5 Things After Half a Season

TOO BAD WE HAD TO BE THE ONES TO PROVE ANALYTICS / THE S2 TEST WAS A SHAM

Analytics my help in hedge fund management but not the best way to evaluate talent.  Maybe someone could have watched Stroud vs Georgia and noticed the clear intangibles. I think Bryce will be better than it appears now, but it appears that Stroud will break the mold of poor USU QB play.

COACHING AND SCHEME MATTER – CAN’T OVERCOME POOR TALENT

I think we have some impressive people on our staff. It would be difficult for anyone to make a case that we have assembled good talent on the field.  We draft poorly and make terrible trades. Could Shanahan/McDaniel level play calling win with this talent? Maybe a bit more but not past the mediocrity level we are pledged to overcome.

 DEFENSE DESRVES MORE CREDIT

We are tied for last in points allowed but we just saw a game where the other team’s defense scored more than their offense.  We are 8th in total yards allowed / 5th in passing yards.  Not trying to say we are elite, but with the key injuries on defense, they have held up admirably. Many of the stats they have given up are after our offense fails to take any time off the clock or add any momentum to the effort.

TEPPER OWNS THE TEAM AND THE RESULTS

In many lines of management they say that after 3 years the problems you have are your responsibility – you’ve had time to address and correct them. I’m not sure we will ever know what level of interference there may be but the owner has hired / allowed the hire of all the people that have given us the results we have.

PREPARE FOR MORE “AWAY” GAMES AT BOA

I’ll be a Panther fan for life.  But for those who get upset at fans who sell their tickets, I wonder how many of them keep going to a bad restaurant just because of loyalty. Do they keep seeing a doctor who doesn’t help their health outlook? Do they call back the same contractor who messed up the last job?  If the organization was showing signs of caring about the product and process, it would be a different case.  Keeping a GM who is demonstrably among the worst in his field doesn’t express an awareness of how bad the situation is.

Nothing impressive about Frank, Caldwell, and Capers in the year 2023.

Reminder, Frank was fired almost a year ago today I believe.   And that's because Frank needs talent to do what he does.  He can't work it the other way.

The talent level is low and the coaching level is also low. The staff was way overhyped. They took the low level of talent and built scheme where it made everything worse. I just can't get behind either being good at this point. This team could win games with Dalton and the oline using last year's easy scheme. 'But the online play' is avoiding this truth.

Otherwise, true. It was an away game after their only win bad on Sunday.

I could make a very good argument that Dalton could win games with our scheme this year.  The more I watch the tape, the more concerned I am about BY.

I think Dalton will attempt things that Bryce won't.  Overall, Andy Dalton isn't a very good QB at this stage though.  That has been answered for years.   And Dalton saw insane pressure in Seattle.  Seattle was so close, so often....it's hard to imagine he would be so lucky if the Panthers allowed that again with him behind center.

Unless they fire Fitt or do something that would indicate real change would be coming.  I say Bryce has to take the lumps.   Because reality is, if Frank and Bryce suck for 2 years.  We are getting a new HC and QB.

The scheme from last year and this line would be even better but I couldn't argue with your take either.

IMO, the best thing for the team and Bryce as our QB moving forward is to pull a Jags last year or Dolphins 2 years ago, fire the coach and bring in a new staff. Pending an all time run to end the season, Reich and company should not be back next season.

I just hope we don’t pull a Browns and bring back Reich even after we goes 1-16 or 2-15 thinking it will be different.
Only real solace in that is we will be drafting top 5 again next year.

Not sure the defense deserves a lot more credit. They have been legitimately bad in a lot of games not just because of turnovers by the offense. I think the total yards is skewed a bit by the fact that we are almost always behind and very often out of the game. Teams aren’t piling up passing yards and garbage time stats because there’s no need. It’s not our amazing secondary locking people down. When teams are running out the clock against us they aren’t piling up yards.

The defense has had its moments and certainly hasn’t been the biggest issue but teams have not had a hard time scoring against us when they needed to score.

    • I used to think Juan was a Zod alt. Agree he's a great poster.
    • Hawks said nah we good and sent him to the shadow realm aka the Wizards. Cold blooded. I mean they're 2-2 in a series with a young up and coming Knicks team largely through 34 year old CJ McCollum. Even if they ultimately lose the series at least they are there and have something to build on. I think Hornets fans are just beaten down and lack the objectivity to assess the situation. They think we are going to get so much worse if and when we finally change gears. Worse how? We've already been a lottery team for years now. We've already been looking to win our first playoff series in about a quarter century. We already can't get past the play in and in failing to do so we have completely embarrassed ourselves twice looking like we don't even belong. Honestly there is absolutely no excuse for a team like the Magic to be more competitive and successful than us in the playoffs. Absolutely disgusting. But that's just me. I was fuging lit when we got the Hornets back in Charlotte but that is old old news. It's time for these boys to get into a playoff series. Enough is enough. If they can't do it for 2026-27 then they need to make wholesale changes regardless.
    • Not one single pick that is asking me why we drafted a guy in the first place. It was a guy we needed and/or a guy that had certain traits making them stand out. Best of all, I feel everyone we drafted are capable of stepping onto the field this year and have a meaningful role (even Kuwatch on special teams). Obviously, nothing is guaranteed but I'm not seeing any huge flags on guys because they're risky projects or massive overreaches.
