More Fox speculation from nfl.com...Browns possible

On the Sirius Blitz today...they said that Gruden is the man that Holmgren wants....but Guden is not coming back this year. They wondered of he might hold on to Mangini for another year, waiting on Gruden....but doubtful the two (Mangini and Holmgren) could co-exist for that long.

Also....Holmgren is prolly picking the coordinators.

How do we know we are guaranteed to make the playoffs next season?

I know, yet another year of playing a soft schedule and everyone jumping on his band wagon just so we can go 7-9 or 8-8 the year after...we are in a viscous cycle here!

You sort of answered that question yourself (and it was just a joke, by the way ;) ).

I neither want nor believe that would happen but when did they stop it?

Actually doing some research on this now. Herm edwards was traded from the Jets to the Chiefs for a 4th rounder in 2006. Also read the rule was never really for head coaches or GM's. But for Assistants and lower level execs.

Still researching.

The Chiefs gave the Jets a 4th round pick for Edwards in 2006, no?

You are right the Jets did give the Chiefs a 4th round pick which they used to pick Leon Washington. The confusing part is that the trade for a coach was disallowed after Gruden was traded but showed up again with Edwards. I don't know if that was an exception to the rule, set a new precedence, or something else. I have tried to look into it further but haven't gotten a clear answer. Maybe someone else knows.

I'm kind of surprised that more people don't think Fox could be intrigued by the Cleveland position (were it to become available). He'd be set up pretty well with Holmgren running things up there and he could see the "rebuild" as enticing. Whenever someone is shouting their praises of Fox, it always starts with how he took a 1-15 team to the Super Bowl after two years... maybe he's banking on that reputation and thinks he can do it again.

The only thing I seen was the rule was clarified when the Edwards trade happened saying it only effected assitants and lower lever execs. Cant link it because the link was broke.

I agree, he could do as well there as here. It's not like they are used to winning. The playoffs every other year would be a very welcome change. At least for a while.

I don't see him going anywhere. He's a really good coach. If history is any proof we are due for a very good year. We do well one year then we have injuries the next. Seems to be a natural phenomenon.

The whole uncapped year uncertainty is what is keeping Fox from getting his well deserved extension from the Panthers.

We have the inner workings of a Super Bowl team, why change anything now. Lets get a ring first and then let the natural dismantling begin.

We thought that in 2007 too.

You all can say what you want but Fox would be perfect fit in Cleveland. A blue collar town for a blue collar coach. Sure he could have been called Mediocre but of the 3 coaches we have had for this team he is BY FAR the best we ever had.

If he leaves we are taking a gamble. We could get a guy in here that doesn't mesh with our players. We might get some young guy that is over his head. Or worse we could get a chance to get Cowher or some other retread and they cannot work the magic they did where they came from.

IMO we should keep Fox.

Go Panthers

    • I'm really not stressing about upgrading from Bryce. I'm frustrated with our inability (or refusal) to recognize overall bad QB performance and failure to seriously address the issue. QB is the most impactful position on the field, and we're not only settling for what we've been given to this point, but we've rewarded it with a fully guaranteed 5th year extension for a player that's never played 2 NFL franchise QB quality games back to back in 3 seasons. I can't understand how that's ok from a coach's or GM's viewpoint. Successful franchises don't do things like this. It just doesn't make sense.  We do not have a top half of the league QB right now. Since we don't have that player, we should be looking for him. Pickett isn't it. Grier isn't it. Bryce hasn't proven he is yet. Until you have that sure fire franchise QB, you keep looking. You're not consistently making the playoffs, a deep run, or a SB appearance without one.  What's the worst that could happen? We end up with 2 potential number 1 QBs? How horrible.
    • Easy to understand Pickett, if this is anywhere close to on point. Canales wants to get as close to Bryce as he can- get the pace and timing in the throws as close a he can to Bryce. So the other players don’t have to adjust so much, to a new guy.       If Cam was the 1, he would look for a rocket arm.  But Bryce is the 1. Look for limited in the same way.  Low velocity, plenty of air under it, feels just like home when Picket comes in. And you have the guys on the second team not having such a radical adjustment (if they have to play) like with Dalton to Bryce.    Enter Grier. I guess we will collect those types.
    • Best part is if we draft him, we can also use him as our fourth and one QB sneaker
