Both Sutton and Goodson have had flashes, but I'm not ready to turn the offense over to them yet.

So are you ready to shell out a contract to Williams when he is 29 for 5 more years and 50 million? I'm not...

Thats John Foxish and Marty Huneyesque

i wonder if the chargers wish they traded LT after 07 or atleast 08. or if the chiefs wish they traded LJ after 07. running backs come and go, yes there are a few that play for 10+ years at a high level, but they are few and far between. no one thought LT and LJ would drop of the face of the earth like they did. same with jacobs this year. if you can get a top 10 or even top 5 to improve an area of need i would be intrested.

that said its not happening with the current FO in place.

the pats just did the same thing with seymour as they needed they knew they couldnt keep 2 giants at DT/DE in wilfork and seymour. soon we are going to be faced with paying williams a ton of money, and stewie wont be far behind. stewie could easily go boldin on us if we pay williams and not him. he just ran for 1100+ yards while being the backup for most of the year. idk, but something tells me he will want equal or close to equal pay. we had this happen before and got the shaft. remember when we had to deal with witherspoon and morgan at the same time? niether are on the level of stewie or williams in terms of value to us, or value in a trade. yet we lost one with no return.

looking at the playoff teams left, how many elite RBs are left? peterson and...... peterson had a great defense and favre to help out. johnson is sitting at home, so are our 2. ray rice (who is great) was a mid level draft pick and over took for willis just this year. the cards have beenie wells who improved but is he close to either of our rbs? the colts live and die with manning and have 2 solid backs. the saints had a good rushing attack with mostly after thoughts as the primary rushers (bush is a nice pet as a reciever and occational runner). the jets used 2 backs in green and jones, but either close to williams or stewie (plus the #1 d helps)? sd lived on rivers, not LT (the short yardage specialist). dallas has 3 solid backs, any close to ours, nope.

get the picture. we could have the best 2 backs and it doesnt help to keep them all if we cant improve the entire team. we have issues (and hense why we are not in the playoffs), and they extended far beyond just jake. we were getting gashed on the ground the majority of the year, special teams sucked out loud, and the passing game was better, but still have issues at TE (as a passing threat) and WR. interior DL was horrible. if we can use 1 to strengthen the entire team why not? we arnt using them both at the same time still.

Yes, I am an idiot.

However, you can't pay upcoming contracts for both backs.

So when DeAngelo hits FA, you have two choices:

Let him walk for no compensation.

Pay him, realizing that when Stewart becomes a FA, he will walk without compensation.

Or, if you can find someone to pony up a 1st rounder for either player (preferably DeAngelo), take the pick and draft another RB, get cheap service out of that RB for a few years and keep your salary cap in tact.

Even an idiot can understand this.

I believe we can another contract out of both players.

My email to Peter King:

Dear Pete,

Your knowledge and perspective regarding the halfback posistion in American football is unfortunately outdated and irrelevant at least so far as the dual back system is concerned. Don't worry, you aren't the only one. Many Carolina fans, who have been paying much closer attention to the rushing system this team has developed over the last two years than you have ever pretended to, still don't get it and cling to the idea of the "workhorse" player. Perhaps if you paid a little more attention to this small market team then this unfortunate display of ignorance would never have made the light of day in a massively popular weekly article for all the world to see. As it stands, as entertaining and humorous as this suggestion continues to be, it scares me that someone of importance to the team might start listening or worse yet, that one of our star backs will listen to it and convince themselves that they would be better off in a solo act than as a duet.

With regards,

Ned

Hey genius, I meant what other team is gonna trade two high picks for an RB in this day and age... I forgot I have to be very specific with you.

Or you can say this.... "Blah snarf blah circle jerk wahhhhh blah snarf snarf tears", he understand that.

I understand where everyone is coming from with the age of DWill and all but the way Stewie runs he won't last much longer then Williams will. Stewie has showed everyone these last past games that he can run his ass off but thats with a passing attack. DWill put up majority of his numbers when the Panthers had no passing game at all and opposing Defenses only had to worry about was us running the ball.

I would be tempted since we're a run-first offense and Williams is a special talent.

On top of that, there are lots of ways to structure a contract, the Panthers have a good revenue stream and we'll probably never see a salary cap again.

Thats not necessarily true Anybody that payed attention knew Larry Johnson was going to be run into the ground and he was. He hasn't been the same since that 416 attempt year. The chargers didn't exactly use LT sparingly either.

As far as age, like a wise man once said "it's not the age, it's the milage."

I think Williams can be well productive past 30.

maybe.....but the smart move says he won't be. 30 is the magic age for RBs in general to go downhill fast.

    • with arm strength people often get stuck on the distance  arm strength in the NFL is moreso measured in speed / velocity .which of course is how long does it take for  the ball to travel from the time of release until it reaches its target ? & u beat world class speed with more speed on the ball...just saying
    • No GM hits 100%. I'm well aware. But what a GM has to do is look at the roster, what's available, and future contracts and go from there. XL was a one season wonder in college. He has speed. Who cares. He body catches and his hands are bricks. Speed doesn't matter when you don't actually have the ball. There were other receivers available with better resumes. XL was a project. Fitts loved projects. You don't have the luxury of projects when you just traded away DJ for a QB. 1st round WRs need to contribute now.  Brooks was a luxury RB pick we didn't have the luxury to make. Who cares if Dallas was going to pick him. We had holes all over our defense. Chuba was coming off a fresh contract. We just inked 150m interior line and then centered it by moving a guard to center that had suffered 2 season ending injuries. The most critical area on our line was being held together by a bandaid and a prayer. No surprise when it didn't work.   Wallace is getting better but Wilson was sitting there waiting to be taken. DPOY for college football right there for the taking. That was a gimme pick. If you're going to take a risk on an injured player, the 3rd round for Wilson made a whole lot more sense at a position we were rest stop TP thin at.  4th round and on aren't going to be heavy contributors unless you're lucky.  He did well on the trade for Jackson. Coker, I believe he offered the largest guarantee. He actually got more than some late round picks make.  Those 1st 3 picks, IMO, were straight up whiffs.  Looking back at Fitterer's picks, I think he tried to plug holes because we had a ton of them. Problem was, he wasn't very good at it and he loved RAS scores and developmental players with a coach that couldn't develop a Polaroid. He tried to do too much. He was impatient. His other problem was he panicked during the draft and couldn't read or understand the flow of how drafts tend to go. DJ Johnson was the prime example. We needed an edge rusher and he jumped in at the end of the run instead of starting it.  Morgan's first year looked exactly like Fitts to me. Lots of projects.  2nd year looks better.  We'll see how 3rd year goes. FA also plays into all of this as well but that's a whole different topic of how it played out and planning with regard to drafting.
    • I judge how good our players are by the way a defense covers them. XL draws no special coverage. Coker on the other hand always has a man over the top. It still doesn’t matter. You be the judge.
