edges and the DE play has been poor across the board against the run. But Peppers never stays at home which is the first rule of playing DE, hold the edge and turn everything inside.

Brayton is the man, and he should be here next season and the years after to come. The guy came from the worst football organization and got a second chance on a real team and produced well for us. Yes we have some great talent behind him in Brown and Johnson but Brayton is a great all around defensive player.

After reading that quote I have gained a newfound respect for him...and he even says he really wants to be here...AND he plays balls out!?!? Ummm am I missing something?

I liked that quote too. Buuuuuut I wouldn't mind if he had a brief non-Christian moment and cracked Jerramy Stevens in the nuts again.

And yes, absolutely we should keep him. Funny how many posts when he first got here knocked him as a Raiders castoff.

    • Also, the fact we are comparing this one to the 10 preseason tells me we are in for another horrible year.
    • Well, they're both in the same league (if you will). During preseason, Fitz went 3/3 & Sauls went 5/6, but of course Sauls was 4/4 last night (including one 50+). Both were Lou Groza Award finalists. I believe Fitz made two 55+ yarders last season, while Sauls led the nation with three. Fitz was 13/13 (💯) while Sauls was 21/24 (87.5). Fitz was a 3rd-Team AP All-American, while Sauls was a PFF All-American.  Career-wise, Fitz was 58/74 (78.4), while Sauls was 52/64 (81.3). I wish that I could see the attempts and knew the depth of yardage. I wish that we could compare practice kicks during their training camps, but we can't. Maybe someone with a PFF/CFF account can give that Basically it's just a matter of belief I guess. Seeing dude knock down four FGs and go perfect during a pressure-filled game for him is damned impressive if you ask me. I don't believe that Fitzgerald could do that.  That being said, I'd have to know more. I will say that it may be worth mentioning that we seem to like PFF this year and Sauls being a PFF All-American may be notable. Now that being said, the Panthers may not be even considering Sauls.
    • Ive said it 1000x times on here.  Our 2025 season will be dictated by the first 4 games.  poo the bed there and lose all confidence and momentum, we win 5 games maybe.  Go 2-2, 3-1 we got a look at 7/8 wins
