I retract my last post… explains a lot.. I’m becoming more intrigued of what BY might be able to accomplish with proper blocking… not holding my breath tho..

yeah, if he has that extra 1-1.5s ... Thomas's route should keep the Corner down, and give Thielen a free run to the back corner.

It's not the first read is the problem. The play is designed to go TMJ>THOMAS>THIELEN/CHARK

It's a flood concept to pull the zone away from the middle of the field. Thomas and Chark are running the man beaters. If Chuba is able to stay on the strong side and block Smith.. that ball is either going back of the endzone to Thielen or middle to Chark

Yes but Bryce has to realize that route to Theilen is going to take ages to develop. It MIGHT be there but he’ll never get that kind of time. That really should’ve been a super fast read across the board and a quick dump off to Chark

It's not ages though... it's literaly .5s-1s. That video is at 80% speed... All that needs to happen is Bryce not have a player tacklng him when he gets to his 2nd read

Both Young and Chuba are at fault. Chuba shouldve blocked right, but even then, if Bryce steps up into the pocket he couldve make a quick throw. Ive seen Cam do that many times over.

why would he step up in the pocket? If Chuba makes that block there is no need to step up... you step up if your guards create lanes... you dont just step up to step... especially in the red zone

Hes in the shotgun with WRs going across. Why would he continue dropping back?

I have the game DVR'd and I re-watched the play at full speed.  His footwork is absolutely too slow and it does appear to be there even at 100% speed.  The ball does need to come out quick, but he's got to get his feet set quicker overall.  Color commentator says "Bryce young has to get rid of this" on the replay.

he stopped dropping back. I am just stating there is no reason for him to step up in that moment. By the time he could step up if there were reason to, he has harrison smith in his face.

    • I agree. I’d make the move because I don’t see us sniffing the playoffs and let’s be honest TMac, Legette and Coker better be our top 3 future. If they aren’t and we need Thielen to replace one of them, then we need to draft yet another 1st round WR, SMH. Suffice it to say, Thielen isn’t good enough to get us into the playoffs so let’s get the young guys starting so we know if they aren’t good enough. We still have so many assumptions about whether players are who we need them to be that holding onto Thielen for 3-7 wins isn’t worth passing on a mid round pick (3rd to 5th/swaps). We’ve had some success with later round picks/UDFAs and need depth.
    • If you move Thielen I think you almost have to keep Renfrow. You need some sort of veteran presence in the locker room and Renfrow would be good insurance in the slot. I'm sure we have Coker penciled in to start there but you also have to be keeping Coker in the back of your head as XL insurance on the outside if he doesn't step up. If he flounders again, I wouldn't wait too awfully long to replace him with Coker outside and slide Renfrow into the slot and keep it moving.
    • Playing the same role is different than having the same style.  Cam Newton and Drew Brees both played QB but arent the same type in any way.
